Nursing students motivations and satisfaction, Do the motivation and satisfaction of nursing students change during their study years?
Background: Study the level of nursing students` motivations and satisfaction may help policy makers to develop training plans to improve graduates skills and commitment. This study was conducted to investigate nursing students' motivations and satisfaction during study years at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of medical sciences. Methods:It was a cross-sectional study to explore 197 nursing students' viewpoints about their fields. A validated and reliable self-made questionnaire was developed and used. Data analysis was carried out by descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-test using SPSS software (version 16). Results: The study findings showed that the most crucial motivation factors to select nursing course were “job security” and “interest in medical science” with means 3.94 and 3.68 respectively. The mean satisfaction score of the nursing students was under average (2.75). There was significant difference between mean satisfaction scores of the first and last year students (respectively, 3.69 vs. 2.90 p=0.0001). Conclusion: Level of nursing students' satisfaction get reduces after university entrance and during study years gradually. Key words: Nursing student, motivation, satisfactio
The Relationship of Self-esteem and Studying Approaches with Academic Achievement of University Students
Background & Objective: Identification of the role of factors such as self-esteem and studying approaches in academic achievement could lead to improved educational programming and reinforced teaching output. This study was performed to determine the relationship of academic achievement with self-esteem and approaches to studying among university students. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted on 147 nursing and midwifery students of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences, Iran, in 2012. The mean of grade point average (GPA) during the past semester was considered as the index for academic achievement. Data collection was performed using the approaches and study skills inventory for students (ASSIST) and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale (RSES). Data were analyzed using independent sample t-test, and the Pearson correlation coefficient and the SPSS statistical software. Conclusion: Studying approaches and self-esteem can have an important role in the academic achievement of university students. Thus, it may be possible to promote the academic achievement of students by improving their self-esteem and guiding them to use appropriate approaches to studying. Correlation between Educational Satisfaction and Approaches to Study and Academic Performance a Study of Nursing and Midwifery students
Introduction: It is important to pay attention to educational satisfaction and approaches to study for learning and academic performance. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between nursing students' educational satisfaction and with approaches to study and academic performance.
Methods: This descriptive co-relational study was conducted on 149 students of Nursing and Midwifery School of Ahvaz University of Medical Sciences, selected by convenience sampling method during 2012-2013 academic years. The data were collected using standardized questionnaires of study approaches (ASSIST) and educational satisfaction which their validity and reliability were determined. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation coefficient and independent t tests.
Results: The mean score of students’ educational satisfaction was 51.9±10.9 (range of scores: 14-70), and the mean score of deep and surface approaches the study were 59.9±6.3 and 53.5±8.4 respectively (range of scores 16-80). There was a statistically significant correlation between educational satisfaction and academic performance (p=0.015, r=0.2). In addition there was a positive correlation between educational satisfaction and deep approaches to study (p=0.002, r=0.26) and a negative correlation between educational satisfaction and surface approaches to study (p=0.003, r= - 0.24).
Conclusion: With regard to the association between students’ educational satisfaction and their academic performances, paying attention to the role of educational satisfaction seems to be necessary considering students’ further academic achievements in university level

Background and aims: Nursing process is performance Standard for nursing cares. According to their conditions and facilities, various centers can choose and implement a nursing process that is more efficient for them. This study was aimed to determine the effect of nursing process the way "accessible care cards" on patientschr('39') satisfaction from care in intensive care units.
Methods: This is a cross-sectional interventional study with plan case-control study that was conducted in Golestan hospital in Ahwaz in 2014. Considering the inclusion criteria and available sampling method, a total of 38 controls and 38 cases were selected for the intervention group were evaluated. Data were collected questionnaire made by researcher, which was assess the scientific validity, the content validity method were used validated. As well as its reliability using Cronbachchr('39')s alpha test (α= 0.9) was determined. Intervention was conducted by accessible care cards in nursing process for two weeks and its impact on patient satisfaction was measured. The control group was routine care. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS 19 and statistical tests. Descriptive statistics such as mean, and standard deviation was used. Chi-square test, Mann-whitney and t-test were used to compare groups.
