    Optical characteristics of Nd:YAG optics and distortions at high power

    The intensity profile and beam caustics of a fiber coupled high power Nd:YAG laser beam through a lens system are studied. The thermal lensing effect and its influence on the beam profile and focal position are discussed. Asymmetry of the intensity profile in planes above and below the focal plane is demonstrated. Also the influence of small pollutions on the protective window is explained. Three different methods are used to measure the occurrence\ud of thermal lensing and quantify these effects

    Authority Presence and the Effect on Prejudice

    The current study analyzed the relationship between an authority figure\u27s presence and the prevalence of prejudice when sentencing criminals. Eighteen undergraduate students (5 men and 13 women) aged 18 to 21 years, volunteered to participate in the study. Each participant completed the Implicit Association Test (lAT) and completed four fictitious criminal sentences. Significant support was not found for the current hypothesis, although more participants showed prejudice when the authority figure was absent compared to when the individual was present.Women showed prejudicial behavior more often then men when the authority figure was absent. Participants had a tendency to sentence longer for different races and for the crime involving homicide when compared to a rape crime

    Improving sustainability through intelligent cargo and adaptive decision making

    In the current society, logistics is faced with the challenge to meet more stringent sustainability goals. Shippers and transport service providers both aim to reduce the carbon footprint of their logistic operations. To do so, optimal use of logistics resources and physical infrastructure should be aimed for. An adaptive decision making process for the selection of a specific transport modality, transport provider and timeslot (aimed at minimisation of the carbon footprint) enables shippers to achieve this. This requires shippers to have access to up-to-date capacity information from transport providers (e.g. current and scheduled loading status of the various transport means and information on carbon footprint) and traffic information (e.g. city logistics and current traffic information). A prerequisite is an adequate infrastructure for collaboration and open exchange of information between the various stakeholders in the logistics value chain to obtain the up-to-date information. This paper gives a view on how such an advanced information infrastructure can be realised, currently being developed within the EU iCargo project. The paper describes a reference logistics value chain, including business benefits for each of the roles in the logistics value chain of aiming for sustainability. A case analysis is presented that reflects a practical situation in which the various roles collaborate and exchange information for realizing sustainability goals, using adaptive decision making for selecting a transport modality, transport provider, and timeslot.     Extracorporeal bullet trajectory determination from scanned phantoms with bullet defects

    Shots with two different calibres (0.32 Auto and 9 mm Luger) were fired through phantoms that simulated human torsos, mounted on undercarriages with witness panels. The perforated phantoms were scanned with computed tomography (Siemens) using 80 kV and 140 kV and a slice thickness of 1 mm. The intracorporeal trajectories in the phantoms were compared to the known extracorporeal trajectories, derived from the perforations in witness panels. The discrepancy between the intracorporeal and extracorporeal trajectories, denoted as the absolute angle, was calculated for the trajectories before (front) and after (rear) the phantoms. Mean absolute angles at the front were lower than at the rear (2.27° vs. 4.54°) and the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The results of the study imply that the line between the entrance and the exit wound in a scanned victim can be extended to the extracorporeal bullet trajectory leading towards the entrance wound. The absolute angles presented in this study give an impression of the expected errors with the two calibres. This can be helpful in shooting investigations to assess the position of the shooter from entrance and exit wounds in a scanned victim

    Conditional choice modelling of time allocation among spouses in transport settings : theory and empirical findings

    As part of a wider rule-based model of activity behaviour, this paper explores the possibility to build a suite of linked conditional choice models to predict the amount of time spouses in a household spend on a set of activities together and alone. First, a choice model is used to predict the probability and hence the amount of time the spouses spend together and alone. Conditional on the outcome of this choice model, a second model predicts the amount of time that is spent by each spouse separately on a set of activities, as a function of socio-demographics, car availability and work status. The model is estimated using a small sample in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands. The results indicate the model to have face validity. Rho-square values are also high

    The significance of the subject of the present study-the cost of finding, developing and producing petroleum-can be better understood by placing it against a summary view of the supply situation in the postwar world. The most striking fact is the appearance of vast new reserves of oil in various parts of the world. Earlier concern over conservation was aroused by the fear of depletion of the available supply. Taking a long view, this possibility is not to be dismissed. But in recent years the practical problems of the industry, and of public policy toward it, are of a different sort. The capacity of the industry to produce in the countries of the free world greatly exceeds the current rates of consumption. From the sellers\u27 point of view, at least, it seems self-evident that too much oil exists today

    Symplectic Quantization of Open Strings and Noncommutativity in Branes

    We show how to translate boundary conditions into constraints in the symplectic quantization method by an appropriate choice of generalized variables. This way the symplectic quantization of an open string attached to a brane in the presence of an antisymmetric background field reproduces the non commutativity of the brane coordinates.Comment: We included a comparison with previous results obtained from Dirac quantization, emphasizing the fact that in the symplectic case the boundary conditions, that lead to the non commutativity, show up from the direct application of the standard method.     Entre las posibles secuelas de un accidente nuclear hay que contar con la contaminación radiactiva a medio y largo plazo de los sistemas acuáticos de agua dulce. Frente a ese problema, es fundamental disponer de una evaluación realista del impacto radiológico, ecológico, social y económico de las posibles estrategias de gestión, para poder adoptar las decisiones más convenientes de forma racional. MOIRA es un sistema de ayuda a la decisión desarrollado en el curso de los Programas Marco Europeos con participación de la UPM, que ha sido mejorado y adaptado a los emplazamientos nucleares españoles en los últimos años en el contexto del Proyecto ISIDRO, patrocinado por el Consejo de Seguridad Nuclear, con la participación del CIEMAT y la UPM. El trabajo se centra en esos avances, principalmente relacionados con los sistemas hidráulicos complejos como los de los ríos Tajo, Ebro y Júcar, en los que se ubican varias centrales nucleares españolas

    How to Build the Thermofield Double State

    Given two copies of any quantum mechanical system, one may want to prepare them in the thermofield double state for the purpose of studying thermal physics or black holes. However, the thermofield double is a unique entangled pure state and may be difficult to prepare. We propose a local interacting Hamiltonian for the combined system whose ground state is approximately the thermofield double. The energy gap for this Hamiltonian is of order the temperature.
