    Differential effects of source-specific particulate matter on emergency hospitalizations for ischemic heart disease in Hong Kong

    Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is a major public health concern. Although many epidemiologic studies have reported evidence of adverse effects of particulate matter (PM) mass on IHD, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding the potential impacts of different PM sources. Much the same as PM size, PM sources may influence toxicological characteristics. Objectives: We identified contributing sources to PM10 mass and estimated the acute effects of PM10 sources on daily emergency IHD hospitalizations in Hong Kong. Methods: We analyzed the concentration data of 19 PM10 chemical components measured between 2001 and 2007 by positive matrix factorization to apportion PM10 mass, and used generalized additive models to estimate associations of interquartile range (IQR) increases in PM10 exposures with IHD hospitalization for different lag periods (up to 5 days), adjusted for potential confounders. Results: We identified 8 PM10 sources: vehicle exhaust, soil/road dust, regional combustion, residual oil, fresh sea salt, aged sea salt, secondary nitrate, and secondary sulfate. Vehicle exhaust, secondary nitrate, and secondary sulfate contributed more than half of the PM10 mass. Although associations with IQR increases in 2-day moving averages (lag01) were statistically significant for most sources based on single-source models, only PM10 from vehicle exhaust [1.87% (95% CI: 0.66, 3.10); IQR = 4.9 μg/m3], secondary nitrate [2.28% (95% CI: 1.15, 3.42); IQR = 8.6 μg/m3], and aged sea salt [1.19% (95% CI: 0.04, 2.36); IQR = 5.9 μg/m3] were significantly associated with IHD hospitalizations in the multisource model. Analysis using chemical components provided similar findings. Conclusion: Emergency IHD hospitalization was significantly linked with PM10 from vehicle exhaust, nitrate-rich secondary PM, and sea salt-related PM. Findings may help prioritize toxicological research and guide future monitoring and emission-control polices.published_or_final_versio

    Giant panda BAC library construction and assembly of a 650-kb contig spanning major histocompatibility complex class II region

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Giant panda is rare and endangered species endemic to China. The low rates of reproductive success and infectious disease resistance have severely hampered the development of captive and wild populations of the giant panda. The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays important roles in immune response and reproductive system such as mate choice and mother-fetus bio-compatibility. It is thus essential to understand genetic details of the giant panda MHC. Construction of a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library will provide a new tool for panda genome physical mapping and thus facilitate understanding of panda MHC genes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A giant panda BAC library consisting of 205,800 clones has been constructed. The average insert size was calculated to be 97 kb based on the examination of 174 randomly selected clones, indicating that the giant panda library contained 6.8-fold genome equivalents. Screening of the library with 16 giant panda PCR primer pairs revealed 6.4 positive clones per locus, in good agreement with an expected 6.8-fold genomic coverage of the library. Based on this BAC library, we constructed a contig map of the giant panda MHC class II region from <it>BTNL2 </it>to <it>DAXX </it>spanning about 650 kb by a three-step method: (1) PCR-based screening of the BAC library with primers from homologous MHC class II gene loci, end sequences and BAC clone shotgun sequences, (2) DNA sequencing validation of positive clones, and (3) restriction digest fingerprinting verification of inter-clone overlapping.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The identifications of genes and genomic regions of interest are greatly favored by the availability of this giant panda BAC library. The giant panda BAC library thus provides a useful platform for physical mapping, genome sequencing or complex analysis of targeted genomic regions. The 650 kb sequence-ready BAC contig map of the giant panda MHC class II region from <it>BTNL2 </it>to <it>DAXX</it>, verified by the three-step method, offers a powerful tool for further studies on the giant panda MHC class II genes.</p

    Corrections to electroweak precision observables from mixings of an exotic vector boson in light of the CDF WW-mass anomaly

    We enumerate various effective couplings that contribute to the mixings between an exotic vector boson ZZ^{\prime} and the neutral electroweak vector bosons. The miscellaneous mixing patterns can be evaluated perturbatively. The effective oblique parameters SS^{\prime}, TT^{\prime}, and UU^{\prime} are calculated to compare with the electroweak precision test results. With the contributions to the non-negligible UU^{\prime} parameter from the ϵB,W\epsilon_{B,W} parameters and the aid of some other parameters to cancel the negative TT^{\prime}, the recent CDF WW-mass anomaly can therefore be explained.Comment: S, T, U parameters are changed to the effective S', T', U'.     On the Abundance of Potassium in Metal-Poor Stars

    Based on extensive statistical-equilibrium calculations, we performed a non-LTE analysis of the K {\sc i} 7699 equivalent-width data of metal-deficient stars for the purpose of clarifying the behavior of the photospheric potassium abundance in disk/halo stars. While the resulting non-LTE abundance corrections turned out to be considerably large, amounting to 0.2--0.7 dex, their effect on the [K/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relation is not very important, since these corrections do not show any significant metallicity dependence. Hence, we again confirmed the results of previous LTE studies, that [K/Fe] shows a gradual systematic increase toward a lowered metallicity up to [K/Fe] \sim 0.3--0.5 at [Fe/H] \sim -1 to -2, such as in the case of α\alpha elements.Comment: 16 pages (including 2 tables and 4 figures), to appear in PASJ, Vol.54, No.2 (using the style file pasj00.cls
