Bound state spectra of three-body muonic molecular ions
The results of highly accurate calculations are presented for all twenty-two
known bound and states in the six
three-body muonic molecular ions and
. A number of bound state properties of these muonic molecular ions have
been determined numerically to high accuracy. The dependence of the total
energies of these muonic molecules upon particle masses is considered. We also
discuss the current status of muon-catalysis of nuclear fusion reactions.Comment: This is the final version. All `techical' troubles with the

Well-posedness of Hydrodynamics on the Moving Elastic Surface
The dynamics of a membrane is a coupled system comprising a moving elastic
surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. We will consider a reduced
elastic surface model, which involves the evolution equations of the moving
surface, the dynamic equations of the two-dimensional fluid, and the
incompressible equation, all of which operate within a curved geometry. In this
paper, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the
reduced elastic surface model by reformulating the model into a new system in
the isothermal coordinates. One major difficulty is that of constructing an
appropriate iterative scheme such that the limit system is consistent with the
original system.Comment: The introduction is rewritte
Effect of an inhomogeneous external magnetic field on a quantum dot quantum computer
We calculate the effect of an inhomogeneous magnetic field, which is
invariably present in an experimental environment, on the exchange energy of a
double quantum dot artificial molecule, projected to be used as a 2-qubit
quantum gate in the proposed quantum dot quantum computer. We use two different
theoretical methods to calculate the Hilbert space structure in the presence of
the inhomogeneous field: the Heitler-London method which is carried out
analytically and the molecular orbital method which is done computationally.
Within these approximations we show that the exchange energy J changes slowly
when the coupled dots are subject to a magnetic field with a wide range of
inhomogeneity, suggesting swap operations can be performed in such an
environment as long as quantum error correction is applied to account for the
Zeeman term. We also point out the quantum interference nature of this slow
variation in exchange.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures embedded in tex
In-plane dipole coupling anisotropy of a square ferromagnetic Heisenberg monolayer
In this study we calculate the dipole-coupling-induced quartic in-plane
anisotropy of a square ferromagnetic Heisenberg monolayer. This anisotropy
increases with an increasing temperature, reaching its maximum value close to
the Curie temperature of the system. At T=0 the system is isotropic, besides a
small remaining anisotropy due to the zero-point motion of quantum mechanical
spins. The reason for the dipole-coupling-induced anisotropy is the disturbance
of the square spin lattice due to thermal fluctuations ('order-by-disorder'
effect). For usual ferromagnets its strength is small as compared to other
anisotropic contributions, and decreases by application of an external magnetic
field. The results are obtained from a Heisenberg Hamiltonian by application of
a mean field approach for a spin cluster, as well as from a many-body Green's
function theory within the Tyablikov-decoupling (RPA).Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in RP
Relativistic treatment of harmonics from impurity systems in quantum wires
Within a one particle approximation of the Dirac equation we investigate a
defect system in a quantum wire. We demonstrate that by minimally coupling a
laser field of frequency omega to such an impurity system, one may generate
harmonics of multiples of the driving frequency. In a multiple defect system
one may employ the distance between the defects in order to tune the cut-off
frequency.Comment: 9 pages Latex, 8 eps figures, section added, numerics improve
Dynamical model and nonextensive statistical mechanics of a market index on large time windows
The shape and tails of partial distribution functions (PDF) for a financial
signal, i.e. the S&P500 and the turbulent nature of the markets are linked
through a model encompassing Tsallis nonextensive statistics and leading to
evolution equations of the Langevin and Fokker-Planck type. A model originally
proposed to describe the intermittent behavior of turbulent flows describes the
behavior of normalized log-returns for such a financial market index, for small
and large time windows, both for small and large log-returns. These turbulent
market volatility (of normalized log-returns) distributions can be sufficiently
well fitted with a -distribution. The transition between the small time
scale model of nonextensive, intermittent process and the large scale Gaussian
extensive homogeneous fluctuation picture is found to be at a 200 day
time lag. The intermittency exponent () in the framework of the
Kolmogorov log-normal model is found to be related to the scaling exponent of
