Shear Layer Generation in Yield Behavior of Gels
The shear layer generation at the yield point and its recovery process are observed by the twin-drive rheometer. When the stress-ramp test or the shear rate-ramp test is applied to the colloidal gels, the stresses acting on the plates show different values under certain conditions. The bottom plate is used as a driving side, and the stress is controlled. Additionally, the upper plate side is a fixed side. The stress acting on the upper plate increases with the bottom plate, but at the occurrence of the yield behavior the different curve from the bottom plate is suddenly revealed. The stress acting on the upper plate becomes low, and the difference between the two stresses increases with an increasing stress or shear rate. This means that the shear stress is not constant over the gap, and a shear layer is generated. In the case of a small stress-ramp rate, the stress on the upper plate becomes the bottom value from the bottom plate stress at the yield point, but it returns to the same curve a few seconds later. The two layers of the shear layer generated at the yield point are adhered by the structure recovery, and the shear layer then disappeared

Polymers in Curved Boxes
We apply results derived in other contexts for the spectrum of the Laplace
operator in curved geometries to the study of an ideal polymer chain confined
to a spherical annulus in arbitrary space dimension D and conclude that the
free energy compared to its value for an uncurved box of the same thickness and
volume, is lower when , stays the same when , and is higher when
\mbox{}. Thus confining an ideal polymer chain to a cylindrical shell,
lowers the effective bending elasticity of the walls, and might induce
spontaneous symmetry breaking, i.e. bending. (Actually, the above mentioned
results show that {\em {any}} shell in induces this effect, except for
a spherical shell). We compute the contribution of this effect to the bending
rigidities in the Helfrich free energy expression.Comment: 20 pages RevTeX, epsf; 4 figures; submitted to Macromoledule
Derivative based global sensitivity measures
The method of derivative based global sensitivity measures (DGSM) has
recently become popular among practitioners. It has a strong link with the
Morris screening method and Sobol' sensitivity indices and has several
advantages over them. DGSM are very easy to implement and evaluate numerically.
The computational time required for numerical evaluation of DGSM is generally
much lower than that for estimation of Sobol' sensitivity indices. This paper
presents a survey of recent advances in DGSM concerning lower and upper bounds
on the values of Sobol' total sensitivity indices . Using these
bounds it is possible in most cases to get a good practical estimation of the
values of . Several examples are used to illustrate an
application of DGSM

Influence of randomly distributed magnetic nanoparticles on surface superconductivity in Nb films
We report on combined resistance and magnetic measurements in a hybrid
structure (HS) of randomly distributed anisotropic CoPt magnetic nanoparticles
(MN) embedded in a 160 nm Nb thick film. Our resistance measurements exhibited
a sharp increase at the magnetically determined bulk upper-critical fields
Hc2(T). Above these points the resistance curves are rounded, attaining the
normal state value at much higher fields identified as the surface
superconductivity fields Hc3(T). When plotted in reduced temperature units, the
characteristic field lines Hc3(T) of the HS and of a pure Nb film, prepared at
exactly the same conditions, coincide for H10 kOe
they strongly segregate. Interestingly, the characteristic value H=10 kOe is
equal to the saturation field of the MN. The behavior mentioned above is
observed only for the case where the field is normal to the HS, while is absent
when the field is parallel to the film. Our experimental results suggest that
the observed enhancement of surface superconductivity field Hc3(T) is possibly
due to the not uniform local reduction of the external magnetic field by the
dipolar fields of the MN.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
