A marxist reading of miss Julie

    Get PDF
Written in the Victorian era, a period noteworthy for its strict ideological dictates, Miss Julie is a sociological play in which the dominant social paradigms control, alienate, and bring about psychological problems for the subjects. If this play be read from a Marxist perspective, it can be obtained how the repressive ideologies of the capitalistic government such as hierarchy and religion are manipulated to control the exploited and dominated class symbolized here by Jean and Kristin and their petty bourgeois mistress, Julie. Both class hierarchy and religion are understood to oppress the individuals, to make them subordinate subjects who internalize the ideological values and belief system of the bourgeoisie. In Miss Julie, Strindberg shows how the hero and heroine are obsessed to achieve their personal needs by any means; what the bourgeoisie strongly supports. Other Marxist terms such as, hailing the subject or interpellation, false consciousness, sign-exchange value, and commodification are also recurrent in this play

Louis Althusser and Thomas Hardy: how Victorian ideologies work in under the Greenwood tree

In his early novel, Under the Greenwood Tree, Thomas Hardy attempts to show the readers how the inhabitants of a small village are repressed by the ideologies the dominant class or capitalism defines for them. The aim of these suppressive programs is to oppress the individuals by making them good and subordinate subjects. Althusser calls these ideologies created by the dominant class, Ideological State Apparatuses; however, in this novel one observes how some of the subjects try to revolt against these cruel rules by defining their own ideologies. One can also recognize that how the blatant break of these ideological programs by the revolutionary subject makes the subject look weird and eventually how he/she is alienated and marginalized by the society. On the other hand, the good subjects are made to believe that following these ideologies is usual and breaking of them is synonymous with interfering with the discipline and order of nature. Brought up in the Victorian age, Hardy understands how people are controlled by the ideologies and how they subscribe to them unwisely. In this novel he shows how a new and up-date product of capitalism -the organ- is introduced to a very traditional atmosphere in order to indoctrinate new changes in it. The so-called good subjects simply believe that change is necessary and inevitable. But this change has wisely planned by the oppressive capitalist powers for whom this change means the manipulation of these docile subjects, not only by separating them from their music community but also by depriving them of their traditional music

Web based fuzzy diagnosis system and evaluation for five diseases with sort throat symptom

    Get PDF
Automatic disease diagnosis has been human concern for a long time. Since people are so busy and the doctors visit expenses areso expensive, a lot of different attempts have been done in the field of design of expert system for disease diagnosis. This paper describes aproject work aiming to develop a web based fuzzy expert system for human disease diagnosis. This program models the thinking pattern andhuman activity and leads to close the expert system and human action method. In this paper we have consulted with different physicians andanalyzed the diagnosis procedure and modeled them with a fuzzy expert system. This project is based on development of a web-based clinicaltool designed to improve the quality of the exchange of health information between health care professionals and patients . This system hasbeen tested on five diseases with sort throat symptom such as mononucleosis, scarlet fever, pharyngitis or tonsillitis, common cold and virusinfection and exhibited satisfactory results

Locating Post Offices Using Fuzzy Goal Programming and Geographical Information System (GIS)

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the problem of locating new post offices in a megacity. To do so, a combination of geographicalinformation system (GIS) and fuzzy goal programming (FGP) is used. In order to locate new offices, first six types of servicefacilities with high levels of interactions with post offices are defined. Then, aspiration level of proximity for each servicefacility is determined. Based on these values, a fuzzy goal programming model is constructed to find potential locations offacilities. In order to determine the optimal locations among potential facilities, a maximal covering location problem(MCLP) is solved and results are reported. Results show that although the current state is near-optimal, for future expansionsof the network, the government should spend money on central and southern parts of this megacity
