    Effect of Self- and Inter-Cultivar Grafting on Growth and Nutrient Content in Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.)

    Vegetable grafting has been applied to fruiting crops, yet only to a limited extent in leafy greens and herbs which may also benefit from grafting. In this study, we examined the effect of reciprocal grafting two sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) cultivars of differing vigor on plant growth and leaf mineral nutrient concentration to test whether differences in growth exist due to grafting and whether such differences are due to altered plant nutrient status in two trials. Two cultivars ‘Nufar’ (NU), a high vigor cultivar, and ‘Dolce Fresca’ (DF), a cultivar developed for compact growth, were selected. Four grafted treatments (scion/rootstock) were created by self-grafting (NU/NU and DF/DF) and reciprocal inter-cultivar grafting (DF/NU and NU/DF). Un-grafted plants (ug-NU and ug-DF) served as controls. Following grafting, plants were grown for 26 or 21 days in a greenhouse. DF rootstocks decreased NU shoot dry mass (19–29%) and stem length (12%) compared to ug-NU in both trials, while dry root mass was reduced (28%) in the second trial. In contrast, NU rootstocks did not affect DF growth in the first trial but significantly decreased dry shoot (18%) and root (31%) mass, compared to ug-DF in the second. Concentration of most inorganic nutrients examined was affected by both rootstock and scion genotype. For NU scions, DF rootstocks resulted in significantly higher (5–29%) levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, copper, and zinc in leaf tissue than ug-NU. For DF scions, NU rootstocks resulted in significantly higher (7–9%) levels of potassium and phosphorus but significantly lower (11–23%) levels of magnesium, sulfur, boron, copper, and zinc when compared to ug-DF. Results of this study show that inter-cultivar grafting sweet basil using a more vigorous cultivar as a rootstock did not enhance the growth of a less vigorous scion and reduced concentrations of certain nutrients. However, grafting a vigorous scion to a less vigorous rootstock reduced shoot growth but generally increased nutrient concentrations. This suggests that changes in growth in grafted basil are not due to altered nutrient status. Further research is needed to determine specific physiological processes influencing grafted basil growth

    Risk of severe COVID-19 in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases treated with immunosuppressive therapy in Scotland

    Objective: To investigate the association of severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs) treated with immunosuppressive drugs. Method: A list of 4633 patients on targeted – biological or targeted synthetic – DMARDs in March 2020 was linked to a case– control study that includes all cases of COVID-19 in Scotland. Results: By 22 November 2021, 433 of the 4633 patients treated with targeted DMARDS had been diagnosed with COVID-19, of whom 58 had been hospitalized. With all those in the population not on DMARDs as the reference category, the rate ratio for hospitalized COVID-19 associated with DMARD treatment was 2.14 [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.02–2.26] in those on conventional synthetic (cs) DMARDs, 2.01 (95% CI 1.38–2.91) in those on tumour necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors as the only targeted agent, and 3.83 (95% CI 2.65–5.56) in those on other targeted DMARDs. Among those on csDMARDs, rate ratios for hospitalized COVID-19 were lowest at 1.66 (95% CI 1.51–1.82) in those on methotrexate and highest at 5.4 (95% CI 4.4–6.7) in those on glucocorticoids at an average dose > 10 mg/day prednisolone equivalent. Conclusion: The risk of hospitalized COVID-19 is elevated in IRD patients treated with immunosuppressive drugs compared with the general population. Of these drugs, methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine, and TNF inhibitors carry the lowest risk. The highest risk is associated with prednisolone. A larger study is needed to estimate reliably the risks associated with each class of targeted DMAR

    Simulated Casualties and Medics for Emergency Training

    The MediSim system extends virtual environment technology to allow medical personnel to interact with and train on simulated casualties. The casualty model employs a three-dimensional animated human body that displays appropriate physical and behavioral responses to injury and/or treatment. Medical corpsmen behaviors were developed to allow the actions of simulated medical personnel to conform to both military practice and medical protocols during patient assessment and stabilization. A trainee may initiate medic actions through a mouse and menu interface; a VR interface has also been created by Stansfield\u27s research group at Sandia National Labs

    Microclimate drives shelter-seeking behaviour in lambing ewes

    Silvopastoral agroforestry and the strategic placement of trees and hedgerows offers potential to improve livestock welfare and production efficiency through the provision of shelter in livestock farming systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between shelter-seeking behaviour of ewes during the lambing period and the microclimate influenced by landscape shelter features. Artificial and natural shelter was provided to Aberfield ewes (n = 15) on an upland sheep farm in Wales, UK, which were then continuously monitored for 14 days using global positioning system tracking devices. Modelling of microclimate influenced by topographical shelter features at the test site was used to generate a 1 m resolution wind field for geospatial statistical analysis of localised wind speed. Ewes demonstrated an increased preference for natural (3.4-fold; p < 0.01) and artificial (3.0-fold; p < 0.05) shelter zones five times the height of the shelter, compared to the exposed area of the trial site. Wind-chill and modelled local-scale wind speeds were found to have the greatest influence on shelter-seeking behaviour, with temperature and field-scale wind speed significantly influencing livestock behaviour. Mean wind-chill temperature during the trial was 3.7 °C (min −5.3 °C; max 13.1 °C), which is within the cold stress temperature threshold (−3 and 8 °C) that requires thermoregulatory strategies such as shelter-seeking behaviour. An improved understanding of the relationship between microclimate and shelter-seeking behaviour in sheep, demonstrated through the agent-based model developed in this project, shall better inform the economic incentives (e.g., reduction in lamb mortality and forage requirements) behind silvopastoral practices that benefit farm productivity, livestock welfare and the environment
