In this study, an earlier version of the Support for Family Caregivers intervention is improved, implemented and evaluated. The intervention consists of staff training and a toolkit with supportive materials for stakeholders. The materials comprise an implementation guide, a practical guide and a brochure for healthcare professionals (doctors, nursing staff, managers, policy and quality officers) on providing support and grief and bereavement care, and an information brochure for family caregivers about self-care, obtaining information and referral for additional support. Family caregivers can be relatives and close relations. such as friends and neighbors. The toolkit motivates and supports professional caregivers to be aware of the needs of family caregivers of patients with a life-limiting condition or frailty both pre-death and in bereavement, to provide them with appropriate care, and to encourage family caregivers to take good care of themselves and draw attention to their own needs. The aim of the intervention is that healthcare professionals provide all family members, including those with limited health skills and migrant backgrounds, with care that meets their needs when their loved one is ill and after death. To this end, the earlier version of the Support for Family Caregivers toolkit is l further developed and will be implemented in home care, hospices, hospitals and nursing homes along with the training in the western region of the Netherlands. We will study whether the intervention leads to better care for family caregivers provided by health care professionals. Secondary outcomes are the satisfaction of family caregivers with the care they received before and after the death of their loved one, and the needs of the care professionals regarding the provision of support and grief and bereavement care. In addition, we will assess the preconditions for implementing the toolkit in organizations, the usability and accessibility of the toolkit and inhibiting and facilitating factors for the use of the toolkit
