    Detecting the intermediate-mass Higgs boson through the associate production channel pp --> t + anti-t + H + X

    We examine the detection of the intermediate-mass Higgs boson (IMH) at LHC through the associate production channel pp-->t+(anti-t)+H+X-->l+photon+ photon+X'. It is shown that by applying kinematic cuts or b-tagging on the final state jets, the main backgrounds of W(-->l+nu)+photon+photon+(n-jet) can be reduced substantially without significant loss of signals. It is possible to detect the Higgs boson at LHC through the pp-->t+(anti-t)+H+X channel using a modest photon detector with mass resolution of about 3% of the photon pair invariant mass.Comment: 10 pages, standard LaTex fil

    Vertex functions for d-wave mesons in the light-front approach

    While the light-front quark model (LFQM) is employed to calculate hadronic transition matrix elements, the vertex functions must be pre-determined. In this work we derive the vertex functions for all d-wave states in this model. Especially, since both of 3D1^3D_1 and 3S1^3S_1 are 11^{--} mesons, the Lorentz structures of their vertex functions are the same. Thus when one needs to study the processes where 3D1^3D_1 is involved, all the corresponding formulas for 3S1^3S_1 states can be directly applied, only the coefficient of the vertex function should be replaced by that for 3D1^3D_1. The results would be useful for studying the newly observed resonances which are supposed to be d-wave mesons and furthermore the possible 2S-1D mixing in ψ\psi' with the LFQM.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, some typos corrected and more discussions added.     Thorn-like TiO2 nanoarrays with broad spectrum antimicrobial activity through physical puncture and photocatalytic action

    To overcome the conventional limitation of TiO2 disinfection being ineffective under light-free conditions, TiO2 nanowire films (TNWs) were prepared and applied to bacterial disinfection under dark and UV illumination. TNW exhibited much higher antibacterial efficiencies against Escherichia coli (E. coli) under dark and UV illumination conditions compared to TiO2 nanoparticle film (TNP) which was almost inactive in the dark, highlighting the additional contribution of the physical interaction between bacterial membrane and NWs. Such a physical contact-based antibacterial activity was related to the NW geometry such as diameter, length, and density. The combined role of physical puncture and photocatalytic action in the mechanism underlying higher bactericidal effect of TNW was systematically examined by TEM, SEM, FTIR, XPS, and potassium ion release analyses. Moreover, TNW revealed antimicrobial activities in a broad spectrum of microorganisms including Staphylococcus aureus and MS2 bacteriophage, antibiofilm properties, and good material stability. Overall, we expect that the free-standing and antimicrobial TNW is a promising agent for water disinfection and biomedical applications in the dark and/or UV illumination.11Ysciescopu

    Regulation of TMPRSS6 by BMP6 and iron in human cells and mice.

    Mutations in transmembrane protease, serine 6 (TMPRSS6), encoding matriptase-2, are responsible for the familial anemia disorder iron-refractory iron deficiency anemia (IRIDA). Patients with IRIDA have inappropriately elevated levels of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin, suggesting that TMPRSS6 is involved in negatively regulating hepcidin expression. Hepcidin is positively regulated by iron via the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-SMAD signaling pathway. In this study, we investigated whether BMP6 and iron also regulate TMPRSS6 expression. Here we demonstrate that, in vitro, treatment with BMP6 stimulates TMPRSS6 expression at the mRNA and protein levels and leads to an increase in matriptase-2 activity. Moreover, we identify that inhibitor of DNA binding 1 is the key element of the BMP-SMAD pathway to regulate TMPRSS6 expression in response to BMP6 treatment. Finally, we show that, in mice, Tmprss6 mRNA expression is stimulated by chronic iron treatment or BMP6 injection and is blocked by injection of neutralizing antibody against BMP6. Our results indicate that BMP6 and iron not only induce hepcidin expression but also induce TMPRSS6, a negative regulator of hepcidin expression. Modulation of TMPRSS6 expression could serve as a negative feedback inhibitor to avoid excessive hepcidin increases by iron to help maintain tight homeostatic balance of systemic iron levels

