    Difference-in-differences with Economic Factors and the Case of Housing Returns

    This paper studies how to incorporate observable factors in difference-in-differences and document their empirical relevance. We show that even under random assignment directly adding factors with unit-specific loadings into the difference-in-differences estimation results in biased estimates. This bias, which we term the “bad time control problem” arises when the treatment effect covaries with the factor variation. Researchers often control for factor structures by using: (i) unit time trends, (ii) pre-treatment covariates interacted with a time trend and (iii) group-time dummies. We show that all these methods suffer from the bad time control problem and/or omitted factor bias. We propose two solutions to the bad time control problem. To evaluate the relevance of the factor structure we study US housing returns. Adding macroeconomic factors shows that factors have additional explanatory power and estimated factor loadings differ systematically across geographic areas. This results in substantially altered treatment effects

    Mechanisms for Performance Enhancement of Bi2Te3 in Polymer Composites

    We demonstrated the use of the as-received conjugated polymer P3HT (poly (3-hexylthiophene-2,5 diyl) doped with F4TCNQ (2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) as a matrix for forming a composite with as-received, commercially available p-type Bi_2 Te_3 powder. The optimized formulation, containing no small inorganic ions, exhibits a power factor of up to 5.3 uW K^(-2) m^(-1), about nine times higher than the highest power factor we achieved from mixtures of only P3HT and F4TCNQ. The Bi_2 Te_3 was responsible for increases in both Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. P3HT, with higher hole mobility, was superior to PQT12 (poly(bisdodecylquaterthiophene), and F4TCNQ was superior to FeCl3, for matrix and dopant, respectively, for this purpose. The power factor obtained is about 40% of that reportedly obtained from synthesized Bi_2 Te_3 nanowires in FeCl3-doped P3HT. Thus, a doped conjugated polymer system made only from commercial-grade components was shown to support the extraction of thermoelectric performance by a commonly used inorganic semiconductor

    Bank lending and CEO turnover: Evidence from China

    To maintain bank relationship, borrowers have motives to discipline themselves by forcing out underperforming CEOs. In this paper, we show that the state ownership in emerging markets renders this disciplinary mechanism ineffective. Using the contract information of bank loans for Chinese listed firms, we find that higher bank loan intensity overall does not affect the probability of forcing out an underperforming CEO. The absence of disciplinary effect is driven by the bank-firm pairs in which either the borrower or the lender is state-owned. However, the disciplinary effect is significant if a firm’s bank loans mostly consist of secured and short-term bank loans. Bank loans increase the likelihood of a forced CEO turnover, especially when joint-equity banks serve as the main lender. Overall, we propose that state ownership is an important factor driving the inefficiency of credit market in emerging countries

    Exploring Asymmetric Tunable Blind-Spots for Self-supervised Denoising in Real-World Scenarios

    Self-supervised denoising has attracted widespread attention due to its ability to train without clean images. However, noise in real-world scenarios is often spatially correlated, which causes many self-supervised algorithms based on the pixel-wise independent noise assumption to perform poorly on real-world images. Recently, asymmetric pixel-shuffle downsampling (AP) has been proposed to disrupt the spatial correlation of noise. However, downsampling introduces aliasing effects, and the post-processing to eliminate these effects can destroy the spatial structure and high-frequency details of the image, in addition to being time-consuming. In this paper, we systematically analyze downsampling-based methods and propose an Asymmetric Tunable Blind-Spot Network (AT-BSN) to address these issues. We design a blind-spot network with a freely tunable blind-spot size, using a large blind-spot during training to suppress local spatially correlated noise while minimizing damage to the global structure, and a small blind-spot during inference to minimize information loss. Moreover, we propose blind-spot self-ensemble and distillation of non-blind-spot network to further improve performance and reduce computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results while comprehensively outperforming other self-supervised methods in terms of image texture maintaining, parameter count, computation cost, and inference time

    Can ChatGPT reduce human financial analysts’ optimistic biases?

    This paper examines the potential of ChatGPT, a large language model, as a financial advisor for listed firm performance forecasts. We focus on the constituent stocks of the China Securities Index 300 and compare ChatGPT’s forecasts for major financial performance measures with human analysts’ forecasts and the realised values. Our findings suggest that ChatGPT can correct the optimistic biases of human analysts. This study contributes to the literature by exploring the potential of ChatGPT as a financial advisor and demonstrating its role in reducing human biases in financial decision-making

    Improving Carbon Mitigation Potential through Grassland Ecosystem Restoration under Climatic Change in Northeastern Tibetan Plateau

