    Studies of the Quality, Relaxation and Wear Resisting Properties of Vanadium High Grade Cast Iron

    We studied Relative Harte, Reife Grad and stress released heat treatment and wear resisting property of vanadium high grade cast iron, and found that these are superior to those of plain high grade cast iron. On the stress released heat treatment at 500~600℃, for 6 hours, vanadium cast iron keeps of better mechanical properties compared to those of plain cast iron. Vanadium cast iron is more resist to abnormal abrasion causion caused by increase of friction velocity

    Korean Version of the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score Questionnaire: Translation and Linguistic Validation

    PurposeThe overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS) consists of 4 questions regarding OAB symptoms. The aim of this study was to develop Korean version of the OABSS from the original Japanese version, with subsequent linguistic validation.MethodsBetween February and May 2008, the translation and linguistic validation process was performed as follows: a forward translation, reconciliation, backward translation, cognitive debriefing, and final proofreading.ResultsA forward translation from the original version of the OABSS to the Korean language was carried out by 2 native Korean speakers, who were also fluent in Japanese. Reconciliation was made after review of both translations by a panel consisting of both translators and one of the authors. Another bilingual translator who had never seen the original version of the OABSS carried out a translation of the reconciled version back into Japanese, and the original and backward-translated versions were subsequently compared. After discussion of all discrepancies between both versions by the panel, a second Korean version was produced. During cognitive debriefing, 5 outpatients with OAB reported that each question of the Korean version was significant and appropriate for their symptoms. However, 2 patients said that some parts of the questions or instructions were not clear or were not easy to understand. According to the cognitive debriefing, some words and phrases were revised into more understandable expressions.ConclusionsA Korean version of the OABSS was developed and linguistic validation was performed. Further studies are needed to assess the reproducibility and validity of the questionnaire in Korean populations

    Safety and efficacy of silodosin for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

    Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are highly prevalent in older men. Medical therapy is the first-line treatment for LUTS associated with BPH. Mainstays in the treatment of male LUTS and clinical BPH are the α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists. Silodosin is a new α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist that is selective for the α1A-adrenergic receptor. By antagonizing α1A-adrenergic receptors in the prostate and urethra, silodosin causes smooth muscle relaxation in the lower urinary tract. Since silodosin has greater affinity for the α1A-adrenergic receptor than for the α1B-adrenergic receptor, it minimizes the propensity for blood pressure-related adverse effects caused by α1B-adrenergic receptor blockade. In the clinical studies, patients receiving silodosin at a total daily dose of 8 mg exhibited significant improvements in the International Prostate Symptom Score and maximum urinary flow rate compared with those receiving placebo. Silodosin showed early onset of efficacy for both voiding and storage symptoms. Furthermore, long-term safety of silodosin was also demonstrated. Retrograde or abnormal ejaculation was the most commonly reported adverse effect. The incidence of orthostatic hypotension was low. In conclusion, silodosin, a novel selective α1A-adrenergic receptor antagonist, was effective in general and without obtrusive side effects. This review provides clear evidence in support of the clinical usefulness of silodosin in the treatment of LUTS associated with BPH

    Development of Nephrotic Syndrome after Administration of Sorafenib in a Case of Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma

    Nephrotic syndrome, after administration of tyrosine kinase inhibitors, is uncommon and not well known. A 62-year-old male, who had experienced a left nephrectomy due to a traffic accident 38 years ago, underwent a partial nephrectomy for right renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Histologically, the tumor was a clear cell RCC. Two years later abdominal CT revealed para-aortic lymph node metastasis. During these two years, serum creatinine had increased from 2.0 mg/dL to 2.9 mg/dL along with the appearance of proteinuria. After only a week of sorafenib, 400 mg/day, fever developed and sorafenib was stopped. Although normotensive, his serum creatinine increased to 3.83 mg/dL and serum albumin decreased from 1.8 g/L to 1.0 g/L. Proteinuria also worsened to 27.5 g/day. He became edematous, and ascites and cardiac effusions also appeared. He was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome. A retrospective review of the histology of the partial nephrectomy revealed no change in the glomeruli

