    Macerals of lignite and the effect of alkali treatment on the structure and combustion performance of lignite

    Suppressing the spontaneous combustion of lignite is of great significance for safe transportation and efficient utilization of lignite. Taking the Shengli lignite as the research object, two different macerals, inertinite and huminite, were selected by optical microscope, and treated with NaOH respectively to study the relationship between the structure and combustion reaction performance of different macerals and lignite treated with NaOH. The structure of the prepared coal samples was characterized by SEM-EDS, XPS, FT-IR, XRD and Raman, and the changes of the main functional groups were analyzed. The effect of NaOH treatment on the combustion performance of different maceral lignite was investigated by TGA. The results showed that the ignition temperature of huminite lignite was about 10 ℃ earlier than that of inertinite, but the comprehensive combustion characteristic index of inertinite lignite was slightly higher than that of huminite. After the NaOH treatment, the lignite of different macerals showed a hysteresis of combustion, there were two obvious weight losses in the range of 200−500 ℃ and 650−800 ℃, respectively, and the mass loss was mainly concentrated in the second weight loss, in particular, the effect of huminite lignite was more significant, and the temperature corresponding to the maximum combustion reaction rate was about 60 ℃ behind that of inertinite. The kinetic analysis of the combustion process of the coal samples showed that the activation energy of combustion reaction of lignite with different macerals significantly increased after the NaOH treatment, and the huminite lignite was higher than that of inertinite lignite. The XPS/FT-IR results revealed that the contents of carboxylic oxygen-containing functional groups in different macerals of lignite treated by NaOH decreased, the main reason is that in the process of NaOH treatment, Na+ interacted with the carboxylic oxygen-containing functional groups in lignite to form the sodium carboxylate structure, and the relative amount of the sodium carboxylate structure in huminite coal was relatively large. It is believed that the inhibitory effect on the combustion of lignite with different macerals is attributed to the stability of the sodium carboxylate structure, and the number of the sodium carboxylate structure formed by combining with Na is the main reason for the difference in its combustion performance. The XRD/Raman analysis indicates that the formation of the sodium carboxylate structure in lignite leads to the increase of the order degree of carbon microcrystalline structure, and the order degree of huminite lignite is higher than that in inertinite

    A novel and highly efficient Zr-containing catalyst supported by biomass-derived sodium carboxymethyl cellulose for hydrogenation of furfural

    Functional use of biomass based on its structural properties is an efficient approach for the valuable utilization of biomass resources. In this work, carboxymethyl cellulose zirconium-based catalyst (Zr-CMC) was constructed by the coordination between the carboxylic groups in sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) with transition metal Zr4+. The prepared catalyst was applied into the synthesis of furfuryl alcohol (FAL) by catalytic transfer hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural (FF) using isopropanol as hydrogen donor. Both the preparation conditions and the reaction conditions of Zr-CMC catalyst were investigated and optimized. The results showed that Zr-CMC was efficient for the reaction with the FF conversion, FAL yield and selectivity reaching to 92.5%, 91.5 %, and 99.0%, respectively, under the mild conditions (90°C). Meanwhile, the Zr-CMC catalyst could be reused at least for five times without obvious decrease in efficiency, indicating the catalyst had excellent stability. With the advantages of sustainable raw materials, high efficiency, and excellent stability, the prepared catalyst is potential for application in the field of biomass conversion

    Modification effect of changes in cardiometabolic traits in association between kidney stones and cardiovascular events

    BackgroundsWhether longitudinal changes in metabolic status influence the effect of kidney stones on cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains unclarified. We investigated the modification effect of status changes in metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the association of kidney stones with risk of incident CVD events.MethodsWe performed a prospective association and interaction study in a nationwide cohort including 129,172 participants aged ≥ 40 years without CVDs at baseline and followed up for an average of 3.8 years. Kidney stones information was collected by using a questionnaire and validated by medical records. The repeated biochemical measurements were performed to ascertain the metabolic status at both baseline and follow-up.Results4,017 incident total CVDs, 1,413 coronary heart diseases (CHDs) and 2,682 strokes were documented and ascertained during follow-up. Kidney stones presence was significantly associated with 44%, 70% and 31% higher risk of CVDs, CHDs and stroke, respectively. The stratified analysis showed significant associations were found in the incident and sustained MetS patients, while no significant associations were found in the non-MetS at both baseline and follow-up subjects or the MetS remission ones, especially in women. For the change status of each single component of the MetS, though the trends were not always the same, the associations with CVD were consistently significant in those with sustained metabolic disorders, except for the sustained high blood glucose group, while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups; while the associations were consistently significant in those with incident metabolic disorders except for the incident blood pressure group. We also found a significant association of kidney stone and CVD or CHD risk in the remain normal glucose or triglycerides groups.ConclusionsA history of kidney stones in women with newly developed MetS or long-standing MetS associated with increased risk of CVD. The mechanisms link kidney stones and CVD risk in the metabolic and non-metabolic pathways were warranted for further studies

