The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES) II. Spectroscopic analysis of the survey sample
We present the results of analysis of ``snapshot'' spectra of 253 metal-poor
halo stars -3.8 < [Fe/H] < -1.5 obtained in the HERES survey. The spectra are
analysed using an automated line profile analysis method based on the
Spectroscopy Made Easy codes of Valenti & Piskunov. Elemental abundances of
moderate precision have been obtained for 22 elements, C, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti,
V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu, where
detectable. Among the sample of 253 stars, we find 8 r-II stars and 35 r-I
stars. We also find three stars with strong enhancements of Eu which are
s-process rich. A significant number of new very metal-poor stars are
confirmed: 49 stars with [Fe/H] < -3 and 181 stars with -3 < [Fe/H] < -2. We
find one star with [Fe/H] < -3.5. We find the scatter in the abundance ratios
of Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni, with respect to Fe and Mg, to be similar
to the estimated relative errors and thus the cosmic scatter to be small,
perhaps even non-existent. The elements C, Sr, Y, Ba and Eu, and perhaps Zr,
show scatter at [Fe/H] < -2.5 significantly larger than can be explained from
the errors in the analysis, implying scatter which is cosmic in origin.
Significant scatter is observed in abundance ratios between light and heavy
neutron-capture elements at low metallicity and low levels of r-process

HST/STIS Imaging of the Host Galaxy of GRB980425/SN1998bw
We present HST/STIS observations of ESO 184-G82, the host galaxy of the
gamma-ray burst GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar Type Ic supernova
SN1998bw. ESO 184-G82 is found to be an actively star forming SBc sub-luminous
galaxy. We detect an object consistent with being a point source within the
astrometric uncertainty of 0.018 arcseconds of the position of the supernova.
The object is located inside a star-forming region and is at least one
magnitude brighter than expected for the supernova based on a simple
radioactive decay model. This implies either a significant flattening of the

Galactic Extinction from Colors and Counts of Field Galaxies in WFPC2 Frames: An Application to GRB 970228
We develop the ``simulated extinction method'' to measure average foreground
Galactic extinction from field galaxy number-counts and colors. The method
comprises simulating extinction in suitable reference fields by changing the
isophotal detection limit. This procedure takes into account selection effects,
in particular, the change in isophotal detection limit (and hence in isophotal
magnitude completeness limit) with extinction, and the galaxy color--magnitude
relation.
We present a first application of the method to the HST WFPC2 images of the
gamma-ray burster GRB 970228. Four different WFPC2 high-latitude fields,
including the HDF, are used as reference to measure the average extinction
towards the GRB in the F606W passband. From the counts, we derive an average
extinction of A_V = 0.5 mag, but the dispersion of 0.4 mag between the
estimates from the different reference fields is significantly larger than can
be accounted by Poisson plus clustering uncertainties. Although the counts
differ, the average colors of the field galaxies agree well. The extinction
implied by the average color difference between the GRB field and the reference
galaxies is A_V = 0.6 mag, with a dispersion in the estimated extinction from
the four reference fields of only 0.1 mag. All our estimates are in good
agreement with the value of 0.81\pm0.27 mag obtained by Burstein & Heiles, and
with the extinction of 0.78\pm0.12 measured by Schlegel et al. from maps of
dust IR emission. However, the discrepancy between the widely varying counts
and the very stable colors in these high-latitude fields is worth

The Relationship Between Baryons and Dark Matter in Extended Galaxy Halos
The relationship between gas-rich galaxies and Ly-alpha absorbers is
addressed in this paper in the context of the baryonic content of galaxy halos.
Deep Arecibo HI observations are presented of two gas-rich spiral galaxies
within 125 kpc projected distance of a Ly-alpha absorber at a similar velocity.
The galaxies investigated are close to edge-on and the absorbers lie almost
along their major axes, allowing for a comparison of the Ly-alpha absorber
velocities with galactic rotation. This comparison is used to examine whether
the absorbers are diffuse gas rotating with the galaxies' halos, outflow
material from the galaxies, or intergalactic gas in the low redshift cosmic
web. The results indicate that if the gas resides in the galaxies' halos it is
not rotating with the system and possibly counter-rotating. In addition, simple
geometry indicates the gas was not ejected from the galaxies and there are no
gas-rich satellites detected down to 3.6 - 7.5 x 10^6 Msun, or remnants of
satellites to 5-6 x 10^{18} cm^{-2}. The gas could potentially be infalling
from large radii, but the velocities and distances are rather high compared to
the high velocity clouds around the Milky Way. The most likely explanation is
the galaxies and absorbers are not directly associated, despite the vicinity of
the spiral galaxies to the absorbers (58-77 kpc from the HI edge). The spiral
galaxies reside in a filament of intergalactic gas, and the gas detected by the
absorber has not yet come into equilibrium with the galaxy. These results also
indicate that the massive, extended dark matter halos of spiral galaxies do not
commonly have an associated diffuse baryonic component at large radii.Comment: Accepted by AJ, 33 pages preprint format, see

