Effects of selective dilution on the magnetic properties of La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}M'_xO_3 (M' = Al, Ti)

The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_{3} is selectively diluted by partial substitution of Al or Ti for Mn. The ferromagnetic transition temperature TcT_\mathrm{c} and the saturation magnetization MsM_\mathrm{s} both decrease with substitution. By presenting the data in terms of selective dilution, TcT_\mathrm{c} in the low-doping region is found to follow the relation Tc=Tc0(1−np)T_\mathrm{c}=T_\mathrm{c0}(1-n_\mathrm{p}), where Tc0T_\mathrm{c0} refers to the undiluted system and npn_\mathrm{p} is the dilution concentration defined as np=x/0.7n_\mathrm{p}=x/0.7 or np=x/0.3n_\mathrm{p}=x/0.3 for M′=M^\prime= Al or Ti, respectively. The scaling behavior of Tc(np)T_\mathrm{c}(n_\mathrm{p}) can be analyzed in the framework of the molecular-field theory and still valid when Mn is substituted by both Al and Ti. The results are discussed with respect to the contributions from ferromagnetic double exchange and other possible antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions coexisting in the material.Comment: Revtex4, 4 pages, 4 figures, 2006 Halong Conference Repor

Hybrid Chaplygin gas and phantom divide crossing

Hybrid Chaplygin gas model is put forward, in which the gases play the role of dark energy. For this model the coincidence problem is greatly alleviated. The effective equation of state of the dark energy may cross the phantom divide w=−1w=-1. Furthermore, the crossing behaviour is decoupled from any gravity theories. In the present model, w<−1w<-1 is only a transient behaviour. There is a de Sitter attractor in the future infinity. Hence, the big rip singularity, which often afflicts the models with matter whose effective equation of state less than -1, is naturally disappear. There exist stable scaling solutions, both at the early universe and the late universe. We discuss the perturbation growth of this model. We find that the index is consistent with observations.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, V3: discussions on the perturbation growth added, V4: minor corrections, to match the published versio

High Density Effective Theory Confronts the Fermi Liquid

The high density effective theory recently introduced by Hong and Hsu to describe ultradense relativistic fermionic matter is used to calculate the tree-level forward scattering amplitude between two particles at the Fermi surface. While the direct term correctly reproduces that of the underlying gauge theory, the exchange term has the wrong sign. The physical consequences are discussed in the context of Landau's theoretical description of the Fermi liquid.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; conclusion expanded, reference adde

Selective dilution and magnetic properties of La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Mn_{1-x}M'_xO_3 (M' = Al, Ti)

The magnetic lattice of mixed-valence Mn ions in La0.7_{0.7}Sr0.3_{0.3}MnO3_3 is selectively diluted by partial substitution of Mn by Al or Ti. The ferromagnetic transition temperature and the saturation moment decreases with substitution in both series. The volume fraction of the non-ferromagnetic phases evolves non-linearly with the substitution concentration and faster than theoretically expected. By presenting the data in terms of selective dilutions, the reduction of TcT_\mathrm{c} is found to be scaled by the relative ionic concentrations and is consistent with a prediction derived from molecular-field theory.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, REVTex4.0. Chiral symmetry breaking in a uniform external magnetic field II. Symmetry restoration at high temperatures and chemical potentials

Chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in quenched, ladder QED at weak gauge couplings when an external magnetic field is present. In this paper, we show that chiral symmetry is restored above a critical chemical potential and the corresponding phase transition is of first order. In contrast, the chiral symmetry restoration at high temperatures (and at zero chemical potential) is a second order phase transition.Comment: Latex; 12 pages; 8 postscript figures include

Dynamics of the two-dimensional S=1/2 dimer system (C5H6N2F)2CuCl4

Inelastic neutron scattering was used to study a quantum S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg system-Bis(2-amino-5-fluoropyridinium) Tetrachlorocuprate(II). The magnetic excitation spectrum was shown to be dominated by long-lived excitations with an energy gap as 1.07(3) meV. The measured dispersion relation is consistent with a simple two-dimensional square lattice of weakly-coupled spin dimers. Comparing the data to a random phase approximation treatment of this model gives the intra-dimer and inter-dimer exchange constants J=1.45(2) meV and J'=0.31(3) meV, respectively.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Collider Signature of Bulk Neutrinos in Large Extra Dimensions

We consider the collider signature of right-handed neutrinos propagating in δ\delta (large) extra dimensions, and interacting with Standard Model fields only through a Yukawa coupling to the left-handed neutrino and the Higgs boson. These theories are attractive as they can explain the smallness of the neutrino mass, as has already been shown. We show that if δ\delta is bigger than two, it can result in an enhancement in the production rate of the Higgs boson, decaying either invisibly or to a bb anti-bb quark pair, associated with an isolated high pTp_T charged lepton and missing transverse energy at future hadron colliders, such as the LHC. The enhancement is due to the large number of Kaluza-Klein neutrinos produced in the final state. The observation of the signal event would provide an opportunity to distinguish between the normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies, and to determine the absolute scale of neutrino masses by measuring the asymmetry of the observed event numbers in the electron and muon channels.Comment: 31 pages, 13 figures. v2: Added discussion on PDF uncertainties, added reference
