Long-distance Movement over a Period of Days by a Female Myotis lucifugus in Newfoundland, Canada

    Get PDF
Myotis lucifugus (Little Brown Myotis) is a regionally migrating bat, widely distributed throughout North America. Through long-term monitoring systems deployed in 2 locations in Newfoundland, Canada, we recorded the movement of an adult female of at least 375 km over a period of 4 nights. Although not the longest travel distance recorded for this species, this observation emphasizes the capabilities of Little Brown Myotis for long-distance flights, the potential connectivity among distant maternity groups, and the value of long-term monitoring programs. To fully understand the movement patterns of Little Brown Myotis, advancements in technology and greater research effort are needed.Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada || Newfoundland and Labrador Wildlife Division || Saint Mary’s University || University of Waterlo

4-Oxocyclohexaneacetic acid: catemeric hydrogen bonding and spontaneous resolution of a single conformational enantiomer in an achiral ∊-keto acid

    Get PDF
The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C8H12O3, consists of a single conformational enantiomer, which aggregates in the catemeric acid-to-ketone hydrogen-bonding mode [O⋯O = 2.682 (4) Å and O—H⋯O = 172 (6)°]. Four hydrogen-bonding chains of translationally related molecules pass through the cell orthogonal to the 43 screw axis along c, alternating in the 110 and the 10 direction, with alignment with respect to this axis of + + − −. Successive chains are rotated by 90° around the c axis. One C—H⋯O=C close contact, involving the carboxyl group, exists

Are the Cochrane group registers comprehensive? A case study of Japanese psychiatry trials

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Language bias is a form of publication bias and constitutes a serious threat to meta-analyses. The Cochrane Controlled Trials Register is one attempt to remedy this and now contains more than 300,000 citations. However we are still unsure if it provides comprehensive coverage, particularly for non-English trials. METHODS: We have recently established a comprehensive register of Japanese trials of psychotropic drugs through extensive personal contacts, electronic searches and handsearches. We examined two Cochrane psychiatry group registers against this Japanese database. RESULTS: The Japanese register contained 56 reports of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of antidepressants for depression but the Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis group register contained 18, with an overlap of only nine. The Japanese register contained 61 reports of RCTs of neuroleptics for schizophrenia and the Cochrane Schizophrenia group register contained 36, with an overlap of only six. Taking account of some duplicate publications, only a quarter to a third of all relevant Japanese RCTs were retrievable from the Cochrane group registers. CONCLUSIONS: Similar, or worse, yields may be expected with RCTs conducted in other East Asian countries, and in other fields of medicine. What evidence there is suggests that this situation may lead to a systematic over estimate of treatment effect

Long-term results and complications using augmentation cystoplasty in reconstructive urology

One hundred and twenty-two augmentation cystoplasties performed over an 8-year period were reviewed. Mean age at surgery was 37 years (range 2–82 years). There were 82 female patients. The primary urodynamic diagnosis was reduced compliance in 92 (77%) pattenls and detrusor hyperreflexia/instability in the remainder. The clinical diagnostic groups were: spinal cord injury/disease in 32 (27%), myelodysplasia in 27 (22%), interstitial cystitis in 21 (17%), idiopathic detrusor instability in 13 (11%), radiation cystitis in 8 (7%). Hinman-Allen syndrome in 5 (4%), and miscellaneous in 11 (9%). A detubularized, ileal augmentation was used in 82 (67%) patients. In 36 (30%) a detubularized ileocecocystoplasty was fashioned and in the remainder detubularized sigmoid was used. In 19 patients augmentation accompanied undiversion. Sixteen patients had a simultaneous fascial sling for urethral incompetence. Mean follow-up was 37 months (range 6–96 months). There was no postoperative mortality. During follow-up 4 patients died from unrelated causes, 11 have been lost to follow-up, and 5 patients await planned transplantation. Bladder capacity was increased from a preoperative mean of 108 ml (range 15–500 ml) to 438 ml (200–1,200 ml) postoperatively. Of the 106 assessable patients, 80 (75%) had an excellent result, 21 (20%) were improved, and 5 (5%) had major ongoing problems. During the period of follow-up, 17 (16%) patients underwent revision of their augmentation. Twenty-four (21%) patients developed bladder stones and 30% of these did so more than once. Urinary incontinence became manifest in 15 (13%) patients but required surgical treatment in only half of these. Pyelonephritis occurred in 13 (11%) patients. Five patients developed small bowel obstruction following discharge from hospital. There were 7 instances of reservoir rupture in 5 (4%) patients. Augmentation cystoplasty has a pivotal role in the treatment of a broad range of lower and upper urinary tract problems. Careful patient selection and close follow-up are essential. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/38474/1/1930140402_ftp.pd

The definitive version was published in BioScience 62 (2012): 342-253, doi:10.1525/bio.2012.62.4.6.The US Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network enters its fourth decade with a distinguished record of achievement in ecological science. The value of long-term observations and experiments has never been more important for testing ecological theory and for addressing today's most difficult environmental challenges. The network's potential for tackling emergent continent-scale questions such as cryosphere loss and landscape change is becoming increasingly apparent on the basis of a capacity to combine long-term observations and experimental results with new observatory-based measurements, to study socioecological systems, to advance the use of environmental cyberinfrastructure, to promote environmental science literacy, and to engage with decisionmakers in framing major directions for research. The long-term context of network science, from understanding the past to forecasting the future, provides a valuable perspective for helping to solve many of the crucial environmental problems facing society today.2012-10-0
