    Survey on Flight Control Technology for Large-Scale Helicopter

    A literature review of flight control technology is presented for large-scale helicopter. Challenges of large-scale helicopter flight control system (FCS) design are illustrated. Following this, various flight control methodologies are described with respect to their engineering implementation and theoretical developments, whose advantages and disadvantages are also analyzed. Then, the challenging research issues on flight control technology are identified, and future directions are highlighted

    The impact of farm size on agricultural sustainability

    Farm size plays a critical role in agricultural sustainability. This may have far-reaching consequences for the economic and environmental performance of agricultural production, resulting, for instance, in an excessive use of mineral fertilizers. However, the magnitude of such effects and their main causes are not well understood, while being essential for effective policy development, especially for countries like China where the agricultural sector is still largely dominated by smallholder farms. In this paper, we review the current understanding of how farm size affects agricultural sustainability using China's crop farming as an example from economic, environment and social aspects. We analyze impacts from both a Chinese and a global perspective to identify intervention points to improve agricultural performance. We found that increasing farm size has a positive impact on farmer’s net profit, as well as economic, technical and labor efficiency with mean coefficients 0.005, 0.02 and 2.25 in economic performance, respectively. Nevertheless, the relationships between farm size and overall productivity, total factor productivity and allocative efficiency are still not well understood and therefore require more research. Meanwhile, increase in farm size is associated with statistically significant decrease in fertilizer and pesticide use per hectare, showing clear benefits for environmental protection. In line with the experiences documented for the evolution of agricultural practices in developed countries, the expansion of large-scale farming is a critical path for modernizing agricultural production and ensuring sustainable food production from the social perspective. Measures concerning farm size should be implemented in an interaction between farmers and the government to promote the green development of agriculture

    Effects of Crofton weed Ageratina adenophora on assemblages of Carabidae (Coleoptera) in the Yunnan Province, South China

    Abstract Crofton weed (Ageratina adenophora) is a highly invasive weed that has spread into several provinces of southern China. This study compares carabid assemblages originating from native pastures with assemblages in Crofton weed dominated communities in the Lancang County, Yunnan Province, to assess how the invasion of this neophyte impacts the community structure of ground-dwelling arthropods. Over a period of 16 months, a total of 1574 carabid beetles representing 28 species were collected at two types of pasture, and 679 carabid beetles representing 34 species at stands of Crofton weed. The most common carabid species, Tetragonoderus arcuatus and Harpalus indicus, were mostly found in the pastures, while four of the five rarest species were present exclusively under Crofton weed. Alpha-diversity and evenness of carabid assemblages were greater under Crofton weed. Three distinct groups of carabid species were separated according to indicator values and a characterization of habitats: habitat generalists, Crofton weed specialists and native pasture specialists. The distribution of carabid species was related to environmental parameters such as depth of litter layer, total phosphorus, height of vegetation, amount of fresh biomass and pH of the soil. According to this study, the invasion of Crofton weed will alter the structure of carabid communities, but will not necessarily reduce the alpha-diversity of carabid assemblages.

    Detection and attribution of nitrogen runoff trend in China's croplands

    Reliable detection and attribution of changes in nitrogen (N) runoff from croplands are essential for designing efficient, sustainable N management strategies for future. Despite the recognition that excess N runoff poses a risk of aquatic eutrophication, large-scale, spatially detailed N runoff trends and their drivers remain poorly understood in China. Based on data comprising 535 site-years from 100 sites across China's croplands, we developed a data-driven upscaling model and a new simplified attribution approach to detect and attribute N runoff trends during the period of 1990–2012. Our results show that N runoff has increased by 46% for rice paddy fields and 31% for upland areas since 1990. However, we acknowledge that the upscaling model is subject to large uncertainties (20% and 40% as coefficient of variation of N runoff, respectively). At national scale, increased fertilizer application was identified as the most likely driver of the N runoff trend, while decreased irrigation levels offset to some extent the impact of fertilization increases. In southern China, the increasing trend of upland N runoff can be attributed to the growth in N runoff rates. Our results suggested that increased SOM led to the N runoff rate growth for uplands, but led to a decline for rice paddy fields. In combination, these results imply that improving management approaches for both N fertilizer use and irrigation is urgently required for mitigating agricultural N runoff in China

    A single nucleotide mutation in Nppc is associated with a long bone abnormality in lbab mice

