Modification of physical properties of freeze-dried rice
Freeze cycling process consists of alternately freezing and thawing precooked rice for two cycles, rice is then frozen and freeze-dehydrated in vacuum sufficient to remove water from rice by sublimitation. Process modifies rice grain structure and porosity, enabling complete rehydration in one minute in hot water
Dynamics in a Bistable-Element-Network with Delayed Coupling and Local Noise
The dynamics of an ensemble of bistable elements under the influence of noise
and with global time-delayed coupling is studied numerically by using a
Langevin description and analytically by using 1) a Gaussian approximation and
2) a dichotomous model. We find that for a strong enough positive feedback the
system undergoes a phase transition and adopts a non-zero stationary mean
field. A variety of coexisting oscillatory mean field states are found for
positive and negative couplings. The magnitude of the oscillatory states is
maximal for a certain noise temperature, i.e., the system demonstrates the
phenomenon of coherence resonance. While away form the transition points the
system dynamics is well described by the Gaussian approximation, near the
bifurcations it is more adequately described by the dichotomous model.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures. To be published in the proceedings of "The 3rd

Minimal Neutrino Beta Beam for Large theta_13
We discuss the minimum requirements for a neutrino beta beam if theta_13 is
discovered by an upcoming reactor experiment, such as Double Chooz or Daya Bay.
We require that both neutrino mass hierarchy and leptonic CP violation can be
measured to competitive precisions with a single-baseline experiment in the
entire remaining theta_13 range. We find that for very high isotope production
rates, such as they might be possible using a production ring, a (B,Li) beta
beam with a gamma as low as 60 could already be sufficient to perform all of
these measurements. If only the often used nominal source luminosities can be
achieved, for example, a (Ne,He) beta beam from Fermilab to a possibly existing
water Cherenkov detector at Homestake with gamma \sim 190-350 (depending on the
Double Chooz best-fit) could outperform practically any other beam technology
including wide-band beam and neutrino factory.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl
Seeing bulk topological properties of band insulators in small photonic lattices
We present a general scheme for measuring the bulk properties of
non-interacting tight-binding models realized in arrays of coupled photonic
cavities. Specifically, we propose to implement a single unit cell of the
targeted model with tunable twisted boundary conditions in order to simulate
large systems and, most importantly, to access bulk topological properties
experimentally. We illustrate our method by demonstrating how to measure
topological invariants in a two-dimensional quantum Hall-like model.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; with Supplemental Material (2 pages
