Unconventional Fermi surface in insulating SmB6 and superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x probed by high magnetic fields
Fermi surface, the locus in momentum space of gapless low-energy excitations, is a concept of fundamental importance in solid state physics. Electronic properties of a material are determined by the long-lived low-energy excitations near the Fermi surface. Conventionally, Fermi surface is understood as a property exclusive to a metallic state, contoured by electronic bands crossed by the Fermi level, although there has been a continuing effort in searching for Fermi surface outside the conventional description. In this thesis, techniques developed to prepare high-quality single crystals of SmB and YBaCuO (abbreviated as YBCO hereinafter) are described. By utilising measurement techniques of exceptional sensitivity and exploring a wide range of temperatures, magnetic fields, and electrical currents, we found signatures of unconventional Fermi surfaces beyond the traditional description in these strongly correlated electronic systems.
SmB is a classic example of Kondo insulators whose insulating behaviour arises due to strong correlation between the itinerant -electrons and localised -electrons. The peculiar resistivity plateau onsets below 4 K has been a decades-long puzzle whose origin has been recently proposed as the manifestation of topological conducting surface states. We found that the insulating behaviour in electrical transport is robust against magnetic fields up to 45 T, while prominent quantum oscillations in magnetisation are observed above 10 T. Angular dependence of the quantum oscillations revealed a three-dimensional characteristics with an absolute amplitude consistent with a bulk origin, and temperature dependence showed a surprising departure from the conventional Lifshitz-Kosevich formalism. Complementary thermodynamic measurements showed results consistent with a Fermi surface originating from neutral itinerant low-energy excitations at low temperatures. Theoretical proposals of the unconventional ground state uncovered by our measurements in SmB are discussed.
YBCO is a high-temperature superconductor with a maximum of 93.5 K and the cleanest member in the family of copper-oxide, or {\it cuprate}, superconductors. The correct description of electronic ground state in the enigmatic pseudogap regime, where the antinodal density of states are suppressed below a characteristic temperature above , has been a subject of active debates. While the quantum oscillations observed in underdoped YBCO have been predominately interpreted as a property of the normal state where the superconducting parameter is completely suppressed at 23 T, we made the discovery that YBCO exhibits zero resistivity up to 45 T when a low electrical current is used, consistent with the observation of a hysteresis loop in magnetisation. Quantum oscillations in the underdoped YBCO are thus seen to coexist with -wave superconductivity. Characteristics of the quantum oscillations are consistent with an isolated Fermi pocket reconstructed by a charge density wave order parameter and unaccompanied by significant background density of states, suggesting the antinodal density of states is completely gapped out by a strong order parameter involving pairing correlations, potentially in addition to the other order parameters. Transport measurements performed over a wide doping range show signatures consistent with pairing correlations that persist up to the pseudogap temperature .
The surprising observation of quantum oscillations in insulating SmB and superconducting YBCO demonstrates a possible new paradigm of a Fermi surface without a conventional Fermi liquid. A new theoretical framework outside the realm of Fermi liquid theory may be needed to discuss the physics in these strongly correlated materials with enticing electronic properties.Ministry of Education, Taiwa
Neuroprotective Effects of San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang in the MPP+/MPTP Models of Parkinson's Disease In Vitro and In Vivo
San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang (SHXT), composed of Coptidis rhizoma, Scutellariae radix, and Rhei rhizoma, is a traditional Chinese medicine used for complementary and alternative therapy of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases via its anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effects of SHXT in the 1–methyl–4–phenylpyridinium (MPP+)/1–methyl–4–phenyl–1,2,3,6–tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) models of Parkinson's disease. Rat primary mesencephalic neurons and mouse Parkinson disease model were used in this study. Oxidative stress was induced by MPP+ in vitro and MPTP in vivo. In MPP+-treated mesencephalic neuron cultures, SHXT significantly increased the numbers of TH-positive neurons. SHXT reduced apoptotic signals (cytochrome and caspase) and apoptotic death. MPP+-induced gp91phox activation and ROS production were attenuated by SHXT. In addition, SHXT increased the levels of GSH and SOD in MPP+-treated neurons. In MPTP animal model, SHXT markedly increased TH-positive neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and improved motor activity of mice. In conclusion, the present results reveal the evidence that SHXT possesses beneficial protection against MPTP-induced neurotoxicity in this model of Parkinson's disease via its antioxidative and antiapoptotic effects. SHXT might be a potentially alternative and complementary medicine for neuroprotection
