The Vector Analyzing Power in Elastic Electron-Nucleus Scattering

The vector analyzing power A_n is calculated for elastic electron scattering from a variety of spin zero nuclei at energies from 14 MeV to 3 GeV. Time reversal symmetry insures that A_n vanish in first Born approximation. Therefore A_n depends on Coulomb distortions and can be large for scattering from heavy nuclei. The vector analyzing power is a potential source of systematic error for parity violation experiments. We find that A_n=-0.361 ppm for the kinematics of the Parity Radius Experiment (PREX) involving 850 MeV electrons scattering at six degrees from 208Pb. This is comparable to the parity violating asymmetry. However for HAPPEX He involving 3 GeV electrons scattering on 4He we find that A_n is very small.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Black Strings and Classical Hair

We examine the geometry near the event horizon of a family of black string solutions with traveling waves. It has previously been shown that the metric is continuous there. Contrary to expectations, we find that the geometry is not smooth, and the horizon becomes singular whenever a wave is present. Both five dimensional and six dimensional black strings are considered with similar results.Comment: 14 pages, harvma

Neutrino Breakup of A=3 Nuclei in Supernovae

We extend the virial equation of state to include 3H and 3He nuclei, and predict significant mass-three fractions near the neutrinosphere in supernovae. While alpha particles are often more abundant, we demonstrate that energy transfer cross-sections for muon and tau neutrinos at low densities are dominated by breakup of the loosely-bound 3H and 3He nuclei. The virial coefficients involving A=3 nuclei are calculated directly from the corresponding nucleon-3H and nucleon-3He scattering phase shifts. For the neutral-current inelastic cross-sections and the energy transfer cross sections, we perform ab-initio calculations based on microscopic two- and three-nucleon interactions and meson-exchange currents.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, minor additions, to appear in Phys. Microstructures and properties of rapidly solidified alloys

    Get PDF
The microstructure and properties of rapidly solidified aluminum alloys were researched. The effects of powder and flake chemistry and morphology and alternative consolidation processing parameters are being conducted. Samples of the powders being utilized were obtained for comprehensive metallurgical characterization. Seven aluminum alloys in the form of thin foils were studied by a variety of techniques including optical metallography, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope. Details of the microstructural characteristics are presented along with a discussion of the solidification process. A better understanding of the microstructure of the rapidly solidified aluminum alloys prepared by a variety of techniques such as roller quenching, the vacuum atomized procedure, ultrasonically atomized in inert atmospheres, and atomized in flue gas was provided

Where is the Information Stored in Black Holes?

    Get PDF
It is shown that many modes of the gravitational field exist only inside the horizon of an extreme black hole in string theory. At least in certain cases, the number of such modes is sufficient to account for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. These modes are associated with sources which carry Ramond-Ramond charge, and so may be viewed as the strong coupling limit of D-branes. Although these sources naturally live at the singularity, they are well defined and generate modes which extend out to the horizon. This suggests that the information in an extreme black hole is not localized near the singularity or the horizon, but extends between them.Comment: 21 pages, reference corrected and comment adde

Extremal black holes as exact string solutions

We show that the leading order solution describing an extremal electrically charged black hole in string theory is, in fact, an exact solution to all orders in \a' when interpreted in a Kaluza-Klein fashion. This follows from the observation that it can be obtained via dimensional reduction from a five dimensional background which is proved to be an exact string solution.Comment: 13 pages, harvmac, Imperial/TP/93-94/51, UCSBTH-94-24 (references added

Strong Correlations in Actinide Redox Reactions

Reduction-oxidation (redox) reactions of the redox couples An(VI)/An(V), An(V)/An(IV), and An(IV)/An(III), where An is an element in the family of early actinides (U, Np, and Pu), as well as Am(VI)/Am(V) and Am(V)/Am(III), are modeled by combining density functional theory with a generalized Anderson impurity model that accounts for the strong correlations between the 5f electrons. Diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model yields improved estimates for the redox potentials and the propensity of the actinide complexes to disproportionate.Comment: 17 pages, 10 figure, 3 tables.
