    DualVD: An Adaptive Dual Encoding Model for Deep Visual Understanding in Visual Dialogue

    Different from Visual Question Answering task that requires to answer only one question about an image, Visual Dialogue involves multiple questions which cover a broad range of visual content that could be related to any objects, relationships or semantics. The key challenge in Visual Dialogue task is thus to learn a more comprehensive and semantic-rich image representation which may have adaptive attentions on the image for variant questions. In this research, we propose a novel model to depict an image from both visual and semantic perspectives. Specifically, the visual view helps capture the appearance-level information, including objects and their relationships, while the semantic view enables the agent to understand high-level visual semantics from the whole image to the local regions. Futhermore, on top of such multi-view image features, we propose a feature selection framework which is able to adaptively capture question-relevant information hierarchically in fine-grained level. The proposed method achieved state-of-the-art results on benchmark Visual Dialogue datasets. More importantly, we can tell which modality (visual or semantic) has more contribution in answering the current question by visualizing the gate values.     Small molecule inhibitors of osteoarthritis: Current development and future perspective

    Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the common degenerative joint diseases in clinic. It mainly damages articular cartilage, causing pain, swelling and stiffness around joints, and is the main cause of disability of the elderly. Due to the unclear pathogenesis of osteoarthritis and the poor self-healing ability of articular cartilage, the treatment options for this disease are limited. At present, NSAIDs, Glucocorticoid and Duloxetine are the most commonly used treatment choice for osteoarthritis. Although it is somewhat effective, the adverse reactions are frequent and serious. The development of safer and more effective anti-osteoarthritis drugs is essential and urgent. This review summarizes recent advances in the pharmacological treatment of OA, focusing on small molecule inhibitors targeting cartilage remodeling in osteoarthritis as well as the research idea of reducing adverse effects by optimizing the dosage form of traditional drugs for the treatment of osteoarthritis. It should provide a reference for exploration of new potential treatment options

    Early Cenozoic diorite and diabase from Doumer Island, Antarctic Peninsula: zircon U-Pb geochronology, petrogenesis and tectonic implications

    In order to understand the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of diorite and diabase units on Doumer Island, Antarctic Peninsula, this paper reports new laser ablation—inductively coupled plasma—mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb, geochemical, and Lu-Hf isotopic data for the magmatism. The diorite and diabase samples yielded zircon U-Pb ages of 55.4 ± 0.3 and 52.8 ± 0.4 Ma, respectively. These samples are enriched in the large ion lithophile elements and the light rare earth elements, and are depleted in the high field strength elements. The zircons in these samples yield Hf (t) values from 9.03 to 11.87 and model ages (TDM2) of 342–524 Ma. The major, trace, rare earth element (REE), and Hf isotopic data for the diorites indicate that these units were formed by the mixing of magmas generated by (a) the partial melting of mantle wedge material that experienced fluid-metasomatism in a subduction zone setting, and (b) the melting of juvenile crustal material induced by the upwelling of mantle-derived magmas in a subduction–collision setting. The diabase units contain higher total REE concentrations than the diorite, indicating they were derived from a different source region. These samples also have higher Mg# values and contain lower concentrations of Cr and Ni than the diorites, and have weakly negative Nb and Ta anomalies with Nb/Ta values of <3. The zircons in these samples yield Hf (t) values from 9.08 to 11.11 and model ages (TDM2) of 389– 503 Ma. The major, trace, REE, and Hf isotopic compositions of the diabase units indicate that that they were derived from the mixing of depleted mantle-derived magmas with magmas generated by the melting of juvenile crustal material which was induced by the upwelling of the mantle into the crust.     Self-concept mediates the relationships between childhood traumatic experiences and adolescent depression in both clinical and community samples

    Background: Childhood trauma is a pivotal risk factor for adolescent depression. While the association between childhood trauma and depression is well-established, the mediating role of self-concept has not been acknowledged. Specifically, limited attention has been paid to how childhood maltreatment impacts adolescent depression through physical and social self-concept, both in clinical and community samples. This study aims to investigate how distinct and cumulative childhood trauma affects adolescent depression, as well as the potential mediating role of self-concept in their relationships. Methods: We recruited 227 depressed adolescents (dataset 1, 45 males, age = 15.34 ± 1.96) and 574 community adolescents (dataset 2, 107 males, age = 16.79 ± 0.65). Each participant was assessed on five subtypes of childhood trauma severity, cumulative trauma index, physical and social self-concept, and depression. Mediation models were tested separately in the clinical and community samples. Results: Clinically depressed adolescents experienced a higher level of trauma severity, a greater number of trauma subtypes, and had lower levels of physical and social self-concept compared to community adolescents. Analyses on childhood trauma severity and cumulative trauma index jointly indicated that physical and social self-concept played mediation roles in the relationships between childhood trauma experiences and depression. Moreover, the mediating effects of self-concept were stronger in depressed adolescents when compared to community samples. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that physical and social self-concept play mediating roles in the pathway linking childhood trauma and adolescent depression, particularly in clinically depressed individuals

    Parametric study of a novel gravity assisted loop heat pipe (galhp) with composite mesh-screen wick structure

