    Effect of a Traditional Chinese Medicine combined therapy on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a randomized controlled trial

    AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate the effectiveness of a combined Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy versus conventional treatment on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.MethodsOne hundred twenty outpatients with mild and moderate adolescent idiopathic scoliosis were randomly divided into a TCM group (TCMG) and a brace group (CG). TCMG patients underwent Daoyin, Tuina, and acupotomology therapies. CG patients were treated with a Milwaukee brace. Each patient's Cobb angle was measured after 12 and 24 months of treatment, and pulmonary function was determined after 12 months of treatment. Average electromyogram (AEMG) ratio of the surface electromyogram was measured after 6 and 12 months of treatment and followed-up after 18 and 24 months.ResultsThe Cobb angle significantly decreased in both groups after 12 months of treatment compared with before treatment (P < 0.05). The percentages of original Cobb angle in TCMG and CG were 51.4% and 47.8% (P > 0.05) after 12 months and 62.5% and 34.7% (P < 0.05) after 24 months, respectively. Pulmonary function significantly improved after 12 months in TCMG (P < 0.05) but significantly decreased in CG (P < 0.05). The AEMG ratio was significantly lower (P < 0.01) and tended to remain at 1 after stopping treatment in TCMG, but increased in CG (P < 0.05).ConclusionTCM combined therapy can prevent the progression of scoliosis. The AEMG ratio is a promising index that could replace radiography in the evaluation of treatment effect and progression in scoliosis

    The Effects of Plant Growth Regulators on Cell Growth, Protein, Carotenoid, PUFAs and Lipid Production of Chlorella pyrenoidosa ZF Strain

    In the present study, eight kinds plant growth regulators—salicylic acid (SA), 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), gibberellic acid (GA3), 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA), 2, 4-epi-brassinolide (EBR), abscisic acid (ABA), ethephon (ETH), and spermidine (SPD)—were used to investigate the impact on microalgal biomass, lipid, total soluble protein, carotenoids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAS) production of Chlorella pyrenoidosa ZF strain. The results showed the quickest biomass enhancement was induced by 50 mg·L−1 NAA, with a 6.3-fold increase over the control; the highest protein content was increased by 0.005 mg·L−1 ETH, which produced 3.5-fold over the control; total carotenoids content was induced most effectively by 1 mg·L−1 NAA with 3.6-fold higher production than the control; the most efficient elicitor for lipid production was 5 mg·L−1 GA3 at 1.9-fold of the control; 0.2 mg·L−1 ETH induced the abundant production of 1.82 ± 0.23% linoleic acid; 0.65 ± 0.01% linolenic acid was induced by 1 mg·L−1 NAA; 2.53 ± 0.15% arachidonic acid and 0.44 ± 0.05% docosahexaenoic acid were induced by 5 mg·L−1 GA3. Transcriptional expression levels of seven lipid-related genes, including ACP, BC, FAD, FATA, KAS, MCTK, and SAD, were studied by real-time RT-q-PCR. 5 mg·L−1 GA3 was the most effective regulator for transcriptional expressions of these seven genes, producing 23-fold ACP, 31-fold BC, 25-fold FAD, 6-fold KAS, 12-fold MCTK compared with the controls, respectively

    Laser Radiation Induces Growth and Lipid Accumulation in the Seawater Microalga Chlorella pacifica

    The impacts of laser radiation (Nd: YAG laser, 1064 nm at 800 mW, He–Ne laser 808 nm at 6 W, semiconductor laser 632.8 nm at 40 mW) on growth and lipid accumulation of Chlorella pacifica were investigated in this study. The results showed growth rates increased 1.23, 1.41, and 1.40-fold over controls by 4 min Nd: YAG, 4 min He–Ne, and 8 min semiconductor laser treatments, respectively, whereas the corresponding nitrate reductase observed increased 1.25, 1.63, and 2.08-fold over controls. Moreover, total chlorophyll concentration was increased to 1.09, 1.29, and 1.33-fold over controls, respectively. After 20 days cultivation, the highest lipid content was 35.99%, 18.46%, and 31.00% after 2 min Nd: YAG, 4 min He–Ne, and 4 min semiconductor laser treatments, corresponding to 2.86, 1.50, and 2.46-fold increase over controls, respectively. Furthermore, the lipid productivity of the above 3 treatments were 15.25 ± 2.56, 16.25 ± 2.45, and 14.75 ± 2.11 mg L−1 d−1. However, the highest lipid productivity was 22.00 ± 3.28, 16.25 ± 2.45, and 19.25 ± 1.78 mg L−1 d−1, in response to treatment for 2 min Nd: YAG, 1 min He–Ne, and 4 min semiconductor laser treatments, with 2.67, 1.97, and 2.33-fold increase over controls, respectively. These results indicated that lipid accumulation efficiency of C. pacifica could be significantly improved by laser irradiation using Nd: YAG, He–Ne, and semiconductor laser treatments

    Subnormal Peripheral Blood Leukocyte Counts Are Related to the Lowest Prevalence and Incidence of Metabolic Syndrome: Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study

    Few studies have assessed the relationship between a subnormal inflammatory status and metabolic syndrome (MS). We therefore designed a cross-sectional and 5-year cohort study to evaluate how a subnormal peripheral blood leukocyte count is related to MS. Participants were recruited from Tianjin Medical University General Hospital-Health Management Centre. Both a baseline cross-sectional (n=46,179) and a prospective assessment (n=13,061) were performed. Participants without a history of MS were followed up for 5 years. Leukocyte counts and MS components were assessed at baseline and yearly during the follow-up. Adjusted logistic and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess relationships between the categories of leukocyte counts and MS. The subnormal leukocyte counts group (1,100&#x2013;3,900&#x2009;cells/mm3) had the lowest prevalence and incidence of MS. The odds ratio and hazard ratio (95&#x25; confidence interval) of the highest leukocyte counts were 1.98 (1.57&#x2013;2.49) and 1.50 (1.22&#x2013;1.84) (both P for trend &#x3C;0.0001), respectively, when compared to the subnormal leukocyte counts group after adjusting for potential confounders. This study has shown that subnormal leukocyte counts are independently related to the lowest prevalence and incidence of MS. The findings suggest that it is necessary to restudy and discuss the clinical or preventive value of subnormal leukocyte counts
