Transmission resonance in a composite plasmonic structure
The design, fabrication, and optical properties of a composite plasmonic
structure, a two-dimentional array of split-ring resonators inserted into
periodic square holes of a metal film, have been reported. A new type of
transmission resonance, which makes a significant difference from the
conventional peaks, has been suggested both theoretically and experimentally.
To understand this effect, a mechanism of ring- resonance induced dipole

Hilbert expansion of the Boltzmann equation in the incompressible Euler level in a channel
The study of hydrodynamic limit of the Boltzmann equation with physical
boundary is a challenging problem due to appearance of the viscous and Knudsen
boundary layers. In this paper, the hydrodynamic limit from the Boltzmann
equation with specular reflection boundary condition to the incompressible
Euler in a channel is investigated. Based on the multiscaled Hilbert expansion,
the equations with boundary conditions and compatibility conditions for
interior solutions, viscous and Knudsen boundary layers are derived under
different scaling, respectively. Then some uniform estimates for the interior
solutions, viscous and Knudsen boundary layers are established. With the help
of framework and the uniform estimates obtained above, the
solutions to the Boltzmann equation are constructed by the truncated Hilbert
expansion with multiscales, and hence the hydrodynamic limit in the

Geography and similarity of regional cuisines in China
Food occupies a central position in every culture and it is therefore of
great interest to understand the evolution of food culture. The advent of the
World Wide Web and online recipe repositories has begun to provide
unprecedented opportunities for data-driven, quantitative study of food
culture. Here we harness an online database documenting recipes from various
Chinese regional cuisines and investigate the similarity of regional cuisines
in terms of geography and climate. We found that the geographical proximity,
rather than climate proximity is a crucial factor that determines the
similarity of regional cuisines. We develop a model of regional cuisine
evolution that provides helpful clues to understand the evolution of cuisines

Inhibition of Autophagy Signaling via 3-methyladenine Rescued Nicotine-Mediated Cardiac Pathological Effects and Heart Dysfunctions.
Rationale: Cigarette smoking is a well-established risk factor for myocardial infarction and sudden cardiac death. The deleterious effects are mainly due to nicotine, but the mechanisms involved and theranostics remain unclear. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that nicotine exposure increases the heart sensitivity to ischemia/reperfusion injury and dysfunction, which can be rescued by autophagy inhibitor. Methods: Nicotine or saline was administered to adult rats via subcutaneous osmotic minipumps in the absence or presence of an autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine (3-MA). After 30 days of nicotine treatment, the rats underwent the cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) procedure and echocardiography analysis, and the heart tissues were isolated for molecular biological studies. Results: Nicotine exposure increased I/R-induced cardiac injury and cardiac dysfunction as compared to the control. The levels of autophagy-related proteins including LC3 II, P62, Beclin1, and Atg5 were upregulated in the reperfused hearts isolated from nicotine-treated group. In addition, nicotine enhanced cardiac and plasma ROS production, and increased the phosphorylation of GSK3β (ser9) in the left ventricle tissues. Treatment with 3-MA abolished nicotine-mediated increase in the levels of autophagy-related proteins and phosphorylation of GSK3β, but had no effect on ROS production. Of importance, 3-MA ameliorated the augmented I/R-induced cardiac injury and dysfunction in the nicotine-treated group as compared to the control. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that nicotine exposure enhances autophagy signaling pathway, resulting in development of ischemic-sensitive phenotype of heart. It suggests a potentially novel therapeutic strategy of autophagy inhibition for the treatment of ischemic heart disease
