    BokmÄlsordboka og Nynorskordboka gjennom ein generasjon

    The standard one-volume monolingual dictionaries BokmÄls - ordboka and Nynorskordboka for the two official forms of Norwegian were launched in 1986. They were edited as a joint project of the Language Council of Norway and the University of Oslo. The focus is on both orthography and definitions. The dictionaries have been available on the web since 1994, and are now both linked to word banks with full forms of updated official orthography. The last years the website has been updated, and there has been technical and also lexicographic upgrade. During 2012 there were 70 million hits. Further technical and lexicographic revision ought to be done for both books

The types of data extracted from each source are described. The data were combined in to the compilation format of Nynorskordlista. Some advantages of the method are discussed

    There are many bilingual dictionaries between Norwegian and the other Nordiclanguages, differing a lot in size, age etc. The paper deals with the use of either ofthe written standards Nynorsk and BokmĂ„l – or both – as source languages and targetlanguages in these dictionaries.BokmĂ„l developed from Danish, which was the only written language in Norwayfor centuries. Nynorsk is based on the dialects of Norway and was launched as awritten norm for a new Norwegian language about 1850. The linguistic differencebetween the two standards is relatively small, partly because of spelling reforms.More than half the vocabulary is common to the two standards. The standards are bylaw given equal official standing, but BokmĂ„l has remained the majority writtenlanguage. Most bilingual dictionaries from or to Norwegian are in BokmĂ„l, mostly ina more traditional subvariety than the official BokmĂ„l standard.In several of the newer bilingual dictionaries from Norwegian to a Nordic languageBokmĂ„l and Nynorsk are united in one list, with common words and formsunmarked, whereas specific words and forms have different markers. In some of thedictionaries the source language is mainly BokmĂ„l, supplemented with the mostfrequent Nynorsk words. – This way of dealing with the bilingual situation in Norwayseems at last partly successful, although it does have its problems.There are also bilingual Nordic dictionaries where the source language is monolingualNynorsk or BokmĂ„l.As a target language BokmĂ„l is the dominant language. There are a couple ofdictionaries with Nynorsk as target language, and one dictionary which combines thetwo in a somewhat complicated and space-demanding system.It is desirable to have bilingual dictionaries to and from both written standardsof Norwegian. It is possible to combine them as source language, but hardly as targetlanguage

    This article presents the material from an online survey in 2014 which reveals if, how and in what way teachers and their students in the Norwegian schools use and relate to monolingual online dictionaries in Norwegian. 487 teachers and 5172 students from all over Norway responded to the survey. The findings are interesting with respect to several of the objectives of The Language Council of Norway, among others the responsibility to promote the two Norwegian written standards BokmÄl and Nynorsk in the classrooms and ensure that the dictionaries are up to date