    To protect the water tower’s ecosystem environment and conserve biodiversity, China has been implementing a huge payment program for ecosystem services in the three rivers source region. We explored here the dynamics of grassland degradation and restoration from 1990 to 2012 and its relationships with climate mitigation in the TRSR to provide a definite answer as to the forcing and response of grassland degradation and restoration to climate change. Then we estimated its potential of climate mitigation benefits to address the question of whether ecological restoration could be effective in reversing the decline of ecosystem carbon mitigation service. The trend of average annual temperature and precipitation observed by meteorological stations were approximately increased. Compared before and after 2004, the area of grassland degradation was increased slightly. However, nearly one-third of degraded grassland showed improvement, and the grassland vegetation coverage showed significant increase. Comparing current grassland vegetation coverage with healthy vegetation cover with the same grass type, nearly half of the area still needs to further restore vegetation cover. The grassland degradation resulted in significant carbon emissions, but the restoration to its healthy status has been estimated to be technical mitigation potential

    Food benefit and climate warming potential of nitrogen fertilizer uses in China

Growing concerns have been raised on the impacts of N fertilizer uses on food security and climate change, which is lack of quantification. Here we use a carbon–nitrogen (C–N) coupled ecosystem model, to quantify the food benefit and climate consequence of agronomic N addition in China over the six decades from 1949 to 2008. Results show that N fertilizer-induced crop yield and soil C sequestration had reached their peaks, while nitrous oxide (N2O) emission continued rising as N was added. Since the early 2000s, stimulation of excessive N fertilizer uses to global climate warming through N2O emission was estimated to outweigh their climate benefit in increasing CO2 uptake. The net warming effect of N fertilizer uses, mainly centered in the North China Plain and the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River Basin, with N2O emission completely counteracting or even exceeding, by more than a factor of 2, the CO2 sink. If we reduced the current N fertilizer level by 60% in 'over-fertilized' areas, N2O emission would substantially decrease without significantly influencing crop yield and soil C sequestration.This study has been supported by NASA IDS Program (NNG04GM39C), NASA LCLUC Program (NNX08AL73G), and the National Basic Research Program of China (2010CB950900) and (2010CB950604)

    Comparison of Gross Primary Productivity Derived from GIMMS NDVI3g, GIMMS, and MODIS in Southeast Asia

    Gross primary production (GPP) plays an important role in the net ecosystem exchange of CO2 between the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems. It is particularly important to monitor GPP in Southeast Asia because of increasing rates of tropical forest degradation and deforestation in the region in recent decades. The newly available, improved, third generation Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI3g) from the Global Inventory Modelling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) group provides a long temporal dataset, from July 1981 to December 2011, for terrestrial carbon cycle and climate response research. However, GIMMS NDVI3g-based GPP estimates are not yet available. We applied the GLOPEM-CEVSA model, which integrates an ecosystem process model and a production efficiency model, to estimate GPP in Southeast Asia based on three independent results of the fraction of photosynthetically active radiation absorbed by vegetation (FPAR) from GIMMS NDVI3g (GPPNDVI3g), GIMMS NDVI1g (GPPNDVI1g), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) MOD15A2 FPAR product (GPPMOD15). The GPP results were validated using ground data from eddy flux towers located in different forest biomes, and comparisons were made among the three GPPs as well as the MOD17A2 GPP products (GPPMOD17). Based on validation with flux tower derived GPP estimates the results show that GPPNDVI3g is more accurate than GPPNDVI1g and is comparable in accuracy with GPPMOD15. In addition, GPPNDVI3g and GPPMOD15 have good spatial-temporal consistency. Our results indicate that GIMMS NDVI3g is an effective dataset for regional GPP simulation in Southeast Asia, capable of accurately tracking the variation and trends in long-term terrestrial ecosystem GPP dynamics

    Alterations in Cerebellar Functional Connectivity Are Correlated With Decreased Psychomotor Vigilance Following Total Sleep Deprivation

    Previous studies have reported significant changes in functional connectivity among various brain networks following sleep restriction. The cerebellum plays an important role in information processing for motor control and provides this information to higher-order networks. However, little is known regarding how sleep deprivation influences functional connectivity between the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex in humans. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in cerebellar functional connectivity induced by sleep deprivation, and their relationship with psychomotor vigilance. A total of 52 healthy men underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging before and after 36 h of total sleep deprivation. Functional connectivity was evaluated using region of interest (ROI)-to-ROI analyses, using 26 cerebellar ROIs as seed regions. Psychomotor vigilance was assessed using the psychomotor vigilance test (PVT). Decreased functional connectivity was observed between cerebellar seed regions and the bilateral postcentral, left inferior frontal, left superior medial frontal, and right middle temporal gyri. In contrast, increased functional connectivity was observed between the cerebellum and the bilateral caudate. Furthermore, decrease in functional connectivity between the cerebellum and the postcentral gyrus was negatively correlated with increase in PVT reaction times, while increase in functional connectivity between the cerebellum and the bilateral caudate was positively correlated with increase in PVT reaction times. These results imply that altered cerebellar functional connectivity is associated with impairment in psychomotor vigilance induced by sleep deprivation