    Well-Posedness of Nematic Liquid Crystal Flow in Luloc3(R3)L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}(\R^3)

    In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the simplified version of hydrodynamic flow of nematic liquid crystals (\ref{LLF}) in R3\mathbb R^3 for any initial data (u0,d0)(u_0,d_0) having small Luloc3L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}-norm of (u0,d0)(u_0,\nabla d_0). Here Luloc3(R3)L^3_{\hbox{uloc}}(\mathbb R^3) is the space of uniformly locally L3L^3-integrable functions. For any initial data (u0,d0)(u_0, d_0) with small (u0,d0)L3(R3)\displaystyle |(u_0,\nabla d_0)|_{L^3(\mathbb R^3)}, we show that there exists a unique, global solution to (\ref{LLF}) which is smooth for t>0t>0 and has monotone deceasing L3L^3-energy for t0t\ge 0.Comment: 29 page

    Modification of argon impurity transport by electron cyclotron heating in KSTAR H-mode plasmas

    Experiments with a small amount of Ar gas injection as a trace impurity were conducted in the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) H-mode plasma (BT  = 2.8 T, IP = 0.6 MA, and PNBI = 4.0 MW). 170 GHz electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECH) at 600 and 800 kW was focused along the mid-plane with a fixed major radial position of R  =  1.66 m. The emissivity of the Ar16+ (3.949 Å) and Ar15+ (353.860 Å) spectral lines were measured by x-ray imaging crystal spectroscopy (XICS) and a vacuum UV (VUV) spectrometer, respectively. ECH reduces the peak Ar15+ emission and increases the Ar16+ emission, an effect largest with 800 kW. The ADAS-SANCO impurity transport code was used to evaluate the Ar transport coefficients. It was found that the inward convective velocity found in the plasma core without ECH was decreased with ECH, while diffusion remained approximately constant resulting in a less-peaked Ar density profile. Theoretical results from the NEO code suggest that neoclassical transport is not responsible for the change in transport, while the microstability analysis using GKW predicts a dominant ITG mode during both ECH and non-ECH plasmas

    Modelling of strain effects in manganite films

    Thickness dependence and strain effects in films of La1xAxMnO3La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3 perovskites are analyzed in the colossal magnetoresistance regime. The calculations are based on a generalization of a variational approach previously proposed for the study of manganite bulk. It is found that a reduction in the thickness of the film causes a decrease of critical temperature and magnetization, and an increase of resistivity at low temperatures. The strain is introduced through the modifications of in-plane and out-of-plane electron hopping amplitudes due to substrate-induced distortions of the film unit cell. The strain effects on the transition temperature and transport properties are in good agreement with experimental data only if the dependence of the hopping matrix elements on the MnOMnMn-O-Mn bond angle is properly taken into account. Finally variations of the electron-phonon coupling linked to the presence of strain turn out important in influencing the balance of coexisting phases in the filmComment: 7 figures.     Measurements of the Mass and Full-Width of the ηc\eta_c Meson

    In a sample of 58 million J/ψJ/\psi events collected with the BES II detector, the process J/ψγηc\psi\to\gamma\eta_c is observed in five different decay channels: γK+Kπ+π\gamma K^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-, γπ+ππ+π\gamma\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, γK±KS0π\gamma K^\pm K^0_S \pi^\mp (with KS0π+πK^0_S\to\pi^+\pi^-), γϕϕ\gamma \phi\phi (with ϕK+K\phi\to K^+K^-) and γppˉ\gamma p\bar{p}. From a combined fit of all five channels, we determine the mass and full-width of ηc\eta_c to be mηc=2977.5±1.0(stat.)±1.2(syst.)m_{\eta_c}=2977.5\pm1.0 ({stat.})\pm1.2 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2 and Γηc=17.0±3.7(stat.)±7.4(syst.)\Gamma_{\eta_c} = 17.0\pm3.7 ({stat.})\pm7.4 ({syst.}) MeV/c2c^2.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures and 4 table.
