    Nemonoxacin (Taigexyn<sup>ÂŽ</sup>): A New Non-Fluorinated Quinolone

    Nemonoxacin (Taigexyn®), a novel C-8-methoxy non-fluorinated quinolone, has been approved for use in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Taiwan (2014) and mainland China (2016). The FDA granted nemonoxacin ‘qualified infectious disease product’ and ‘fast-track’ designations for CAP and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infection in December 2013. It possesses a broad spectrum of bactericidal activity against typical and atypical respiratory pathogens. In particular, nemonoxacin has activity against resistant Gram-positive cocci, including penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Oral nemonoxacin was compared with oral levofloxacin for efficacy and safety in three randomized, double-blinded, controlled Phase II–III clinical trials for the treatment of CAP. This article will review the microbiological profile of nemonoxacin against respiratory pathogens including S. pneumoniae and S. aureus, and microbiological outcome data from the three Phase II–III studies

    Tailoring excitonic states of van der Waals bilayers through stacking configuration, band alignment and valley-spin

    Excitons in monolayer semiconductors have large optical transition dipole for strong coupling with light field. Interlayer excitons in heterobilayers, with layer separation of electron and hole components, feature large electric dipole that enables strong coupling with electric field and exciton-exciton interaction, at the cost that the optical dipole is substantially quenched (by several orders of magnitude). In this letter, we demonstrate the ability to create a new class of excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hetero- and homo-bilayers that combines the advantages of monolayer- and interlayer-excitons, i.e. featuring both large optical dipole and large electric dipole. These excitons consist of an electron that is well confined in an individual layer, and a hole that is well extended in both layers, realized here through the carrier-species specific layer-hybridization controlled through the interplay of rotational, translational, band offset, and valley-spin degrees of freedom. We observe different species of such layer-hybridized valley excitons in different heterobilayer and homobilayer systems, which can be utilized for realizing strongly interacting excitonic/polaritonic gases, as well as optical quantum coherent controls of bidirectional interlayer carrier transfer either with upper conversion or down conversion in energy

    Anatomical Asymmetry in Goiter: A Demonstration by Three-dimensional Power Doppler Ultrasound

    The aim of the present study was to examine the anatomical differences in volumetric and intraparenchymal vascular parameters between the two thyroid lobes of patients with goiter, using three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound. A total of 89 outpatients with goiter, including 55 with autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) and 34 with simple goiter (SG), were evaluated by three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound. Volumetric and intraparenchymal vascular indices including vascularization index, flow index and vascular flow index of each lobe were measured using the Virtual Organ Computer-Aided Analysis system. In all patients with goiter, the volume and vascular indices (vascularization index, flow index and vascular flow index) of the right thyroid lobe were significantly greater than those of the left lobe (p < 0.05). Differences in vascular indices were present in SG but not in ATD. ATD was associated with a larger thyroid volume and higher vascular indices compared with those of SG (p < 0.001), but there were no significant differences in volumetry and vascular indices between euthyroid ATD and SG. In conclusion, the right thyroid lobe was found to be significantly larger and more vascular than the left lobe in subjects with goiter, as measured by three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound.     Genetic diversity and C2-like subgenogroup strains of enterovirus 71, Taiwan, 2008

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human enterovirus 71 (EV-71) is known of having caused numerous outbreaks of hand-foot-mouth disease, and other clinical manifestations globally. In 2008, 989 EV-71 strains were isolated in Taiwan.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In this study, the genetic and antigenic properties of these strains were analyzed and the genetic diversity of EV-71 subgenogroups surfacing in Taiwan was depicted, which includes 3 previously reported subgenogroups of C5, B5, and C4, and one C2-like subgenogroup. Based on the phylogenetic analyses using their complete genome nucleotide sequences and neutralization tests, the C2-like subgenogroup forms a genetically distinct cluster from other subgenogroups, and the antisera show a maximum of 128-fold decrease of neutralization titer against this subgenogroup. In addition, the subgenogroup C4 isolates of 2008 were found quite similar genetically to the Chinese strains that caused outbreaks in recent years and thus they should be carefully watched.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Other than to be the first report describing the existence of C2-like subgenogroup of EV-71 in Taiwan, this article also foresees a potential of subgenogroup C4 outbreaks in Taiwan in the near future.</p

    A single amino acid substitution in PthA of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri altering canker formation on grapefruit leaves

    The typical citrus canker lesions produced by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri are erumpent, callus-like, with water-soaked margins. Three novel atypical symptom-producing variants of X. axonopodis pv. citri were described recently in Taiwan. Only the variant designated as A(f) type produces typical erumpent canker lesions on Mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia) but induces flat necrotic with water-soaked margin lesions on grapefruit leaves (C. paradisi). Two homologous pthA were cloned and characterized from strains XW19 (a typical canker lesion producing strain) and XW47 (a strain of A(f) type). The pthA homolog from XW19 was transformed into XW47. The transformant of XW47 induced typical erumpent canker lesions on grapefruit leaves. Sequence analyses of transformants XW19 and XW47 revealed over 99% homology in nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequences compared with pthA homologs deposited in GenBank. The amino acid residues located at positions 49, 286, 742 and 767 of PthA were different between XW47 and XW19. The PthA mutants with a single amino acid substitution at each of these four positions were constructed by site-directed mutagenesis. Modified PthA (S286P) from XW47 in transformant 47SP induced erumpent canker lesions on grapefruit leaves, whereas another modified PthA (P286S) from XW19 in transformant 47PS only induced flat necrotic lesions. These results suggested that a single amino acid substitution from either serine to proline or proline to serine at position 286 of PthA can alter canker formation by X. axonopodis pv. citri on grapefruit leaves

    Application of Advanced Framework Technology in Smart Cities to Improve Resource Utilization

    Nowadays, the application technology and demand are growth; there have been millions of solutions for user communication in smart cities. However, the quality of the autonomy of handheld devices and the information exchange of applications are functions of requesting services or participating in communications. Therefore, it is very difficult and tedious to implement resource management and control in such an environment. This study here proposes distributed cyber-physical systems (CPS) for agent-based middleware framework (AMF) using to achieve technology, thereby improving the reliability of environmental communication in smart cities. The technical solution has the characteristics of avoiding the problem of data source interruption because of the proxy technology of the linear calculation model. The aforementioned agents are independent and autonomous of each other in terms of providing seamless resource sharing and response scheduling, and have nothing to do with communication time and request queries. In this study, the architecture mainly uses the best linear calculation model to classify overlapping agents, and then allocates non-overlapping resources, and finally analyzes the overall architecture operation performance by responding to processed queries, storage utilization and resource usage, pause time and response
