    Staggered Currents in the Vortex Core

    We study the electronic structure of the vortex core in the cuprates using the U(1) slave-boson mean-field wavefunctions and their Gutzwiller projection. We conclude that there exists local orbital antiferromagnetic order in the core near optimal doping. We compare the results with that of BCS theory and analyze the spatial dependence of the local tunneling density of states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Grating-frustrated coupler: a novel channel-dropping filter in single-mode optical fibre

    A low-insertion-loss, all-single-mode fiber, wavelength-division-multiplexing filter comprising a four-port polished coupler and a strong fiber grating is demonstrated. The device operated in a novel way by a process we call grating-frustrated directional coupling. A fiber grating, present in only one half of the coupler, frustrates the transference of power to the other half within a narrow wavelength range. The performance of a prototype device - a 1535-nm channel-dropping filter with 0.7-nm bandwidth, 70% peak transmission, and 13-dB isolation-shows great promise for wavelength-division-multiplexing and line-filtering applications

    Properties of a Dilute Bose Gas near a Feshbach Resonance

    In this paper, properties of a homogeneous Bose gas with a Feshbach resonance are studied in the dilute region at zero temperature. The stationary state contains condensations of atoms and molecules. The ratio of the molecule density to the atom density is πna3\pi na^3. There are two types of excitations, molecular excitations and atomic excitations. Atomic excitations are gapless, consistent with the traditional theory of a dilute Bose gas. The molecular excitation energy is finite in the long wavelength limit as observed in recent experiments on 85^{85}Rb. In addition, the decay process of the condensate is studied. The coefficient of the three-body recombination rate is about 140 times larger than that of a Bose gas without a Feshbach resonance, in reasonably good agreement with the experiment on 23^{23}Na.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure, comparison between the calculated three-body recombination rate and the experimental data for Na system has been adde

    Effects of dark sectors' mutual interaction on the growth of structures

    We present a general formalism to study the growth of dark matter perturbations when dark energy perturbations and interactions between dark sectors are present. We show that dynamical stability of the growth of structure depends on the type of coupling between dark sectors. By taking the appropriate coupling to ensure the stable growth of structure, we observe that the effect of the dark sectors' interaction overwhelms that of dark energy perturbation on the growth function of dark matter perturbation. Due to the influence of the interaction, the growth index can differ from the value without interaction by an amount within the observational sensibility, which provides a possibility to disclose the interaction between dark sectors through future observations on the growth of large structure.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, revised version, to appear in JCA

    Study of Bs-> \phi l^+ l^-$ Decay in a Single Universal Extra Dimension

    Utilizing form factors calculated within the light-cone sum rules, we have evaluated the decay branching ratios of BsϕγB_s\to \phi\gamma and Bsϕ+B_s\to \phi \ell^+\ell^- in a single universal extra dimension model (UED), which is viewed as one of the alternative theories beyond the standard model (SM). For the decay Bsϕ+B_s \to \phi \ell^+\ell^-, the dilepton invariant mass spectra, the forward-backward asymmetry, and double lepton polarization are also calculated. For each case, we compared the obtained results with predictions of the SM. In lower values of the compactification factor 1/R, the only parameter in this model, we see the considerable discrepancy between the UED and SM models. However, when 1/R increases, the results of UED tend to diminish and at 1/R=1000GeV1/R = 1000 \mathrm{GeV}, two models have approximately the same predictions. Compared with data from CDF of Bsϕμ+μB_s \to \phi \mu^+ \mu^-, the 1/R tends to be larger than 350GeV350 \mathrm{GeV}. We also note that the zero crossing point of the forward-backward asymmetry is become smaller, which will be an important plat to prob the contribution from the extra dimension model. The results obtained in this work will be very useful in searching new physics beyond SM. Moreover, the order of magnitude for branching ratios shows a possibility to study these channels at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CDF and the future super-B factory.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

    Prescription Opioid Use Among Hispanics/Latinos With Arthritis Symptoms: Results From the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos

    Introduction: To determine the prevalence of prescription opioid (PO) use among Hispanics/Latinos with arthritis symptoms and to characterize how demographic and cultural factors are associated with PO use. Method: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline visit data during 2008 to 2011 from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, a population-based cohort study of 16,415 Hispanics/Latinos living in Chicago, Illinois, Miami, Florida, Bronx, New York, and San Diego, California. Included participants self-reported painful inflammation or swelling in one or more joints. Multivariate models controlling for physical and mental health scores were constructed to assess how demographic and cultural factors were associated with PO use. Results: A total of 9.3% were using POs at the time of the baseline visit. In multivariate models, persons of Cuban background (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 0.42, 95% confidence interval [CI; 0.21, 0.81]) and of Dominican background (AOR = 0.38, 95% CI [0.18, 0.80]) were significantly less likely to use POs compared with a reference group of persons of Mexican background. Greater language acculturation was also negatively associated with PO use (AOR = 0.68, 95% CI [0.53, 0.87]). Conclusion: POs were used relatively uncommonly, and use showed marked variation between Hispanic/Latino groups. Future study should determine mechanisms for why greater use of English among Hispanics/Latinos might influence PO use
