Lipase inhibition attenuates the acute inhibitory effects of oral fat on food intake in healthy subjects
The lipase inhibitor, orlistat, is used in the treatment of obesity and reduces fat absorption by about 30%. However, the mean weight loss induced by orlistat is less than expected for the degree of fat malabsorption. It was hypothesised that lipase inhibition with orlistat attenuates the suppressive effects of oral fat on subsequent energy intake in normal-weight subjects. Fourteen healthy, lean subjects (nine males, five females; aged 25 +/- 1.3 years) were studied twice, in a double-blind fashion. The subjects received a high-fat yoghurt 'preload' (males 400 g (2562 kJ); females 300 g (1923 kJ)), containing orlistat (120 mg) on one study day (and no orlistat on the other 'control' day), 30 min before ad libitum access to food and drinks; energy intake was assessed during the following 8 h. Blood samples were taken at regular intervals for the measurement of plasma cholecystokinin (CCK). Each subject performed a 3 d faecal fat collection following each study. Energy intake during the day was greater following orlistat (10,220 (SEM 928) kJ) v. control (9405 (SEM 824) kJ) (P=0.02). On both days plasma CCK increased (P<0.05) after the preload. Plasma CCK 20 min following ingestion of the preload was less after orlistat (4.1 (SEM 0.9) pmol/l) v. control (5.3 (SEM 0.9) pmol/l (P=0.028); however there was no difference in the area under the curve 0-510 min between the two study days. Fat excretion was greater following orlistat (1017 (SEM 168) kJ) v. control (484 (SEM 90) kJ) (P=0.004). Correlation of hippocampal theta rhythm with changes in cutaneous temperature
A possible role for the hippocampus in alerting an animal to changes in cutaneous temperature was examined. Following local warming or cooling of the ears of unanesthetized, loosely restrained rabbits, theta waves (4-7 Hz EEG waves) were recorded from electrodes straddling the hippocampus. The onset of the hippocampal theta rhythm was correlated with changes in cutaneous temperature, an observation consistent with studies indicating that the theta rhythm is a nonspecific response evoked by stimulation of several sensory modalities. Additional data from cats and rabbits were correlated with specific neurons within the hippocampus, namely pyramidal cells. Post stimulus time histograms obtained by excitation of the dorsal fornix were interpreted in terms of excitatory and inhibitory inputs to pyramidal cells. Thus, the theta rhythm, which appears to be evoked by changes in cutaneous temperature, can be related to a specific type of hippocampal neuron which is in turn connected with other areas of the brain involved in temperature regulation
Black Strings and Classical Hair
We examine the geometry near the event horizon of a family of black string
solutions with traveling waves. It has previously been shown that the metric is
continuous there. Contrary to expectations, we find that the geometry is not
smooth, and the horizon becomes singular whenever a wave is present. Both five
dimensional and six dimensional black strings are considered with similar

Where is the Information Stored in Black Holes?
It is shown that many modes of the gravitational field exist only inside the
horizon of an extreme black hole in string theory. At least in certain cases,
the number of such modes is sufficient to account for the Bekenstein-Hawking
entropy. These modes are associated with sources which carry Ramond-Ramond
charge, and so may be viewed as the strong coupling limit of D-branes. Although
these sources naturally live at the singularity, they are well defined and
generate modes which extend out to the horizon. This suggests that the
information in an extreme black hole is not localized near the singularity or

Extremal black holes as exact string solutions
We show that the leading order solution describing an extremal electrically
charged black hole in string theory is, in fact, an exact solution to all
orders in \a' when interpreted in a Kaluza-Klein fashion. This follows from
the observation that it can be obtained via dimensional reduction from a five

Counting States of Black Strings with Traveling Waves
We consider a family of solutions to string theory which depend on arbitrary
functions and contain regular event horizons. They describe six dimensional
extremal black strings with traveling waves and have an inhomogeneous
distribution of momentum along the string. The structure of these solutions
near the horizon is studied and the horizon area computed. We also count the
number of BPS string states at weak coupling whose macroscopic momentum
distribution agrees with that of the black string. It is shown that the number
of such states is given by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black string

Designing optimal discrete-feedback thermodynamic engines
Feedback can be utilized to convert information into useful work, making it
an effective tool for increasing the performance of thermodynamic engines.
Using feedback reversibility as a guiding principle, we devise a method for
designing optimal feedback protocols for thermodynamic engines that extract all
the information gained during feedback as work. Our method is based on the
observation that in a feedback-reversible process the measurement and the
time-reversal of the ensuing protocol both prepare the system in the same
probabilistic state. We illustrate the utility of our method with two examples