Results: Results showed that 28.90% of patients in the control group had great satisfaction of care, while the 97.36% of patients in the intervention group reported nearly excellent satisfaction. The observed difference in patientschr('39') satisfaction with nursing care in both the experimental and control group was statistically significant (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Implementation of nursing process, in a manner of available cards led to an increase in patient satisfaction compared with the routine manner and the use of these cards makes the nursing process of a greater degree of mental state, to objectively state, that can help in saving a lot of time for nurses
The Effect of Two Assessment Methods on Exam Preparation and Study Strategies: Multiple Choice and Essay Questions
Introduction: Utilizing appropriate approaches to study and learning can improve students’ academic performance. Recent studies have shown that students’ learning approaches are influenced by several factors including the type of assessment. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of multiple-choice tests (MCQ) and essay tests on the nursing students’ learning approaches.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study was done on 124 students from the School of Nursing & Midwifery of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in 2011-2012. Subjects were divided into two groups based on the type of exam questions, one group multiple choice questions group and the other essay questions group. In this study, two questionnaires of study approaches (32 items) and exam preparation strategies (28 questions) were used. Validity and reliability of the questionnaires were confirmed. Both groups completed the questionnaires at the beginning and the end of the semester. Statistical analysis was performed by paired sample T test.
Results: There was a significant difference between the deep approaches to study scores in students regarding essay type exams (3.70±0.37 vs.3.75±0.33, p=0.008). There was a statistically significant difference in the deep approaches to study in female students regarding essay type exams at the beginning and end of the semester (3.66±0.37 vs. 3.73±0.34 respectively, p=0.001) there was a statistically significant difference in the surface approaches to study in male students regarding MCQ exams at the beginning and end of the semester (3.34±0.46 vs. 3.63±0.60 respectively, p=0.05).
Conclusion: The results showed that the application of essay type tests method for students’ evaluation could lead to a preference for deep approaches to study. It is suggested that this method be used in evaluating students to provide the opportunity to encourage deep approaches to study
Comparing the Effect of Breast-Feeding and Oral Glucose on Infants Vaccination Pain
Background and Objective: Ignoring pain especially in infancy causes serious complications. Considering recent studies about
sedative effect of breast-feeding and oral glucose on neonates, this study was
performed to survey each method after neonatal period.
 Materials and Methods: This study is a triple blind clinical trial on 211 infants aged 2, 4,and 6 months, which were randomly categorized into
control, breast-fed, and oral glucose groups. Interventions were performed two minutes before
injecting DPT vaccine.  The infants’ reactions were recorded before,
during, and after intervention. Two experts evaluated pain intensity by Modified
Behavioral Pain Scale (MBPS). The
crying duration was measure by chronometer in second.
 Results:Â
Pain intensities for breast-fed, oral glucose, and control groups were
5.77±0.18, 6.63±0.16, and 5.87±0.22, respectively. Least
Significant Difference (LSD) test showed that MBPS was significantly lower in breast-fed compared to oral glucose
group (P value=0.014). The difference between breast-fed and
control groups was not significant. Crying duration did
not have significant difference among the three groups.
Conclusion: It seems that breast-feeding has
better effect on vaccination pain compared to oral glucose
The Effect of Ten Life Skills on Quality of Life in Adolescents with Thalassemia
Introduction: Chronic diseases, including Thalassemia, have a profound effect on the functioning and overall life of the individual, especially at an early age. Given the low quality of life of adolescents with thalassemia and the importance of their function in society, this study aimed to determine the impact of applying life skills on quality of life in adolescents in Ahwaz in 2018.
Methods: This quasi-experimental study was performed on 84 adolescents with thalassemia major referred to Thalassemia Clinic of Baqa'i Hospital, Ahwaz city, Iran. The study was conducted from 2018 to 2020. Adolescents were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. Both groups completed the demographic information questionnaire and the Kidney Screening Questionnaire for Quality of Life of the Teenager 52. Then the experimental group received the educational content (holding a class, Q&A and booklet) for 6 sessions of 2-hour. The control group did not receive any training. Data were analyzed by SPSS 22 and Chi-square, independent t-test, and paired t-test.
Results: The results showed that the difference between the mean of quality of life in the two groups of control and intervention was not significant (P<0.05) in pre-test. Also, post-hoc test (assuming non-homogeneity of variances) also showed a significant difference in mean of quality of life in post-test in both intervention and control groups (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Teaching ten life skills can have a significant impact on improving the quality of life of adolescents with thalassemia and can be used as an effective measure in this regard
