Observation and absolute frequency measurements of the 1S0 - 3P0 optical clock transition in ytterbium
We report the direct excitation of the highly forbidden (6s^2) 1S0 - (6s6p)
3P0 optical transition in two odd isotopes of ytterbium. As the excitation
laser frequency is scanned, absorption is detected by monitoring the depletion
from an atomic cloud at ~70 uK in a magneto-optical trap. The measured
frequency in 171Yb (F=1/2) is 518,295,836,593.2 +/- 4.4 kHz. The measured
frequency in 173Yb (F=5/2) is 518,294,576,850.0 +/- 4.4 kHz. Measurements are
made with a femtosecond-laser frequency comb calibrated by the NIST cesium
fountain clock and represent nearly a million-fold reduction in uncertainty.
The natural linewidth of these J=0 to J=0 transitions is calculated to be ~10
mHz, making them well-suited to support a new generation of optical atomic
clocks based on confinement in an optical lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Preface
The Seventeenth General Meeting of the American Towing Tank Conference was held in Pasadena, California, from 18th to 20th June 1974, in Baxter Auditorium of the California Institute of Technology. The Conference consisted of Welcoming Messages, five Technical Sessions, a General Business Session and Closing Remarks. In addition, a reception-dinner program and a tour of several laboratories at the Institute were arranged for the participants and accompanying family members. The Conference was attended by about 90 delegates and observers, representing thirty-three different professional establishments and universities
Optical Lattice Induced Light Shifts in an Yb Atomic Clock
We present an experimental study of the lattice induced light shifts on the
1S_0-3P_0 optical clock transition (v_clock~518 THz) in neutral ytterbium. The
``magic'' frequency, v_magic, for the 174Yb isotope was determined to be 394
799 475(35)MHz, which leads to a first order light shift uncertainty of 0.38 Hz
on the 518 THz clock transition. Also investigated were the hyperpolarizability
shifts due to the nearby 6s6p 3P_0 - 6s8p 3P_0, 6s8p 3P_2, and 6s5f 3F_2
two-photon resonances at 759.708 nm, 754.23 nm, and 764.95 nm respectively. By
tuning the lattice frequency over the two-photon resonances and measuring the
corresponding clock transition shifts, the hyperpolarizability shift was
estimated to be 170(33) mHz for a linear polarized, 50 uK deep, lattice at the
magic wavelength. In addition, we have confirmed that a circularly polarized
lattice eliminates the J=0 - J=0 two-photon resonance. These results indicate
that the differential polarizability and hyperpolarizability frequency shift
uncertainties in a Yb lattice clock could be held to well below 10^-17.Comment: Accepted to PR
Quality of Relationships with Parents and Friends in Adolescence Predicts Metabolic Risk in Young Adulthood
Objective:
This study was designed to examine whether family and peer relationships in adolescence predict the emergence of metabolic risk factors in young adulthood. Method:
Participants from a large, nationally representative cohort study (N = 11,617 for these analyses) reported on their relationship experiences with parents and close friends during adolescence. Fourteen years later, interviewers collected blood samples, as well as anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Blood samples were analyzed for HbA1c.
Results:
Ordered logistic regressions revealed that for females, supportive parent–child relationships and close male friendships in adolescence were associated with reduced odds of having elevated metabolic risk markers in young adulthood. These effects remained significant even after controlling for baseline measures of body mass index (BMI) and health and demographic covariates. The protective effects of close relationships were not significant for males, however. Exploratory analyses with 2-parent families revealed that supportive father–child relationships were especially protective for females.
Conclusions:
These findings suggest that, for females, close and supportive relationships with parents and male friends in adolescence may reduce the risk of metabolic dysregulation in adulthood
A Variant in a MicroRNA complementary site in the 3' UTR of the KIT oncogene increases risk of acral melanoma.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small ∼22nt single stranded RNAs that negatively regulate protein expression by binding to partially complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated region (3' UTRs) of target gene messenger RNAs (mRNA). Recently, mutations have been identified in both miRNAs and target genes that disrupt regulatory relationships, contribute to oncogenesis and serve as biomarkers for cancer risk. KIT, an established oncogene with a multifaceted role in melanogenesis and melanoma pathogenesis, has recently been shown to be upregulated in some melanomas, and is also a target of the miRNA miR-221. Here, we describe a genetic variant in the 3' UTR of the KIT oncogene that correlates with a greater than fourfold increased risk of acral melanoma. This KIT variant results in a mismatch in the seed region of a miR-221 complementary site and reporter data suggests that this mismatch can result in increased expression of the KIT oncogene. Consistent with the hypothesis that this is a functional variant, KIT mRNA and protein levels are both increased in the majority of samples harboring the KIT variant. Superconducting proximity effect in a mesoscopic ferromagnetic wire
We present an experimental study of the transport properties of a
ferromagnetic metallic wire (Co) in metallic contact with a superconductor
(Al). As the temperature is decreased below the Al superconducting transition,
the Co resistance exhibits a significant dependence on both temperature and
voltage. The differential resistance data show that the decay length for the
proximity effect is much larger than we would simply expect from the exchange

SLC polarized beam source ultra-high-vacuum design
This paper describes the design of the ultra-high vacuum system for the beam-line from the 160-kV polarized electron gun to the linac injector in the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC). The polarized electron source is a GaAs photocathode, requiring 10{sup {minus}11}-Torr-range pressure for adequate quantum efficiency and longevity. The photo-cathode is illuminated by 3-nsec-long laser pulses. Photo-cathode maintenance and improvements require occasional substitution of guns with rapid restoration of UHV conditions. Differential pumping is crucial since the pressure in the injector is more than 10 times greater than the photocathode can tolerate, and since electron-stimulated gas desorption from beam loss in excess of 0.1% of the 20-nC pulses may poison the photocathode. Our design for the transport line contains a differential pumping region isolated by a pair of valves. Exchange of guns requires venting only this isolated region which can be restored to UHV rapidly by baking. The differential pumping is performed by non-evaporable getters (NEGs) and an ion pump. 3 refs., 3 figs