An HST/WFPC2 Snapshot Survey of 2MASS-Selected Red QSOs
Using simple infrared color selection, 2MASS has found a large number of red,
previously unidentified, radio-quiet QSOs. Although missed by UV/optical
surveys, the 2MASS QSOs have K-band luminosities that are comparable to
"classical" QSOs. This suggests the possible discovery of a previously
predicted large population of dust-obscured radio-quiet QSOs. We present the
results of an imaging survey of 29 2MASS QSOs observed with WFPC2 onboard the
Hubble Space Telescope. I-band images, which benefit from the relative
faintness of the nuclei at optical wavelengths, are used to characterize the
host galaxies, measure the nuclear contribution to the total observed I-band
emission, and to survey the surrounding environments. The 2MASS QSOs are found
to lie in galaxies with a variety of morphologies, luminosities, and dynamical
states, not unlike those hosting radio-quiet PG QSOs. Our analysis suggests
that the extraordinary red colors of the 2MASS QSOs are caused by extinction of

Disease mapping of early- and late-stage cancer to monitor inequalities in early detection: a study of cutaneous malignant melanoma
We consider disease mapping of early- and late-stage cancer, in order to identify and monitor inequalities in early detection. Our method is demonstrated by mapping cancer incidence at high geographical resolution using data on 10,302 cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) cases within the 3.7 million population of South-West Sweden. The cases were geocoded into small-areas, each with a population size between 600 and 2600 and accessible socio-demographic data. Using the disease mapping application Rapid Inquiry Facility (RIF) 4.0, we produced regional maps to visualise spatial variations in stage I, II and IIIâIV CMM incidences, complemented by local maps to explore the variations within two urban areas. Pronounced spatial disparities in stage I CMM incidence were revealed by the regional and local maps. Stage I CMM incidence was markedly higher in wealthier small-areas, in particular within each urban area. A twofold higher stage I incidence was observed, on average, in the wealthiest small-areas (upper quintile) than in the poorest small-areas (lower quintile). We identified in the regional map of stage IIIâIV CMM two clusters of higher or lower than expected late-stage incidences which were quite distinct from those identified for stage I. In conclusion, our analysis of CMM incidences supported the use of this method of cancer stage incidence mapping for revealing geographical and socio-demographic disparities in cancer detection
On the Relation Between Peak Luminosity and Parent Population of Type Ia Supernovae: A New Tool for Probing the Ages of Distant Galaxies
We study the properties of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) as functions of the
radial distance from their host galaxy centers. Using a sample of 62 SNe Ia
with reliable luminosity, reddening, and decline rate determinations, we find
no significant radial gradients of SNe Ia peak absolute magnitudes or decline
rates in elliptical+S0 galaxies, suggesting that the diversity of SN properties
is not related to the metallicity of their progenitors. We do find that the
range in brightness and light curve width of supernovae in spiral galaxies
extends to brighter, broader values. These results are interpreted as support
for an age, but not metallicity, related origin of the diversity in SNe Ia. If
confirmed with a larger and more accurate sample of data, the age-luminosity
relation would offer a new and powerful tool to probe the ages and age
gradients of stellar populations in galaxies at redshift as high as .
The absence of significant radial gradients in the peak and colors of SNe Ia supports the redding correction method of Phillips et
al (1999). We find no radial gradient in residuals from the SN Ia
luminosity-width relation, suggesting that the relation is not affected by
properties of the progenitor populations and supporting the reliability of
