Titian’s \u3ci\u3ePoesie\u3c/i\u3e: The Visual Allegories of Morality and Religion

    Get PDF
Venetian painter Tiziano Vecellio, more commonly referred to as Titian, created a cycle of mythological paintings based on scenes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses for King Philip II of Spain. These works are often viewed through an eroticized lens due to this inclusion of nude mortals and goddesses. This thesis argues for the cycle’s moral and religious significance for Philip by utilizing comparative iconography, scholarly texts, and translated allegorical material

AN EXAMINATION OF ATTITUDES TOWARD MATHEMATICS IN STUDENT AND PARENT SELF-PERCEPTIONS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to examine the attitudes toward mathematics of students in upper elementary school and middle school. Their perceptions were analyzed by grade level, gender, and in comparison to the attitudes of their parents (or primary care givers). What teachers, administrators, and support staff do in the classroom is a vital element in the development of attitudes and achievement in the area of mathematics for all students. When the child leaves the school environs, he or she is exposed to a myriad of behaviors, attitudes, and opportunities with respect to mathematics, both positive and negative. Since the earliest and most influential model of attitudes comes from a child’s parents, that will be one focus of this study. As children grow older, other factors influence attitudes, leading to the focal points of age and gender. For this research, children in grades 5 and 8, along with their parents, participated in a study to acquire information about their attitudes toward mathematics. The results of these surveys were compared to determine the proportional similarities of the number of responses made by parents and their children regarding their attitudes toward mathematics. A comparison of proportional relationships in responses was also examined comparing elementary and middle school children, and male and female students

Lumpectomy with or without postoperative radiotherapy for breast cancer with favourable prognostic features: results of a randomized study

The aim of this trial was to study the value of adding post-operative radiotherapy to lumpectomy in a subgroup of breast cancer patients with favourable patient-, tumour-, and treatment-related prognostic features. 152 women aged over 40 with unifocal breast cancer seen in preoperative mammography were randomly assigned to lumpectomy alone (no-XRT group) or to lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy to the ipsilateral breast (50 Gy given within 5 weeks, XRT group). All cancers were required to be invasive node-negative, smaller than 2 cm in diameter and well or moderately differentiated, to contain no extensive intraductal component, to be progesterone receptor-positive, DNA diploid, have S-phase fraction ≤7 and be excised with at least 1 cm margin. During a mean follow-up time of 6.7 years, 13 (18.1%) cancers recurred locally in the no-XRT and 6 (7.5%) in the XRT group (P = 0.03). There was no difference between the groups in the ultimate breast preservation rate (95.0% vs. 94.4% in XRT and no-XRT, respectively, P = 0.88), distant metastasis-free survival (P = 0.36), or 5-year cancer-specific survival (97.1% in XRT and 98.6 in no-XRT). Radiation therapy given after lumpectomy reduces the frequency of ipsilateral breast recurrences even in women with small breast cancer with several favourable clinical and biological features. However, the breast preservation rate may not increase due to more frequent use of salvage mastectomies in patients treated with postoperative radiotherapy. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

Cytogenetic features of human trophoblast cell lines SWAN-71 and 3A-subE

Immortalization of primary cells with telomerase is thought to maintain normal phenotypic properties and avoid chromosomal abnormalities and other cancer-associated changes that occur following simian virus 40 tumor antigen (SV40 Tag) induced immortalization. However, we report that the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT)-immortalized SWAN-71 trophoblast cell line has a near pentaploid 103∼119,XXXX[cp20] karyotype. Additionally, DNA typing analysis indicated that SWAN-71 cells have acquired microsatellite instability. In comparison, the post-crisis SV40-transformed trophoblast cell line 3A-subE was hypertriploid 69∼81,XX[cp20]. Both cell lines contained multiple specific clonal rearrangements. These findings emphasize the need to monitor for genetic instability in hTERT-immortalized cells

Salivary melatonin onset in youth at familial risk for bipolar disorder

    Get PDF
Melatonin secretion and polysomnography (PSG) were compared among a group of healthy adolescents who were at high familial risk for bipolar disorder (HR) and a second group at low familial risk (LR). Adolescent participants (n = 12) were a mean age 14 ± 2.3 years and included 8 females and 4 males. Saliva samples were collected under standardized condition light (red light) and following a 200 lux light exposure over two consecutive nights in a sleep laboratory. Red Light Melatonin onset (RLMO) was defined as saliva melatonin level exceeding the mean of the first 3 readings plus 2 standard deviations. Polysomnography was also completed during each night. HR youth, relative to LR, experienced a significantly earlier melatonin onset following 200 lux light exposure. Polysomnography revealed that LR youth, relative to HR, spent significantly more time in combined stages 3 and 4 (deep sleep) following red light exposure. Additionally, regardless of the group status (HR or LR), there was no significant difference in Red Light Melatonin Onset recorded at home or in the laboratory, implying its feasibility and reliability

Flourishing in nature: A review of the benefits of connecting with nature and its application as a wellbeing intervention

    Get PDF
From the increasing number of people living in urban areas to the continued degradation of the natural environment, many of us appear to be physically and psychologically disconnected from nature. We consider the theoretical explanations and present evidence for why this state of affairs might result in suboptimal levels of hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing by reviewing the large body of research on the mental health benefits of connecting with nature. The advantages of contact with nature as a potential wellbeing intervention are discussed, and examples of how this research is being applied to reconnect individuals to nature and improve wellbeing are given. We conclude by considering the limitations of, and proposing future directions for, research in this area. Overall, evidence suggests that connecting with nature is one path to flourishing in life