    Adenoma-carcinoma Sequence in the Bladder After Augmentation Cystoplasty

    AbstractWe present a case of a 64-year-old woman showing multistep progression from adenoma to adenocarcinoma in the bladder 46 years after augmentation ileocystoplasty. She underwent augmentation ileocystoplasty for tuberculous contracted bladder at 18 years. After 44 years, tubulovillous adenomas were found and resected at the ileovesical anastomosis site. After 2 more years, bladder tumors recurred and revealed adenocarcinomas. Finally, radical cystectomy was required because of frequent recurrence and tumor extensiveness. To our knowledge, this is the first case demonstrating adenoma-carcinoma sequence histopathologically in the bladder after augmentation cystoplasty, indicating multistep carcinogenesis similar to intestinal carcinogenesis

    hTERT promoter polymorphism, -1327C\u3eT, is associated with the risk of epithelial cancer

    Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences that cap the end of eukaryotic chromosomes. Attrition of these structures has been associated with carcinogenesis in many tissues, and therefore, they are essential for chromosome stabilization. Telomeres are maintained by telomerase complexes, of which human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is an essential component. A functional polymorphism, -1327C\u3eT (rs2735940), located in the promoter of the hTERT gene is associated with telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes. We hypothesized that this polymorphism might affect susceptibility to various epithelial malignancies. The -1327C\u3eT polymorphism was examined in 1,551 consecutive autopsy cases (mean age, 80.3 years), and we focused on its effect on the risks of overall and each primary malignancies. The polymorphism was further studied in 391 clinical prostate cancer patients who were diagnosed via prostate biopsy, using autopsy cases as controls. In the autopsy cases, the risk of epithelial malignancy, after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, and drinking habits, was significantly lower for the TT genotype than the CC (reference) genotype (adjusted odds ratio = 0.61, 95% CI = 0.42-0.90). Among primary malignancies, latent prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, and lung cancer were the most strongly associated with the polymorphism. In the study using clinical prostate cancer patients, susceptibility to clinical prostate cancer was lower for -1327 T carriers than for -1327 T non-carriers, but this finding was not significant. The data suggest that the hTERT promoter polymorphism, -1327C\u3eT, is an independent factor influencing the risk of various epithelial malignancies in elderly Japanese

    Quantitative activation-induced manganese-enhanced MRI reveals severity of Parkinson’s disease in mice

    We demonstrate that activation-induced manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with quantitative determination of the longitudinal relaxation time (qAIM-MRI) reveals the severity of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in mice. We first show that manganese ion-accumulation depends on neuronal activity. A highly active region was then observed by qAIM-MRI in the caudate-putamen in PD-model mice that was significantly correlated to the severity of PD, suggesting its involvement in the expression of PD symptoms

    Genetic diversity and structure in the Sado captive population of the Japanese crested ibis.

    The Japanese crested ibis Nipponia nippon is a critically threatened bird. We assessed genetic diversity and structure in the Sado captive population of the Japanese crested ibis based on 24 and 50 microsatellite markers developed respectively for the same and related species. Of a total of 74 loci, 19 showed polymorphisms in the five founder birds of the population, and therefore were useful for the analysis of genetic diversity and structure. Genetic diversity measures, A, ne, He, Hoand PIC, obtained by genotyping of the 138 descendants were similar to those of other species with population bottlenecks, and thus considerably low. The low level of genetic diversity resulting from such bottlenecks was consistent with the results of lower genetic diversity measures for the Sado captive relative to the Chinese population that is the source population for the Sado group as determined using previously reported data and heterozygosity excess by Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium tests. Further, individual clustering based on the allele-sharing distance and Bayesian model-based clustering revealed that the founder genomes were equally at population in total, and with various admixture patterns at individual levels inherited by the descendants. The clustering results, together with the result of inheritance of all alleles of the microsatellites from the founders to descendants, suggest that planned mating in captive-breeding programs for the population has succeeded in maintaining genetic diversity and minimizing kinship. In addition, the Bayesian model-based clustering assumed two different components of genomes in the Sado captive Japanese crested ibis, supporting a considerably low level of genetic diversity