    The Relative Body Weight Gain From Early to Middle Life Adulthood Associated With Later Life Risk of Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study

    AimTo determine the effect of decade-based body weight gain from 20 to 50 years of age on later life diabetes risk.Methods35,611 non-diabetic participants aged ≥ 50 years from a well-defined nationwide cohort were followed up for average of 3.6 years, with cardiovascular diseases and cancers at baseline were excluded. Body weight at 20, 30, 40, and 50 years was reported. The overall 30 years and each 10-year weight gain were calculated from the early and middle life. Cox regression models were used to estimate risks of incident diabetes.ResultsAfter 127,745.26 person-years of follow-up, 2,789 incident diabetes were identified (incidence rate, 2.18%) in 25,289 women (mean weight gain 20-50 years, 7.60 kg) and 10,322 men (7.93 kg). Each 10-kg weight gain over the 30 years was significantly associated with a 39.7% increased risk of incident diabetes (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.33-1.47); weight gain from 20-30 years showed a more prominent effect on the risk of developing diabetes before 60 years than that of after 60 years (Hazard ratio, HR = 1.084, 95% CI [1.049-1.121], P <0.0001 vs. 1.015 [0.975-1.056], P = 0.4643; PInteraction=0.0293). It showed a stable effect of the three 10-year intervals weight gain on risk of diabetes after 60 years (HR=1.055, 1.038, 1.043, respectively, all P < 0.0036).ConclusionsThe early life weight gain showed a more prominent effect on developing diabetes before 60 years than after 60 years; however, each-decade weight gain from 20 to 50 years showed a similar effect on risk developing diabetes after 60 years

    Internationalizing Chinese higher education institutions

    In this qualitative case study, I explored how internationalization is interpreted at a higher education institution in Shanghai, China. By using a theoretical framework containing Knight’s (2004) model, Marginson and Rhoades’ (2002) concept of ‘Glo-na-cal’, and Tierney’s (1998) academic culture, I attempted to answer three main research questions: How is internationalization interpreted at the national level, in terms of strategies, approaches, and rationales? How is internationalization interpreted at the institutional level, in terms of activities and rationales? At the core of the internationalization of higher education in China lies potential academic cultural clashes. How is this clash manifested, and how is this clash addressed at the institutional level? This study took place at School of Economics, Pacific University in China. Data collection took place from late March through mid-April 2011 using a strategic sample of participants including domestically trained scholars, returnee scholars, and senior administrators in the school. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews and document collection. Interviews were conducted in Mandarin and were digitally recorded and subsequently transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically. The findings of this study suggest that internationalization of higher education has taken a narrow and pragmatic approach in China’s national policy level: internationalization is treated as a means to achieve national goals in technology innovation and creativity, and economic competitiveness through building world-class universities. However, there is a lack of well-articulated strategies of how to achieve the world-class university status. The absence of concrete strategies imposed from the national level does make room for suitable strategies and activities at the institutional level internationalization process. The case study institution has developed a set of strategies for internationalization, including overseas recruiting and strengthening academic environment, curriculum reform and strengthening teaching quality, emphasis on research and intensifying academic exchange. Nevertheless, true internationalization does not come easily. A lack of collegial academic culture is shown at the case study institution between the domestically trained faculty and returnee scholars. From a macro perspective, this study also indicates a frequent interaction among the local, national, and global levels during the process of internationalizing a Chinese higher education institution.Education, Faculty ofEducational Studies (EDST), Department ofGraduat

The goal is to understand the magnitudes and sources of mismatch in this assignment, both in theory and in the data. The article presents evidence of substantial mismatch between ability and educational attainment across 21 OECD countries, with a main focus on Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United States. Model parameters are estimated using a simulated method of moments approach. The main empirical finding is that measured mismatch arises largely from noise in test scores and does not reflect borrowing constraints.