Twin Pregnancy with Gastroschisis in Both Twins
SUMMARYObjectiveGastroschisis is a congenital malformation characterized by an abdominal wall defect located laterally to a normal umbilicus. The cause of gastroschisis is unknown, but most authors consider it exogenous. We describe the case of a woman with a twin pregnancy in which both twins had gastroschisis.Case ReportA 17-year-old primiparous female was referred to our institution because of a twin pregnancy, with one twin diagnosed with gastroschisis at 34 weeks of gestation. Unfortunately, gastroschisis was noted in both twins, but no other anomalies were observed under level II sonographic evaluation. The twins were delivered by cesarean section at 36+weeks of gestation because of preterm labor and breech presentation of one fetus. Both twins presented with a 3-cm abdominal wall defect located to the right side of the umbilicus and a large portion of the bowel protruding that was not covered by membrane. Histopathology of the placenta revealed that the twins were diamniotic monochorionic. Chromosomal analysis of cord blood showed normal karyotype (46, XX) in both newborns.ConclusionThe cause of gastroschisis is unknown, although possible exogenous causes have been studied. The diagnosis of gastroschisis in twin pregnancy is always in late gestation. Therefore, maternal serum alpha feto-protein screening and a detailed prenatal ultrasound evaluation are recommended in multifetal pregnancies
PGT-Net: Progressive Guided Multi-task Neural Network for Small-area Wet Fingerprint Denoising and Recognition
Fingerprint recognition on mobile devices is an important method for identity
verification. However, real fingerprints usually contain sweat and moisture
which leads to poor recognition performance. In addition, for rolling out
slimmer and thinner phones, technology companies reduce the size of recognition
sensors by embedding them with the power button. Therefore, the limited size of
fingerprint data also increases the difficulty of recognition. Denoising the
small-area wet fingerprint images to clean ones becomes crucial to improve
recognition performance. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end trainable
progressive guided multi-task neural network (PGT-Net). The PGT-Net includes a
shared stage and specific multi-task stages, enabling the network to train
binary and non-binary fingerprints sequentially. The binary information is
regarded as guidance for output enhancement which is enriched with the ridge
and valley details. Moreover, a novel residual scaling mechanism is introduced
to stabilize the training process. Experiment results on the FW9395 and
FT-lightnoised dataset provided by FocalTech shows that PGT-Net has promising
performance on the wet-fingerprint denoising and significantly improves the
fingerprint recognition rate (FRR). On the FT-lightnoised dataset, the FRR of
fingerprint recognition can be declined from 17.75% to 4.47%. On the FW9395
dataset, the FRR of fingerprint recognition can be declined from 9.45% to
1.09%

Intrinsic Bulk Quantum Oscillations in a Bulk Unconventional Insulator SmB6.
The finding of bulk quantum oscillations in the Kondo insulator SmB6 proved a considerable surprise. Subsequent measurements of bulk quantum oscillations in other correlated insulators including YbB12 lent support to our discovery of a class of bulk unconventional insulators that host bulk quantum oscillations. Here we perform a series of experiments to examine evidence for the intrinsic character of bulk quantum oscillations in floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB6 that have been the subject of our quantum oscillation studies. We present results of thermodynamic, transport, and composition analysis experiments on pristine floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB6 and compare quantum oscillations with metallic LaB6 and elemental aluminum. These results establish the intrinsic origin of quantum oscillations from the insulating bulk of floating zone-grown SmB6. The similarity of the Fermi surface in insulating SmB6 with the conduction-electron Fermi surface in metallic hexaborides is at the heart of a theoretical mystery
