The Bus’ Tour The Life’s Tour: Interpretation of The Bus from Narrative Perspective

One chief concern of critics on Singer is whether he is a modernist. The wealth of subject matter and narrative invention in his fictions are often mentioned. These two factors are decisive to understand Singer’s works’ modernism. Here I chose a short story The Bus for example to analyze how the focalization helps to enrich the themes in it.

Renormalization-group exponents for superconducting phases in two-leg ladders

In previous studies, we proposed a scaling ansatz for electron-electron interactions under renormalization group transformation. With the inclusion of phonon-mediated interactions, we show that the scaling ansatz, characterized by the divergent logarithmic length ldl_d and a set of renormalization-group exponents, also works rather well. The superconducting phases in a doped two-leg ladder are studied and classified by these renormalization-group exponents as demonstration. Finally, non-trivial constraints among the exponents are derived and explained.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; minor revisions with references adde

Spatial trends of noncollinear exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with different Fermi surfaces

We study the exchange coupling mediated by itinerant carriers with spin-orbit interaction by both analytic and numeric approaches. The mediated exchange coupling is noncollinear and its spatial trends depend on the Fermi-surface topology of the itinerant carriers. Taking Rashba interaction as an example, the exchange coupling is similar to the conventional Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida type in weak coupling. On the other hand, in the strong coupling, the spiral interaction dominates. In addition, inclusion of finite spin relaxation always makes the noncollinear spiral exchange interaction dominant. Potential applications of our findings are explained and discussed

Modelling the Asymmetric Volatility in Hog Prices in Taiwan: The Impact of Joining the WTO

    Get PDF
The hog industry, where prices are determined according to an auction system, is of vital importance to the agricultural industry in Taiwan by providing significant production and employment. In particular, there were significant impacts on daily hog prices in the periods before, during and after joining the WTO, which we will refer to as periods of anticipation, adjustment and settlement. The purpose of the paper is to model the growth rates and volatility in daily hog prices in Taiwan from 23 March 1999 to 30 June 2007, which enables an analysis of the effects of joining the WTO. The paper provides a novel application of financial volatility models to agricultural finance. The empirical results have significant implications for risk management and policy considerations in the agricultural industry in Taiwan, especially when significant structural changes, such as joining the WTO, are concerned. The three sub-samples relating to the period before, during and after joining the WTO display significantly different volatility persistence, namely symmetry, asymmetry but not leverage, and leverage, respectively, whereby negative shocks increase volatility but positive shocks of a similar magnitude decrease volatility.Hog prices, joining the WTO, conditional volatility models, asymmetry, leverage, moment conditions.
