Comparing the Ancient Star Formation Histories of the Magellanic Clouds
We present preliminary results from a new HST archival program aimed at
tightly constraining the ancient (>4 Gyr ago) star formation histories (SFHs)
of the field populations of the SMC and LMC. We demonstrate the quality of the
archival data by constructing HST/WFPC2-based color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs;
M_{F555W} ~ +8) for 7 spatially diverse fields in the SMC and 8 fields in the
LMC. The HST-based CMDs are >2 magnitudes deeper than any from ground based
observations, and are particularly superior in high surface brightness regions,
e.g., the LMC bar, which contain a significant fraction of star formation and
are crowding limited from ground based observations. To minimize systematic
uncertainties, we derive the SFH of each field using an identical maximum
likelihood CMD fitting technique. We then compute an approximate mass weighted
average SFH for each galaxy. We find that both galaxies lack a dominant burst
of early star formation, which suggests either a suppression or an
under-fueling of early star formation. From 10-12 Gyr ago, the LMC experienced
a period of enhanced stellar mass growth relative to the SMC. Similar to some
previous studies, we find two notable peaks in the SFH of the SMC at ~4.5 and 9
Gyr ago, which could be due to repeated close passages with the LMC, implying
an interaction history that has persisted for at least 9 Gyr. We find little
evidence for strong periodic behavior in the lifetime SFHs of both MCs,
suggesting that repeated encounters with the Milky Way are unlikely. Beginning
~3.5 Gyr ago, both galaxies show increases in their SFHs, in agreement with

In search of flavour-nutrient learning:A study of the Samburu pastoralists of North-Central Kenya
Much of our dietary behaviour is learned. In particular, one suggestion is that ‘flavour-nutrient learning’ (F-NL) influences both choice and intake of food. F-NL occurs when an association forms between the orosensory properties of a food and its postingestive effects. Unfortunately, this process has been difficult to evaluate because F-NL is rarely observed in controlled studies of adult humans. One possibility is that we are disposed to F-NL. However, learning is compromised by exposure to a complex Western diet that includes a wide range of energy-dense foods. To test this idea we explored evidence for F-NL in a sample of semi-nomadic pastoralists who eat a very limited diet, and who are lean and food stressed. Our Samburu participants (N = 68) consumed a sensory-matched portion (400 g) of either a novel low (0.72 kcal/g) or higher (1.57 kcal/g) energy-dense semi-solid food on two training days, and an intermediate version on day 3. Before and after each meal we measured appetite and assessed expected satiation and liking for the test food. We found no evidence of F-NL. Nevertheless, self-reported measures were very consistent and, as anticipated, expected satiation increased as the test food became familiar (expectedsatiation drift). Surprisingly,we observed insensitivity to the effects of test-meal energy density on measures of post-meal appetite. To explore this further we repeated a single training day using participants (N = 52) from the UK. Unlike in the Samburu, the higher energy-dense meal caused greater suppression of appetite. These observations expose interesting cross-cultural differences in sensitivity to the energy content of food. More generally, our work illustrates how measures can be translated to assess different populations, highlighting the potential for further comparisons of this kind
Portion Size Influences Intake in Samburu Kenyan People Not Exposed to the Western Obesogenic Environment
For people in the modernized food environment, external factors like food variety, palatability, and ubiquitous learned cues for food availability can overcome internal, homeostatic signals to promote excess intake. Portion size is one such external cue; people typically consume more when served more, often without awareness. Though susceptibility to external cues may be attributed to the modernized, cue-saturated environment, there is little research on people living outside that context, or with distinctly different food norms. We studied a sample of Samburu people in rural Kenya who maintain a traditional, semi-nomadic pastoralist lifestyle, eat a very limited diet, and face chronic food insecurity. Participants (12 male, 12 female, aged 20–74, mean BMI = 18.4) attended the study on two days and were provided in counterbalanced order an individual serving bowl containing 1.4 or 2.3 kg of a familiar bean and maize stew. Amount consumed was recorded along with post-meal questions in their dialect about their awareness of intake amount. Data were omitted from two participants who consumed the entire portion in a session. Even though the ‘smaller’ serving was a very large meal, participants consumed 40% more when given the larger serving, despite being unable to reliably identify which day they consumed more food. This result in the Samburu demonstrates the portion size effect is not a by-product of the modern food environment and may represent a more fundamental feature of human dietary psychology
Chemical Abundances in Field Red Giants from High-Resolution H-Band Spectra using the APOGEE Spectral Linelist
High-resolution H-band spectra of five bright field K, M, and MS giants,
obtained from the archives of the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) Fourier
Transform Spectrometer (FTS), are analyzed to determine chemical abundances of
16 elements. The abundances were derived via spectrum synthesis using the
detailed linelist prepared for the SDSS III Apache Point Galactic Evolution
Experiment (APOGEE), which is a high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopic
survey to derive detailed chemical abundance distributions and precise radial
velocities for 100,000 red giants sampling all Galactic stellar populations.
Measured chemical abundances include the cosmochemically important isotopes
12C, 13C, 14N, and 16O, along with Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co,
Ni, and Cu. A comparison of the abundances derived here with published values
for these stars reveals consistent results to ~0.1 dex. The APOGEE spectral
region and linelist is, thus, well-suited for probing both Galactic chemical
evolution, as well as internal nucleosynthesis and mixing in populations of red

Argon Abundances in the Solar Neighborhood: Non-LTE Analysis of Orion Association B-type Stars
Argon abundances have been derived for a sample of B main-sequence stars in
the Orion association. The abundance calculations are based on NLTE metal
line-blanketed model atmospheres calculated with the NLTE code TLUSTY and an
updated and complete argon model atom. We derive an average argon abundance for
this young population of A(Ar) = 6.66 +- 0.06. While our result is in excellent
agreement with a recent analysis of the Orion nebula, it is significantly
higher than the currently recommended solar value which is based on abundance
measurements in the solar corona. Moreover, the derived argon abundances in the
Orion B stars agree very well with a measurement from a solar impulsive flare
during which unmodified solar photospheric material was brought to flare
conditions. We therefore argue that the argon abundances obtained independently
for both the Orion B stars and the Orion nebula are representative of the disk
abundance value in the solar neighborhood. The lower coronal abundance may
reflect a depletion related to the FIP effect. We propose a new reference value
for the abundance of argon in the solar neighborhood, A(Ar) = 6.63 +- 0.10,
