Relativistic Coulomb Sum Rules for
A Coulomb sum rule is derived for the response of nuclei to
scattering with large three-momentum transfers. Unlike the nonrelativistic
formulation, the relativistic Coulomb sum is restricted to spacelike
four-momenta for the most direct connection with experiments; an immediate
consequence is that excitations involving antinucleons, e.g., pair
production, are approximately eliminated from the sum rule. Relativistic recoil
and Fermi motion of target nucleons are correctly incorporated. The sum rule
decomposes into one- and two-body parts, with correlation information in the
second. The one-body part requires information on the nucleon momentum
distribution function, which is incorporated by a moment expansion method. The
sum rule given through the second moment (RCSR-II) is tested in the Fermi gas
model, and is shown to be sufficiently accurate for applications to data.Comment: 32 pages (LaTeX), 4 postscript figures available from the author
Energy Dependence of the NN t-matrix in the Optical Potential for Elastic Nucleon-Nucleus Scattering
The influence of the energy dependence of the free NN t-matrix on the optical
potential of nucleon-nucleus elastic scattering is investigated within the
context of a full-folding model based on the impulse approximation. The
treatment of the pole structure of the NN t-matrix, which has to be taken into
account when integrating to negative energies is described in detail. We
calculate proton-nucleus elastic scattering observables for O,
Ca, and Pb between 65 and 200 MeV laboratory energy and study
the effect of the energy dependence of the NN t-matrix. We compare this result
with experiment and with calculations where the center-of-mass energy of the NN
t-matrix is fixed at half the projectile energy. It is found that around 200
MeV the fixed energy approximation is a very good representation of the full
calculation, however deviations occur when going to lower energies (65 MeV).Comment: 11 pages (revtex), 6 postscript figure
A Space-Time Orbifold: A Toy Model for a Cosmological Singularity
We explore bosonic strings and Type II superstrings in the simplest time
dependent backgrounds, namely orbifolds of Minkowski space by time reversal and
some spatial reflections. We show that there are no negative norm physical
excitations. However, the contributions of negative norm virtual states to
quantum loops do not cancel, showing that a ghost-free gauge cannot be chosen.
The spectrum includes a twisted sector, with strings confined to a ``conical''
singularity which is localized in time. Since these localized strings are not
visible to asymptotic observers, interesting issues arise regarding unitarity
of the S-matrix for scattering of propagating states. The partition function of
our model is modular invariant, and for the superstring, the zero momentum
dilaton tadpole vanishes. Many of the issues we study will be generic to
time-dependent cosmological backgrounds with singularities localized in time,
and we derive some general lessons about quantizing strings on such spaces.Comment: 21 pages, 2 figure
Relativistic versus Nonrelativistic Optical Potentials in A(e,e'p)B Reactions
We investigate the role of relativistic and nonrelativistic optical
potentials used in the analysis of () data. We find that the
relativistic calculations produce smaller () cross sections even in the
case in which both relativistic and nonrelativistic optical potentials fit
equally well the elastic proton--nucleus scattering data. Compared to the
nonrelativistic impulse approximation, this effect is due to a depletion in the
nuclear interior of the relativistic nucleon current, which should be taken
into account in the nonrelativistic treatment by a proper redefinition of the
effective current operator.Comment: Added one new figure, the formalism section has been enlarged and the

Thermodynamics of doubly charged CGHS model and D1-D5-KK black holes of IIB supergravity
We study the doubly charged Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) model,
which has black hole solutions that were found to be U-dual to the D1-D5-KK
black holes of the IIB supergravity. We derive the action of the model via a
spontaneous compactification on S^3 of the IIB supergravity on S^1*T^4 and
obtain the general static solutions including black holes corresponding to
certain non-asymptotically flat black holes in the IIB supergravity.
Thermodynamics of them is established by computing the entropy, temperature,
chemical potentials, and mass in the two-dimensional setup, and the first law
of thermodynamics is explicitly verified. The entropy is in precise agreement
with that of the D1-D5-KK black holes, and the mass turns out to be consistent
with the infinite Lorentz boost along the M theory circle that is a part of the
aforementioned U-dual chain.Comment: 21 pages, Revte
Open strings in relativistic ion traps
Electromagnetic plane waves provide examples of time-dependent open string
backgrounds free of corrections. The solvable case of open strings in
a quadrupolar wave front, analogous to pp-waves for closed strings, is
discussed. In light-cone gauge, it leads to non-conformal boundary conditions
similar to those induced by tachyon condensates. A maximum electric gradient is
found, at which macroscopic strings with vanishing tension are pair-produced --
a non-relativistic analogue of the Born-Infeld critical electric field. Kinetic
instabilities of quadrupolar electric fields are cured by standard atomic
physics techniques, and do not interfere with the former dynamic instability. A
new example of non-conformal open-closed duality is found. Propagation of open
strings in time-dependent wave fronts is discussed.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figures, Latex2e, JHEP3.cls style; v2: one-loop

Organic film thickness influence on the bias stress instability in Sexithiophene Field Effect Transistors
In this paper, the dynamics of bias stress phenomenon in Sexithiophene (T6)
Field Effect Transistors (FETs) has been investigated. T6 FETs have been
fabricated by vacuum depositing films with thickness from 10 nm to 130 nm on
Si/SiO2 substrates. After the T6 film structural analysis by X-Ray diffraction
and the FET electrical investigation focused on carrier mobility evaluation,
bias stress instability parameters have been estimated and discussed in the
context of existing models. By increasing the film thickness, a clear
correlation between the stress parameters and the structural properties of the
organic layer has been highlighted. Conversely, the mobility values result
almost thickness independent
Cosmological Perturbations in a Big Crunch/Big Bang Space-time
A prescription is developed for matching general relativistic perturbations
across singularities of the type encountered in the ekpyrotic and cyclic
scenarios i.e. a collision between orbifold planes. We show that there exists a
gauge in which the evolution of perturbations is locally identical to that in a
model space-time (compactified Milne mod Z_2) where the matching of modes
across the singularity can be treated using a prescription previously
introduced by two of us. Using this approach, we show that long wavelength,
scale-invariant, growing-mode perturbations in the incoming state pass through
the collision and become scale-invariant growing-mode perturbations in the
expanding hot big bang phase.Comment: 47 pages, 4 figure
Exactly solvable model of superstring in Ramond-Ramond plane wave background
We describe in detail the solution of type IIB superstring theory in the
maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background with constant null Ramond-Ramond
5-form field strength. The corresponding light-cone Green-Schwarz action found
in hep-th/0112044 is quadratic in both bosonic and fermionic coordinates. We
find the spectrum of the light-cone Hamiltonian and the string representation
of the supersymmetry algebra. The superstring Hamiltonian has a
``harmonic-oscillator'' form in both the string-oscillator and the zero-mode
parts and thus has discrete spectrum in all 8 transverse directions. We analyze
the structure of the zero-mode sector of the theory, establishing the precise
correspondence between the lowest-lying ``massless'' string states and the type
IIB supergravity fluctuation modes in the plane-wave background. The zero-mode
spectrum has certain similarity to the supergravity spectrum in AdS_5 x S^5 of
which the plane-wave background is a special limit. We also compare the
plane-wave string spectrum with expected form of the light-cone gauge spectrum
of superstring in AdS_5 x S^5.Comment: 33 pages, latex. v4: minor sign corrections in (1.5) and (3.62), to
