    Search for Hidden photons with Sumico

    We searched for solar hidden photons in the visible photon energy range using a hidden photon detector add-on attached to Sumico. It consists of a parabolic mirror of dia. 0.5m and f=1m installed in a vacuum chamber, and a low noise photomultiplier tube at the focal point. No evidence for the existence of hidden photons was found in the latest measurement giving a new limit on the photon-hidden photon mixing parameter in the hidden photon mass range 0.001-1eV.Comment: 6 pages.     Strong valence fluctuation in the quantum critical heavy fermion superconductor beta-YbAlB4: A hard x-ray photoemission study

    Electronic structures of the quantum critical superconductor beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 are investigated by using bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. From the Yb 3d core level spectra, the values of the Yb valence are estimated to be ~2.73 and ~2.75 for alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, respectively, thus providing clear evidence for valence fluctuations. The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy fermion systems, calling for a novel scheme for a quantum critical model beyond the conventional Doniach picture in beta-YbAlB4.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revised version accepted for publication in PR

    Measurement of K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma decay using stopped kaons

    The K^+ \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \nu \gamma (Kμ3γK_{\mu 3 \gamma}) decay has been measured with stopped positive kaons at the KEK 12 GeV proton synchrotron. A Kμ3γK_{\mu 3 \gamma} sample containing 125 events was obtained. The partial branching ratio Br(Kμ3γ,Eγ>30MeV,θμ+γ>20∘)Br(K_{\mu 3 \gamma}, E_{\gamma}>30 {\rm MeV}, \theta_{\mu^+ \gamma}>20^{\circ}) was found to be [2.4±0.5(stat)±0.6(syst)]×10−5[2.4 \pm 0.5(stat) \pm 0.6(syst)]\times 10^{-5}, which is in good agreement with theoretical predictions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Physics Letters

    Measurement of direct photon emission in K+→π+π0γK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma decay using stopped positive kaons

    The radiative decay K+→π+π0γK^+ \to \pi^+ \pi^0 \gamma (Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma}) has been measured with stopped positive kaons. A Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma} sample containing 4k events was analyzed, and the Kπ2γK_{\pi 2 \gamma} branching ratio of the direct photon emission process was determined to be [6.1±2.5(stat)±1.9(syst)]×10−6[6.1\pm2.5({\rm stat})\pm1.9({\rm syst})]\times 10^{-6}. No interference pattern with internal bremsstrahlung was observed.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, to be published in Phys. Lett.

    Giant pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma with hemangioma mimicking intestinal obstruction

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pedunculated hepatocellular carcinoma (P-HCC) has rarely been reported and is characteristically large and encapsulated. Only sporadic cases have been published, in which P-HCC was combined with other liver tumors (mostly benign), making the diagnosis difficult.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report a patient who was admitted to our hospital with clinical features of intestinal obstruction and a palpable mass in the right iliac fossa. Ultrasound, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an encapsulated mass of unclear origin and characteristics of liver hemangioma. Laboratory tests revealed elevated α-fetoprotein (> 800 ng/ml) and cancer antigen 125 (> 51.2 U/ml). With a possible diagnosis of giant liver hemangioma, we proceeded to surgery. During surgery, a giant pedunculated tumor was discovered on the inferior surface of the right lobe of the liver, hanging free in the right abdominal cavity towards the right iliac fossa. The macroscopic appearance of the tumor was compatible with liver hemangioma. Tumor resection was performed at a safe distance, including the pedicle. The rest of the liver appeared normal. Histopathological examination revealed grade II and III HCC (according to Edmondson-Steiner's classification) with nodular configuration, central necrosis, and infiltration of the capsule. Underneath the tumor capsule, residual tissue of a cavernous hemangioma was recognized. The resection margins were free of neoplastic tissue.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This rare presentation of a giant P-HCC combined with a hemangioma with features of intestinal obstruction confirmed the diagnostic difficulties of similar cases, and required prompt surgical treatment. Therefore, patients benefit from surgical resection because both the capsule and the pedicle prevent vascular invasion, therefore improving prognosis.</p

    Determination of the local structure of Sr2−x_{2-x}Mx_xIrO4_4 (M = K, La) as a function of doping and temperature

    The local structure of correlated spin-orbit insulator Sr2−x_{2-x}Mx_xIrO4_4 (M = K, La) has been investigated by Ir L3_3-edge extended x-ray absorption fine structure measurements. The measurements were performed as a function of temperature for different dopings induced by substitution of Sr with La or K. It is found that Ir-O bonds have strong covalency and they hardly show any change across the N\'eel temperature. In the studied doping range, neither Ir-O bonds nor their dynamics, measured by their mean square relative displacements, show any appreciable change upon carrier doping, indicating possibility of a nanoscale phase separation in the doped system. On the other hand, there is a large increase of the static disorder in Ir-Sr correlation, larger for K doping than La doping. Similarities and differences with respect to the local lattice displacements in cuprates are briefly discussed.Comment: Main text: 6 pages, 4 figures, Supplemental information: 2 pages, 2 figure

    On the ionospheric perturbation associated with the 2007 Niigata Chuetsu-oki earthquake, as seen from subionospheric VLF/LF network observations

    International audienceIn order to investigate any precursory effect of ionospheric perturbations associated with the large 2007 Niigata Chuetsu-oki earthquake (16 July 2007) (magnitude, 6.8), we have made full use of our VLF/LF network observation in Japan by examing the four propagation paths; JJI transmitter (Kyusyu, Ebino)-MSR (Moshiri, Hokkaido), JJY transmitter (Fukushima)-MSR, JJY-KOC (Kochi) and JJI-CBA (Tateyama, Chiba). For the former two paths of JJI-MSR and JJY-MSR, we have observed significant propagation anomalies (both a decrease in nighttime average amplitude and an enhancement in nighttime amplitude fluctuation both satisfying the 2? (?: standard deviation) criteria) on 8?9 July, about one week before the earthquake. However, the lack of observation for the path from JJY-KOC, has enabled us to make no conclusion for this path. On the other hand, the path from JJI-CBA does not seem to be perturbed. Although this earthquake is very big and shallow, the amount of VLF anomaly for this earthquake is not so pronounced as expected, probably because the epicenter is not unfortunately located within the sensitive areas of any propagation paths. These observational facts suggest that the lower ionosphere above the epicenter is perturbed definitely prior to the earthquake, with radius of a few hundred kilometers
