Desensitization of delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice: suppressive environment

The systemic injection of high doses of antigen into a preimmunized animal results in transient unresponsiveness of cell-mediated immune responses. This phenomenon is known as desensitization. Serum interleukin 2 (IL-2) activity was found transiently in desensitized mice at 3 h after the antigen challenge. These mice could not reveal antigen nonspecific delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) 1 d after the challenge. Specific suppression of DTH was observed at later stages. Sera from 3 h desensitized mice showed suppressive effects on DTH in preo immunized mice. Administration of recombinant IL-2 into preimmunized mice led to the failure of development of DTH to antigens. These observations suggest that IL-2 plays an important role in the suppressive environment

Seventy-five dental patients between the ages of 65 and 94, who had previously been diagnosed as having cardiovascular diseases (CVD), were observed between January 1995 and August 1998. The visits were conducted either in the hospital or at home. There were a total of 477 patient-visits, and at each patient-visit, an ECG (lead II) was monitored for 5 minutes as part of a general health assessment before dental treatment. As a result, various arrhythmias were found. One patient was prescribed an antiarrhythmic drug because of ventricular bigeminy. Dental treatment was deferred for two patients because of multiple VPC or sinus tachycardia. In this study, we found that a potentially serious arrhythmia in patients with no history of arrhythmia, and routine pre-operative assessments including an ECG are recommended

Clarification of the normal developmental stages with regard to recumbent-position brushing is considered important for the purpose of giving appropriate guidance in teeth cleaning infants. In order to identify the ages at which children may accept recumbent-position brushing, we had a number of mothers perform recumbent-position brushing upon normal preschool children (ages 0-6 years), and observed the children\u27s behavior. 79 children (79.0%), classified as the adaptive group, were seen to have no negative reaction or behavior whatsoever to recumber-position brushing. However, 21 children (21.0%) composed an unadaptive group in which some rejective behavior was observed. As a result of analyses by AIC, the calender age which thus distinguishes the adaptive group from the unadaptive group was 2 years and 6 months. It was concluded that children 2 years and 6 months or older are adaptive to recumbent-position brushing while those less than 2 years and 6 months are unadaptive

A 31-year-old male with true hermaphroditism and a 46, XX karyotype who underwent gonadectomy and extirpation of the internal sex organs at the age of 4 had a large stone 4 cm in diameter in the residual male vagina. He complained of pain on micturition, hematuria, and rectal pressure. Urethroscopy and retrograde urethrography disclosed an ostium of the male vagina in the prostatic urethra, and an impacted intravaginal stone. Transurethral electrohydraulic lithotripsy was performed. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and transurethral lithotripsy were performed for the residual stones. All stones and fragments were spontaneously passed. The stone was composed of calcium phosphate and ammonium acid urate

We present a case of IgG4-related sclerosing disease complicated by sclerosing cholangitis (SC), idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF) and orbital pseudotumour (OPT). Clinical, radiographic and pathological findings later suggested that the patient had SC complicated by IRF. The patient’s SC and IRF were well controlled for the first 10 years of the follow-up period; OPT developed in the tenth year. During investigation of the OPT, serum IgG4 level was found to be significantly elevated. The patient was then diagnosed with IgG4-related sclerosing disease complicated by SC, IRF and OPT. This is a rare manifestation of IgG4-related sclerosing disease, which was diagnosed incidentally during OPT work-up. We suggest that this is a variation of the so-called IgG4-related sclerosing disease or hyper-IgG4 disease
