Pioneer Venus spacecraft charging model
Five environmental models were constructed to represent the solar wind and the upper, middle, and lower ionosphere of Venus. The spacecraft structure was modeled with over 140 passive electrical elements representing structural elements of the spacecraft. Electron, ion, secondary electron, and photocurrents to the spacecraft from the plasma were calculated, ignoring sheath effects. In all but one case, potentials of interest were less than 1 volt. Potential differences between widely separated points on the equipment shelf were less than 1 mV. The one area of concern is the solar panel potential when the orbiter is passing through the bowshock region
An investigation of the basement complex aquifer system in Lofa county, Liberia, for the purpose of siting boreholes
Liberia is recovering from a 14 year civil war and only 51% of the rural population has access to safe drinking water. Little hydrogeological knowledge survives in Liberia, increasing the difficulty in successfully siting new boreholes. An understanding of the local hydrogeological environment is therefore needed to improve borehole site selection and increase success rates. This research provides a semi-quantitative characterization of the hydrogeological environment of the basement aquifer in Lofa county, Liberia. Based on literature review and analysis of borehole logs, the study has developed a conceptual hydrogeological model for the local conditions, which is further characterized using 2D geoelectrical sections. Groundwater is predominantly obtained from the saprolite and underlying fractured bedrock, but specific capacities (median 281 l h-1 m-1; 25th and 75th percentile of 179 and 490 l h-1 m-1, respectively) are constrained by the limited thickness of the saturated saprolite. This study has shown that the groundwater resources in the crystalline basement in this part of Liberia conform to the general conceptual model, allowing standard techniques used elsewhere for siting and developing groundwater to be used
Solar Flare X-ray Source Motion as a Response to Electron Spectral Hardening
Context: Solar flare hard X-rays (HXRs) are thought to be produced by
nonthermal coronal electrons stopping in the chromosphere, or remaining trapped
in the corona. The collisional thick target model (CTTM) predicts that sources
produced by harder power-law injection spectra should appear further down the
legs or footpoints of a flare loop. Therefore, hardening of the injected
power-law electron spectrum during flare onset should be concurrent with a
descending hard X-ray source.
Aims: To test this implication of the CTTM by comparing its predicted HXR
source locations with those derived from observations of a solar flare which
exhibits a nonthermally-dominated spectrum before the peak in HXRs, known as an
early impulsive event.
Methods: HXR images and spectra of an early impulsive C-class flare were
obtained using the Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI).
Images were reconstructed to produce HXR source height evolutions for three
energy bands. Spatially-integrated spectral analysis was performed to isolate
nonthermal emission, and to determine the power-law index of the electron
injection spectrum. The observed height-time evolutions were then fit with
CTTM-based simulated heights for each energy.
Results: A good match between model and observed source heights was reached,
requiring a density model that agreed well with previous studies of flare loop
densities.
Conclusions: The CTTM has been used to produce a descent of model HXR source
heights that compares well with observations of this event. Based on this
interpretation, downward motion of nonthermal sources should indeed occur in
any flare where there is spectral hardening in the electron distribution during
a flare. However, this would often be masked by thermal emission associated
with flare plasma pre-heating.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Contextual and interdependent causes of climate change adaptation barriers: Insights from water management institutions in Himachal Pradesh, India
Research on adaptation barriers is increasing as the need for climate change adaptation becomes evident. However, empirical studies regarding the emergence, causes and sustenance of adaptation barriers remain limited. This research identifies key contextual causes of adaptation barriers in water institutions in the mountainous Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh in northern India. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with representatives from twenty-six key governmental, non-governmental, academic and research institutions in the State with responsibilities spanning domestic water supply, irrigation and hydropower generation, environmental monitoring and research. It identified low knowledge capacity and resources, policy implementation gaps, normative attitudes, and unavailability and inaccessibility of data and information compounded with weak interinstitutional networks as key adaptation barriers. Although these barriers are similar to those reported elsewhere, they have important locally-contextual root causes. For instance, inadequate resources result from fragmented resources allocation due to competing developmental priorities and the desire of the political leadership to please diverse electors, rather than climate scepticism. The identified individual barriers are found to be highly inter-dependent and closely intertwined which enables the identification of leverage points for interventions to maximise barrier removal. For instance, breaking down key barriers hindering accessibility to data and information, which are shaped by systemic bureaucracies and cultural attitudes, will involve attitudinal change through sensitisation to the importance of accurate and accessible data and information and the building trust between different actors, in addition to institutional structural changes through legislation and inter-institutional agreements. Approaching barriers as a system of contextually interconnected cultural, systemic, geographical and political underlying factors enriches the understanding of adaptation enablers, thereby contributing to achieving a better adapted society
Testing Broken U(1) Symmetry in a Two-Component Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensate
We present a scheme for determining if the quantum state of a small trapped
Bose-Einstein condensate is a state with well defined number of atoms, a Fock
state, or a state with a broken U(1) gauge symmetry, a coherent state. The
proposal is based on the observation of Ramsey fringes. The population
difference observed in a Ramsey fringe experiment will exhibit collapse and
revivals due to the mean-field interactions. The collapse and revival times
depend on the relative strength of the mean-field interactions for the two

Ultrapure glass optical waveguide development in microgravity by the sol-gel process
Multicomponent, homogeneous, noncrystalline oxide gels can be prepared by the sol-gel process and these gels are promising starting materials for melting glasses in the space environment. The sol-gel process referred to here is based on the polymerization reaction of alkoxysilane with other metal alkoxy compounds or suitable metal salts. Many of the alkoxysilanes or other metal alkoxides are liquids and thus can be purified by distillation. The use of gels offers several advantages such as high purity and lower melting times and temperatures. The sol-gel process is studied for utilization in the preparation of multicomponent ultrapure glass batches for subsequent containerless melting of the batches in space to prepare glass blanks for optical waveguides
