Preliminary results of simulated vortex encounters by a twin-engine, commercial aircraft during final landing approach

    Get PDF
Piloted simulations of encounters with vortices of various ages and degrees of attenuation were performed with the Visual Motion Simulator. In the simulations, a twin engine, commercial transport on final approach, encountered the modeled vortices of a four engine, wide body, commercial transport. The data show the effect of vortex age and attenuation on the severity of the initial upset, as well as the effect of the vortex encounters on the landing capability

Understanding the British Columbia Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Cluster: A Case Study of Public Laboratories and Private Research

    Get PDF
This study looks at the cluster using a structured approach that tests clusters against indicators of current conditions and current performance. It includes the results of an extensive interview program and survey of professionals in the field, both within the cluster and elsewhere. The results give a clear picture of a cluster that has two major components – hydrogen based industries and fuel cell technologies, which are both global in reach and potential

Beyond Heroes & Role Models: Using Biographies to Develop Young Change Agents

    Get PDF
Reading, writing, and discussing biographies provide unique opportunities for teachers and students. Critical thinking can be developed through questioning, predicting, and analyzing various biographical mediums--texts, photographs and illustrations, book reviews, websites, films, news articles, etc.--to learn more about an individual\u27s life experiences and choices. Decision making skills can be enhanced when students juxtapose their perceptions of heroes and role models to that of a change agent, even considering how their own life experiences and choices may be contributing to larger actions of change. In this article, the authors discuss six biographies that could be used with young people in the elementary classroom to study change agents. The authors carefully selected and organized their literary choices into four categories: (1) familiar historical figures, (2) familiar living persons, (3) less familiar figures, and finally (4) students and teachers themselves--because they can act as change agents today on a local and personal level

    Quantum Error Correction of Observables

A formalism for quantum error correction based on operator algebras was introduced in [1] via consideration of the Heisenberg picture for quantum dynamics. The resulting theory allows for the correction of hybrid quantum-classical information and does not require an encoded state to be entirely in one of the corresponding subspaces or subsystems. Here, we provide detailed proofs for the results of [1], derive a number of new results, and we elucidate key points with expanded discussions. We also present several examples and indicate how the theory can be extended to operator spaces and general positive operator-valued measures.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure, preprint versio

The Economics of Education: A Case Study of Wachusett Regional High School

[Introduction]Over two thousand years ago, Aristotle said, “the fate of empires depends on the education of youth.” (Peter 1977: 173). This study will attempt to determine some of the important factors about the economics of high school education in the United States. Schools exist to serve children, their parents, and society at large, and these three groups do not always have identical interests. Therefore, education has many goals besides the obvious one of increased cognitive ability, and the best methods for achieving the desired effects have not been agreed upon. Economists label the process by which education creates these outcomes the education production function; this model attempts to predict the effects of a given change in resources on student outcomes. However, the educational process involves many inputs and outputs, and economists have not been able to specify all of them yet. Another area of contention in the economics of education is economies of scale. Economists have been arguing for years that economies of scale exist in the provision of high school education, but the fear that these large schools do not provide the same quality of education as their smaller counterparts has spurred a new debate. This paper will attempt to clarify various educational theories and elucidate research findings. Chapter One is about the economic and social effects of education, Chapter Two discusses economies of scale in high schools, and Chapter Three explains the education production function. The last chapter, Chapter Four, is a case study of one school district in central Massachusetts, the Wachusett Regional School District. By focusing on Wachusett, we will see that the findings of researchers are not the only factors voters consider when making decisions that will affect the youth of their area. Because of all the factors that vary from school to school, it is difficult to specify exactly what is important for providing education

Fabrication of Microfluidic Devices with Integrated Electronic Components via Dual Extrusion-Based 3D Printing

    Get PDF
Microfluidics channels as small as 50 ÎĽm in width were produced via extrusionbased 3D printing. Multi-layered, multi-electrode devices were fabricated with inlaid conductive filament. Electrodes were used for simple electroanalysis of proteins. Prototyping of microfluidics devices via extrusion-based 3D printing may ultimately allow for an easy, cost-effective, high-throughput, high-resolution, and single-step method of rapidly prototyping electronic microfluidic devices, principally suited for use in diagnostics applications
