    John Clare and place

This chapter tackles issues of place in the self-presentation and critical reception of John Clare, and pursues it across a number of axes. The argument centres on the placing of Clare both socio-economically and ‘naturally’, and limitations exerted upon perceptions of his work. Interrogating criticism this chapter finds a pervasive awkwardness especially in relation to issues of class and labour. It assesses the contemporary ‘placing’ of Clare, and seemingly unavoidable insensitivities to labour and poverty in the history industry, place-naming, and polemical ecocriticism. It assesses the ways Clare represents place – in poverty, in buildings, in nature – and, drawing on Michel de Certeau, considers the tactics Clare uses to negotiate his place. It pursues trajectories to ‘un-place’ Clare: the flight of fame in Clare’s response to Byron; and the flight of an early poem in songbooks and beyond, across the nineteenth century

'The Second Death': The making of an opera.

This dissertation is a pendant to my main submission, an opera in three acts entitled The Second Death. It is a discussion of my ideas on the wedding of words and music, with particular emphasis on the problems of framing a suitable language for musical setting in a dramatic context. Chapter One looks at 'words-for- music' in general: the different perspective given to composition when words are set; the aesthetic and technical consideration of writing words for music; the use of prose texts in musical setting; and words-for-music in the special context of an opera libretto. Chapter Two describes the background to the writing of The Second Death, the works that influenced me and the music I wrote leading up to its composition. Chapter Three considers the writing of the libretto, gives a synopsis of the plot, discusses the revisions I made and the reasons for them and concludes with a note about its sources. Chapter Four looks at the music: after a general note on musical styles and techniques, it goes on to make a brief technical analysis of the work, a "short guided tour" of the opera's musical imagery. The complete libretto is given as an Appendix

The IPRO 320 team is tasked with assisting Olympia Fields Country Club in making 3D models of their cottages and designing a bridge. Modeling all 26 cottages will necessitate the accurate collection of data from the cottages at the site. This will require the team to first survey the site and collect field data including measurements and digital photographs. After the data is collected, modeling of the cottages will start using computer software. This will be put into a presentable format for the country club. Also a publication is to be made on the process used in the collection of field data. The designing of the new bridge will serve as a Capstone requirement working with Robinson Engineering. Achieving this objective will require information from the site as well as an understanding of regulations involved in constructing a bridge. The model of the bridge will be presented to the country club as a possibility for replacing the existing deteriorating bridge. This document will give an extensive overview of the IPRO project. It will provide information on team members, details of the project procedure, and goals and expectations of the project. Work ethics and how to resolve team issues will be discussed. Also a brief history on Olympia Fields Country Club will be given.Deliverable
