Innovation and human failure in small-scale audiovisual archives – what do we need to learn from each other?

Based on several previous studies presented at IASA annual conferences (2001, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017) this paper intends to summarize long-term outcomes with a focus on the innovation needed in the digital era and the possible human failure in small-scale archives such as those the authors work with in Asia. In this paper, all authors[1] follow their specific question with the purpose of contributing to an analytic view on how technology collides with or creates a sense of community. Our emphasis is on sharing positive experiences and encouraging others by honestly discussing possible failures due to various conditions. Embedding these possible failures into a wider context is part of a mutual learning process. At the same time, each author will address a different clientele of stakeholders such as educational institutions, governmental decision makers, academia, occasional users, and the AV archivists themselves. Music and dance of Bun That Luang and the standardisation of cultural memories in present Laos.

Bun That Luang is one of the most important cultural events of the small inland country Laos. It is a traditional Buddhist festival as well as a demonstration of national culture. This paper aims to give an overview of its current organisation and of how music and dance performances are connected to the core activities of the traditional festival such as the circumambulation of the Golden Stupa (That Luang), processions of Buddhist and state hierarchy, offerings, and ritual field hockey. Due to the long term sharing of performance duties and having to consider the aesthetic values of certain state representatives, the variety of performances is becoming smaller each year. Modern media, on the other hand, distributes performances from Bun That Luang all over Laos which seem to equalise music and dance styles. These recent moves towards standardisation replace the notion of diversity in the cultural memory of Bun That Luang. The paper includes comprehensive audiovisual examples

Competitive effects of the airlines-within-airlines strategy – Pricing and route entry patterns

This paper investigates the effects of the airlines-within-airlines strategy adopted by Qantas airline group, which simultaneously runs a full-service airline (Qantas Airways) and a low-cost carrier (Jetstar Airways). Our empirical investigation of airline pricing and route entry patterns in the Australian domestic market suggests that Jetstar has been used as a fighting brand against rival low cost carriers. Such a strategy increases group airlines’ prices at the expenses of rival airlines. There is preliminary evidence that pricing benefits to Qantas Group come from increased market power as well as service quality improvements

Effect of Temperature on the Expression of Classical Enterotoxin Genes among Staphylococci Associated with Bovine Mastitis

Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP), caused by the contamination of staphylococcal enterotoxins, is a common foodborne disease worldwide. The aims of this study were: (1) to investigate classical staphylococcal enterotoxin genes, sea, seb, sec, sed, and see, among Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) associated with bovine mastitis; (2) to determine the effect of temperature on the expression of classical staphylococcal enterotoxin genes in staphylococci in milk. The detection of classical staphylococcal enterotoxin genes was performed using S. aureus (n = 51) and CNS (n = 47). The expression of classical enterotoxin genes, including sea, seb, sec, and see, was determined during the growth of staphylococci in milk subjected to ultra-high-temperature processing at two different temperatures: 8 °C and room temperature. Classical staphylococcal enterotoxin genes were expressed more frequently in S. aureus (35.30%) than in CNS (12.77%). The sec gene was most frequently detected in S. aureus (29.41%) and CNS (6.38%). Moreover, the expression of sea and sec was significantly higher at room temperature than at 8 °C after 16 h of incubation (p < 0.05). These results emphasize the importance of maintaining the storage temperature of milk below 8 °C to reduce the risk of SFP

DEVELOPMENT STATUS AND PROSPECTS FOR AVIATION HUBS — A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE MAJOR AIRPORTS IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA

This paper benchmarks the key performance measures of the hub airports in Southeast Asia. Our investigation suggests that (1) Hong Kong has been a leader in terms of network connectivity, traffic growth, hub airline developments, and cargo logistics. (2) Bangkok airport's growth has been constrained by political instability and weak hub airline development; in the long-run, the airport, however, has great potential. (3) The development of low-cost carriers have become a major driver for traffic growth, but the implications to airport connectivity have been unclear. (4) Despite limited progress on regional liberalization, intra-Asian routes have clearly contributed to traffic growth and hub airport connectivity. The Model to Assess the Implementation of Technical Conditions Defined in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78: The Case of the Baltic Sea Port of Klaipeda

Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission members seeking to implement MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV amendments which recognize the Baltic Sea as special are, in which discharge of uncommitted sewage from passenger ships is forbidden, must ensure that ports are equipped with adequate reception facilities. To ensure implementation of amendments of Annex IV in port of Klaipeda, the analysis framework model was defined by authors. The model evaluates the readiness of the port to changes brought by the amendments of MARPOL Annex IV. The scientific problem comes with perception of adequacy. Resolution MEPC.200(62) amending MARPOL 73/78 Annex IV states, that port reception facilities must be adequate to the needs of passenger ships using them without causing undue delay. Concept of adequacy is not defined, therefore other guidelines explaining adequacy were used: EU directive 2000/59/EC and IMO resolution MEPC.83(44) Guidelines for ensuring adequacy of port reception facilities. Based on these sources, criteria that must be met to ensure adequacy were identified and tested in article: 1) reception facilities meet needs of ships normally using them; 2) discharge of sewage does to cause undue delay; 3) reception facilities does not provide disincentive to use them; 4) facilities are accessible; 5) facilities contribute to the improvement of the marine environment
