Lowest Order Effective Field Theory for the weak interaction
The interaction, responsible for the decay of
hypernuclei, is studied by means of an Effective Field Theory where the long
range physics is described by pion and kaon exchange mechanisms, and its short
range counterpart is obtained from the most general non-derivative local
four-fermion interaction. We show that, including the Lowest Order Parity
Conserving contact terms, allows us to reproduce the total decay rates for
, and with
a reasonable value of , while in order to get a prediction for
the Parity Violating (PV) asymmetry compatible with experiments, we have to

Relation between early life socioeconomic position and all cause mortality in two generations. A longitudinal study of Danish men born in 1953 and their parents
Objective: To examine (1) the relation between parental socioeconomic position and all cause mortality in two generations, (2) the relative importance of mother’s educational status and father’s occupational status on offspring mortality, and (3) the effect of factors in the family environment on these relations.
Design: A longitudinal study with record linkage to the Civil Registration System. The data were analysed using Cox regression models.
Setting: Copenhagen, Denmark.
Subjects: 2890 men born in 1953, whose mothers were interviewed regarding family social background in 1968. The vital status of this population and their parents was ascertained from April 1968 to January 2002.
Main outcome measures: All cause mortality in study participants, their mothers, and fathers.
Results: A similar pattern of relations was found between parental social position and all cause mortality in adult life in the three triads of father, mother, and offspring constituted of the cohort of men born in 1953, their parents, and grandparents. The educational status of mothers showed no independent effect on total mortality when father’s occupational social class was included in the model in either of the triads. Low material wealth was the indicator that remained significantly associated with adult all cause mortality in a model also including parental social position and the intellectual climate of the family in 1968. In the men born in 1953 the influence of material wealth was strongest for deaths later in adult life.
Conclusion: Father’s occupational social class is associated with adult mortality in all members of the mother-father-offspring triad. Material wealth seems to be an explanatory factor for this association
Hadronic parity violation and effective field theory
The subject of hadronic parity violation is briefly reviewed and an approach based on effective field theory is advocated in order to resolve current problems
Extracting Electric Polarizabilities from Lattice QCD
Charged and neutral, pion and kaon electric polarizabilities are extracted
from lattice QCD using an ensemble of anisotropic gauge configurations with
dynamical clover fermions. We utilize classical background fields to access the
polarizabilities from two-point correlation functions. Uniform background
fields are achieved by quantizing the electric field strength with the proper
treatment of boundary flux. These external fields, however, are implemented
only in the valence quark sector. A novel method to extract charge particle

The role of resonances in non-leptonic hyperon decays
We examine the importance of resonances for the non-leptonic hyperon decays
in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Lower lying resonances are
included into the effective theory. Integrating out the heavy degrees of
freedom in the resonance saturation scheme generates higher order counterterms
in the effective Lagrangian, providing an estimate of the pertinent coupling
constants. A fit to the eight independent decay amplitudes that are not related
by isospin symmetry is performed and reasonable agreement for both s- and p-

Non-leptonic hyperon decays in chiral perturbation theory
The non-leptonic hyperon decays are analyzed up to one-loop order including
all counterterms in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory.
We use the exchange of the spin-3/2 decuplet resonances as an indication of
which low-energy constants contribute significantly to these investigated
processes . We choose four independent decay amplitudes that are not related by
isospin relations in order to perform a fit for the pertinent low-energy
constants and find a satisfactory fit both for s- and p-waves. The chiral
corrections to the lowest order forms for the s-waves are moderate whereas
there are significant modifications of the p-wave amplitudes.Comment: 40 pages, 4 figure
Stereoselective cis -Vinylcyclopropanation via a Gold(I)-Catalyzed Retro-Buchner Reaction under Mild Conditions
A highly stereoselective gold(I)-catalyzed cis-vinylcyclopropanation of alkenes has been developed. Allylic gold carbenes, generated via a retro-Buchner reaction of 7-alkenyl-1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes, react with alkenes to form vinylcyclopropanes. The gold(I)-catalyzed retro-Buchner reaction of these substrates proceeds by simple heating at a temperature much lower than that required for the reaction of 7-aryl-1,3,5-cycloheptatrienes (75 °C vs 120 °C). A newly developed Julia−Kocienski reagent enables the synthesis of the required cycloheptatriene derivatives in one step from readily available aldehydes or ketones. On the basis of mechanistic investigations, a stereochemical model for the cis selectivity was proposed. An unprecedented gold-catalyzed isomerization of cis– to trans-cyclopropanes has also been discovered and studied by DFT calculations
