    Fully relativistic two-component-spinor approach in the ultrasoft-pseudopotential plane-wave method

    金沢大学大学院自然科学研究科計算科学金沢大学理学部We have introduced effects of spin-orbit interaction nonperturbatively to the ultrasoft-pseudopotential scheme accompanied by two component spinor wave functions. Application to the electronic structure calculations of some heavy elements successfully reproduced results of the all electron approaches. The magnetic anisotropy energy and the orbital magnetic moment for alloys, which have shown a good agreement with the previous results, demonstrated broad capabilities of the approach. © 2005 The American Physical Society

    Magnetic anisotropy of Fe/Pt (001) and Pt/Fe/Pt (001) using a first-principles approach

    金沢大学理工研究域 数物科学系We investigated the magnetic anisotropy of an iron layer on a Pt(001) surface and some related systems by employing the local spin density approximation in a theoretical ab initio approach. We found that the surface system Pt/Fe/Pt (001) showed a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and its anisotropy energy per iron atom amounted to a value which is 2 times larger than the value of bulk FePt. The surface relaxation much enhances the anisotropy energies, related to a large attractive force between the iron and platinum layers. A remarkable cap effect-that the covering platinum layer changes anisotropy energy-was also found to exist. We investigated the microscopic origin of the perpendicular anisotropy in relation to the local densities of states of the Fe atom. These quantities were discussed as a fingerprint of magnetic anisotropy in comparison with the results of the Fe chain at the step edge on a vicinal surface Pt(664). The atomic orbital magnetic moments were enhanced at the respective surface atoms. © 2008 The American Physical Society

    Septic Pulmonary Embolism Induced by Dental Infection

    Dental infection can be an important source for septic pulmonary embolism (SPE), but only a few cases of SPE accompanying dental infection have been reported. The aim of this study was to characterize the clinical features of SPE induced by dental infection. Patients who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria described in the text were recruited in a retrospective fashion. All 9 patients were men, with a median age of 59 years (range:47 to 74 years). Eight patients had chest pain (88.9%), 5 had a preceding toothache (55.6%) and 3 had preceding gingival swelling (33.3%). Blood cultures obtained from 7 patients were negative. Periodontitis was found in all of the cases, periapical periodontitis in 5 cases, and gingival abscess in 3 cases. The median duration of hospitalization was 15 days, and symptoms were mild in some cases. In addition to antimicrobial therapy, tooth extraction was performed in 3 cases, tooth scaling in 6.     Scanning tunneling microscopy of Dy@C82 and Dy@C60 adsorbed on Si(111)-(7x7) surfaces

    Dy@C-82 and Dy@C-60 adsorbed on Si(111)-(7x7) surface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at 295 K. The Dy@C-82 molecules in the first layer are adsorbed on the Si(111)-(7x7) surface without formation of islands and nucleation, and the internal structure of the Dy@C-82 molecule is first observed on the surface at 295 K. The average heights of the Dy@C-82 molecules in the first and second layers are estimated to be 7.2 and 10.8 A, respectively, by STM. These results suggest strong interactions between the Si atoms and the Dy@C-82 molecules in the first layer. The STM image reveals that the Dy@C-60 molecule is nearly spherical, showing that the metal endohedral C-60 possesses a cage-form structure. </p

    Fabrication and characterization of field-effect transistor device with C<sub>2v</sub> isomer of Pr@C<sub>82</sub>

    A field-effect transistor (FET) device was fabricated with thin films of C2v isomer of Pr@C82. This device apparently showed n-channel normally-on type FET properties, where non-zero current was observed at gate-source voltage of 0 VGS, of 0V. Normally off FET properties were observed by subtraction of the non-zero current from the drain current.Thus the normally on properties are ascribed to the high bulk current caused by the small energy gap ≈0.3 eV. The field-effect mobility for this FET was 1.5 x 10-4 cm2 V-1 s-1 at 320 K, being comparable to those of other endohedral metallofullerene FET devices.</p

    A phase II study of amrubicin and topotecan combination therapy in patients with relapsed or extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer: Okayama Lung Cancer Study Group Trial 0401

    Backgrounds: Chemotherapy is a mainstay in the treatment of extensive-disease small-cell lung cancer (ED-SCLC), although the survival benefit remains modest. We conducted a phase II trial of amrubicin (a topoisomerase II inhibitor) and topotecan (a topoisomerase I inhibitor) in chemotherapy-naïve and relapsed SCLC patients. Methods: Amrubicin (35 mg/m(2)) and topotecan (0.75 mg/m(2)) were administered on days 3-5 and 1-5, respectively. The objective response rate (ORR) was set as the primary endpoint, which was assessed separately in chemotherapy-naïve and relapsed cases. Results: Fifty-nine patients were enrolled (chemotherapy-naïve 31, relapsed 28). The ORRs were 74% and 43% in the chemotherapy-naïve and relapsed cases, respectively. Survival data were also promising, with a median progression-free survival time and median survival time of 5.3 and 14.9 months and 4.7 and 10.2 months in the chemotherapy-naïve and relapsed cases, respectively. Even refractory-relapsed cases responded to the treatment favorably (27% ORR). The primary toxicity was myelosuppression with grades 3 or 4 neutropenia in 97% of the patients, which led to grades 3 or 4 febrile neutropenia in 41% of the patients and two toxic deaths. Conclusion: This phase II study showed the favorable efficacy and moderate safety profiles of a topotecan and amrubicin two-drug combination especially in relapsed patients with ED-SCLC