    This article carried out a parametric study of the thermal performance of a novel gravity assisted loop heat pipe (GALHP) with composite mesh-screen wick structure. A refined threeway structure with interior liquid-vapour separator was developed on top of the evaporator to enable a gravity-assisted operation, which not only simplified the corresponding wick structure but also eliminated the ‘dry-out’ potential in conventional GALHPs. A dedicated simulation model was developed on basis of the heat transfer and the flow characteristics derived from the governing equations of mass, energy, and momentum. This model has been validated by authors’ experiment work with the ability to predict the GALHP thermal performance at a reasonable accuracy. It was found that the GALHP thermal performance, represented by the reciprocal of overall thermal resistance, varies directly with applied heat load, evaporator diameter, vapour-liquid separator diameter, and mass flow rate of cooling fluid in the jacket, but inversely with condensation temperature.     Giant Second-Harmonic Generation Response and Large Band Gap in the Partially Fluorinated Mid-Infrared Oxide RbTeMo2O8F

    Strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) and a wide band gap are two crucial but often conflicting parameters that must be optimized for practical nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. We report herein the first d0-transition-metal (TM) tellurite with half of the d0-TM-octahedra partially fluorinated, namely, quinary RbTeMo2O8F, which exhibits giant SHG responses (27 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and 2.2 times that of KTiOPO4 (KTP) with 1064 and 2100 nm laser radiation, respectively), the largest SHG values among all reported metal tellurites. RbTeMo2O8F also possesses a large band gap (3.63 eV), a wide optical transparency window (0.34-5.40 ÎŒm), and a significant birefringence (Δn = 0.263 at 546 nm). Theoretical calculations and crystal structure analysis demonstrate that the outstanding SHG responses can be definitively attributed to the uniform alignment of the polarized [MoO5F]/[MoO6] octahedra and the seesaw-like [TeO4], and the consequent favorable summative polarization of the three distinct SHG-active polyhedra, both induced by partial fluorine substitution on the [MoO6] octahedra.This research was financially supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (no. 51432006), Ministry of Education of China for Changjiang Innovation Research Team (no.     A Congruent‐Melting Mid‐Infrared Nonlinear Optical Vanadate Exhibiting Strong Second‐Harmonic Generation

    Study of mid-infrared (mid-IR) nonlinear optical (NLO) materials is hindered by the competing requirements of optimized second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient dij and laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) as well as the harsh synthetic conditions. Herein, we report facile hydrothermal synthesis of a polar NLO vanadate Cs4V8O22 (CVO) featuring a quasi-rigid honeycomb-layered structure with [VO4] and [VO5] polyhedra aligned parallel. CVO possesses a wide IR-transparent window, high LIDT, and congruent-melting behavior. It has very strong phase-matchable SHG intensities in metal vanadate family (12.0 × KDP @ 1064 nm and 2.2 × AGS @ 2100 nm).     Effects of dietary sodium butyrate on growth performance, immune function, and intestinal microflora of Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis)

    The Chinese soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) has become increasingly susceptible to frequent diseases with the intensification of farming, which severely impacts the development of the aquaculture industry. Sodium butyrate (SB) is widely used as a feed additive due to its promotion of growth, enhancement of immune function, and antioxidative properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary SB on the growth performance, immune function, and intestinal microflora of Chinese soft-shelled turtles. A total of 300 Chinese soft-shelled turtles (mean weight: 11.36 ± 0.21g) were randomly divided into four groups with three parallel sets in each group. Each group was fed a diet supplemented with 0%, 0.005%, 0.01%, or 0.02% SB for 60 days. The results demonstrated an upward trend in weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) with increasing SB supplementation, and the experimental group fed with 0.02% SB showed a significant increase in WGR and SGR compared to other groups (P&lt; 0.05). These levels of SB also decreased the levels of feed conversion ratio (FCR) and the total cholesterol (TC) content of Chinese soft-shelled turtles, and the 0.02% SB was significantly lower than that of other groups (P&lt; 0.05). The activity of complement protein in vivo increased with increases in SB content, and the activities of complement C3 and C4 reached the highest level with 0.02% SB. The species abundance of the experimental group D fed with 0.02% SB was significantly higher than that of other groups (P&lt; 0.05). Furthermore, the relative abundance of Clostridium sensu stricto 1 was significantly increased with 0.02% SB (P&lt; 0.05). In conclusion, adding 0.02% SB to the diet improves the growth performance, feed digestion ability, and intestinal microbiota of Chinese soft-shelled turtles

    Pervasive hybridization during evolutionary radiation of Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes in mountains of southwest China

    Radiations are especially important for generating species biodiversity in mountainous ecosystems. The contribution of hybridization to such radiations has rarely been examined. Here, we use extensive genomic data to test whether hybridization was involved in evolutionary radiation within Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes, whose members show strong geographic isolation in the mountains of southwest China. We sequenced genomes for 143 species of this subgenus and 93 species of four other subgenera, and found that Hymenanthes was monophyletic and radiated during the late Oligocene to middle Miocene. Widespread hybridization events were inferred within and between the identified clades and subclades. This suggests that hybridization occurred both early and late during diversification of subgenus Hymenanthes, although the extent to which hybridization, speciation through mixing-isolation-mixing or hybrid speciation, accelerated the diversification needs further exploration. Cycles of isolation and contact in such and other montane ecosystems may have together promoted species radiation through hybridization between diverging populations and species. Similar radiation processes may apply to other montane floras in this region and elsewhere