the PDF moments, -thereby giving weight to the model. The large value of
points to a large number of cascades in the turbulent process. The
first Kramers-Moyal coefficient in the Fokker-Planck equation is almost equal
to zero, indicating ''no restoring force''. A comparison is made between
normalized log-returns and mere price increments.Comment: 40 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in Phys Rev
Oscillations of a solid sphere falling through a wormlike micellar fluid
We present an experimental study of the motion of a solid sphere falling
through a wormlike micellar fluid. While smaller or lighter spheres quickly
reach a terminal velocity, larger or heavier spheres are found to oscillate in
the direction of their falling motion. The onset of this instability correlates
with a critical value of the velocity gradient scale
s. We relate this condition to the known complex rheology of wormlike
micellar fluids, and suggest that the unsteady motion of the sphere is caused
by the formation and breaking of flow-induced structures.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Interplay of quantum magnetic and potential scattering around Zn or Ni impurity ions in superconducting cuprates
To describe the scattering of superconducting quasiparticles from
non-magnetic (Zn) or magnetic (Ni) impurities in optimally doped high T
cuprates, we propose an effective Anderson model Hamiltonian of a localized
electron hybridizing with -wave BCS type superconducting
quasiparticles with an attractive scalar potential at the impurity site. Due to
the strong local antiferromagnetic couplings between the original Cu ions and
their nearest neighbors, the localized electron in the Ni-doped materials is
assumed to be on the impurity sites, while in the Zn-doped materials the
localized electron is distributed over the four nearest neighbor sites of the
impurities with a dominant symmetric form of the wave function.
With Ni impurities, two resonant states are formed above the Fermi level in the
local density of states at the impurity site, while for Zn impurities a sharp
resonant peak below the Fermi level dominates in the local density of states at
the Zn site, accompanied by a small and broad resonant state above the Fermi
level mainly induced by the potential scattering. In both cases, there are no
Kondo screening effects. The local density of states and their spatial
distribution at the dominant resonant energy around the substituted impurities
are calculated for both cases, and they are in good agreement with the
experimental results of scanning tunneling microscopy in
BiSrCaCuO with Zn or Ni impurities, respectively.Comment: 24 pages, Revtex, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review B for

Magneto-transport in a quantum network: Evidence of a mesoscopic switch
We investigate magneto-transport properties of a shaped three-arm
mesoscopic ring where the upper and lower sub-rings are threaded by
Aharonov-Bohm fluxes and , respectively, within a
non-interacting electron picture. A discrete lattice model is used to describe
the quantum network in which two outer arms are subjected to binary alloy
lattices while the middle arm contains identical atomic sites. It is observed
that the presence of the middle arm provides localized states within the band
of extended regions and lead to the possibility of switching action from a high
conducting state to a low conducting one and vice versa. This behavior is
justified by studying persistent current in the network. Both the total current
and individual currents in three separate branches are computed by using
second-quantized formalism and our idea can be utilized to study magnetic
response in any complicated quantum network. The nature of localized
eigenstates are also investigated from probability amplitudes at different
sites of the quantum device.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure
Electron spin as a spectrometer of nuclear spin noise and other fluctuations
This chapter describes the relationship between low frequency noise and
coherence decay of localized spins in semiconductors. Section 2 establishes a
direct relationship between an arbitrary noise spectral function and spin
coherence as measured by a number of pulse spin resonance sequences. Section 3
describes the electron-nuclear spin Hamiltonian, including isotropic and
anisotropic hyperfine interactions, inter-nuclear dipolar interactions, and the
effective Hamiltonian for nuclear-nuclear coupling mediated by the electron
spin hyperfine interaction. Section 4 describes a microscopic calculation of
the nuclear spin noise spectrum arising due to nuclear spin dipolar flip-flops
with quasiparticle broadening included. Section 5 compares our explicit
numerical results to electron spin echo decay experiments for phosphorus doped
silicon in natural and nuclear spin enriched samples.Comment: Book chapter in "Electron spin resonance and related phenomena in low
dimensional structures", edited by Marco Fanciulli. To be published by