    BACKGROUND: The long bone abnormality (lbab) mouse is a new autosomal recessive mutant characterized by overall smaller body size with proportionate dwarfing of all organs and shorter long bones. Previous linkage analysis has located the lbab mutation on chromosome 1 between the markers D1Mit9 and D1Mit488. RESULTS: A genome-based positional approach was used to identify a mutation associated with lbab disease. A total of 122 genes and expressed sequence tags at the lbab region were screened for possible mutation by using genomic DNA from lbabl/lbab, lbab/+, and +/+ B6 mice and high throughput temperature gradient capillary electrophoresis. A sequence difference was identified in one of the amplicons of gene Nppc between lbab/lbab and +/+ mice. One-step reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction was performed to validate the difference of Nppc in different types of mice at the mRNA level. The mutation of Nppc was unique in lbab/lbab mice among multiple mouse inbred strains. The mutation of Nppc is co-segregated with lbab disease in 200 progenies produced from heterozygous lbab/+ parents. CONCLUSION: A single nucleotide mutation of Nppc is associated with dwarfism in lbab/lbab mice. Current genome information and technology allow us to efficiently identify single nucleotide mutations from roughly mapped disease loci. The lbab mouse is a useful model for hereditary human achondroplasia

    Frontolimbic neural circuitry at 6 months predicts individual differences in joint attention at 9 months

    Elucidating the neural basis of joint attention in infancy promises to yield important insights into the development of language and social cognition, and directly informs developmental models of autism. We describe a new method for evaluating responding to joint attention performance in infancy that highlights the 9- to 10-month period as a time interval of maximal individual differences. We then demonstrate that fractional anisotropy in the right uncinate fasciculus, a white matter fiber bundle connecting the amygdala to the ventral-medial prefrontal cortex and anterior temporal pole, measured in 6-month-olds predicts individual differences in responding to joint attention at 9 months of age. The white matter microstructure of the right uncinate was not related to receptive language ability at 9 months. These findings suggest that the development of core nonverbal social communication skills in infancy is largely supported by preceding developments within right lateralized frontotemporal brain systems

    Altered fronto–limbic activity in children and adolescents with familial high risk for schizophrenia

    Early symptoms of schizophrenia tend to emerge during adolescence, which is a critical period for development of executive and emotional processing. While individuals with familial high risk (FHR) for schizophrenia may show cognitive and emotional changes, the neural mechanisms underlying the development of these changes remain unclear. The goal of this study was to identify functional differences in fronto-striato-limbic regions in children with FHR. Functional MRI data was collected from 21 children with a first-degree family member with schizophrenia and 21 controls without FHR. Participants performed an emotional oddball task requiring both selective attention and suppression of task-irrelevant emotional information. During selective attention, the group with FHR showed enhanced activation in inferior frontal gyrus and caudate, with decreases in middle frontal gyrus and insular activation. The FHR group also showed greater age-related recruitment of anterior cingulate, temporal and occipital cortical areas during selective attention. During emotional processing, the FHR group showed decreased anterior cingulate activation, with decreased age-related recruitment of inferior frontal, parietal and occipital areas. The results suggest that FHR for schizophrenia may be associated with abnormal hyperactivation and hypoactivation of the neural circuitry engaged during executive and emotional processing and with age-related changes in neural recruitment during adolescence

    Differences in subcortical structures in young adolescents at familial risk for schizophrenia: A preliminary study

    Schizophrenia has been associated with reduced volumes of subcortical structures on MRI, but the relation of these reductions to familial risk for the disorder is unclear. We investigated the effect of familial risk for schizophrenia on regional subcortical volumes during adolescence, a period marked by steep maturational changes in brain structure and the emergence of psychotic symptoms. A group of 26 non-help-seeking, first-degree relatives of patients with schizophrenia and 43 matched healthy comparisons, between 9 and 18 years of age, underwent MRI scanning and were rated for the presence of prodromal symptoms. Five subcortical regions-of-interest were tested for group differences and group by age interactions, as well as correlations with low-level prodromal symptoms in the familial risk group. Relative to comparisons, familial risk subjects demonstrated greater positive volume-age relationships in hippocampus, putamen, and globus pallidus. These results suggest that relatives of individuals with schizophrenia exhibit structural abnormalities in the subcortex as early as pre-adolescence, which may reflect altered neurodevelopment of these regions
