    Techniques of futuring: On how imagined futures become socially performative

    The concept of the future is re-emerging as an urgent topic on the academic agenda. In this article, we focus on the ‘politics of the future’: the social processes and practices that allow particular imagined futures to become socially performative. Acknowledging that the performativity of such imagined futures is well-understood, we argue that how particular visions come about and why they become performative is underexplained. Drawing on constructivist sociological theory, this article aims to fill (part of) this gap by exploring the question ‘how do imagined futures become socially performative’? In doing so, the article has three aims to (1) identify the leading social–theoretical work on the future; (2) conceptualize the relationship of the imagination of the future with social practices and the performance of reality; (3) provide a theoretical framework explaining how images of the future become performative, using the concepts ‘techniques of futuring’ and ‘dramaturgical regime’

    Axion-like particles as ultra high energy cosmic rays?

    If Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) with E>4 10^{19} eV originate from BL Lacertae at cosmological distances as suggested by recent studies, the absence of the GZK cutoff can not be reconciled with Standard-Model particle properties. Axions would escape the GZK cutoff, but even the coherent conversion and back-conversion between photons and axions in large-scale magnetic fields is not enough to produce the required flux. However, one may construct models of other novel (pseudo)scalar neutral particles with properties that would allow for sufficient rates of particle production in the source and shower production in the atmosphere to explain the observations.     Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays from Neutrino Emitting Acceleration Sources?

    We demonstrate by numerical flux calculations that neutrino beams producing the observed highest energy cosmic rays by weak interactions with the relic neutrino background require a non-uniform distribution of sources. Such sources have to accelerate protons at least up to 10^{23} eV, have to be opaque to their primary protons, and should emit the secondary photons unavoidably produced together with the neutrinos only in the sub-MeV region to avoid conflict with the diffuse gamma-ray background measured by the EGRET experiment. Even if such a source class exists, the resulting large uncertainties in the parameters involved in this scenario does currently not allow to extract any meaningful information on absolute neutrino masses.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, RevTeX styl

    Linear Responses in Time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Method with Gogny Interaction

    A numerical method to integrate the time-dependent Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (TDHFB) equations with Gogny interaction is proposed. The feasibility of the TDHFB code is illustrated by the conservation of the energy, particle numbers, and center-of-mass in the small amplitude vibrations of oxygen 20. The TDHFB code is applied to the isoscalar quadrupole and/or isovector dipole vibrations in the linear (small amplitude) region in oxygen isotopes (masses A = 18,20,22 and 24), titanium isotopes (A = 44,50,52 and 54), neon isotope (A = 26), and magnesium isotopes (A = 24 and 34). The isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole strength functions are calculated from the expectation values of the isoscalar quadrupole and isovector dipole moments.Comment: 10 pages, 13 figure

    Stable caloric intake and continued virologic suppression for HIV-positive antiretroviral treatment-experienced women after switching to a single-Tablet regimen of emtricitabine, rilpivirine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate

    Benefits of switching to a single-Tablet regimen (STR) of emtricitabine/rilpivirine/tenofovir (FTC/RPV/TDF) in virologically suppressed antiretroviral treatment (ART) experienced HIV-positive women include pregnancy category B rating and lack of clinically significant drug interactions between RPV and oral contraceptives. Unfortunately, studies involving switching to FTC/RPV/TDF enrolled fewer than 25% women. We undertook this 48-week study to assess the ability of virologically suppressed HIV-positive women switching to RPV STR to remain virologically suppressed and comply with the caloric intake requirement. HIV-positive women on ART with viral load <50 c/mL for 6 months before study entry and no known resistance to FTC, TDF, or RPV were enrolled and switched to STR RPV/FTC/TDF. Caloric intake (≥400 kcal) compliance and concurrency with oral STR RPV/FTC/TDF were evaluated with a 3-day food diary, which was validated by obtaining participant's caloric consumption through phone calls on randomly chosen dates. For each 3-day food diary, the daily median caloric intake and median value for each macronutrient consumed concurrent with FTC/RPV/TDF were computed. Medication adherence was measured using a visual analog scale. We enrolled 33 women, 73% of whom were African American. At week 48, virologic suppression (HIV RNA <40 c/mL) was maintained in 96% of women, including those (n = 4) who reported imperfect ART adherence. The daily median caloric intake concurrent with FTC/RPV/TDF was 820 kcal by food diary and 677 kcal by random phone call. Median kcal intake (food diary) did not change significantly from baseline (684 kcal) to week 48 (820 kcal); median change 102 kcal, p = .15. Women who reported noncompliance with a ≥400 kcal meal did not experience virologic failure. Significant concordance between caloric adherence and virologic suppression was not detected. Our study demonstrated that HIV-positive women who switched to STR FTC/RPV/TDF continued to experience virologic suppression and were readily able to comply with the recommended caloric intake requirement

    Genomic epidemiology of escherichia coli isolates from a tertiary referral center in lilongwe, Malawi

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat, including in sub-Saharan Africa. However, little is known about the genetics of resistant bacteria in the region. In Malawi, there is growing concern about increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance to most empirically used antimicrobials. The highly drug resistant Escherichia coli sequence type (ST) 131, which is associated with the extended spectrum β-lactamase blaCTX-M-15, has been increasing in prevalence globally. Previous data from isolates collected between 2006 and 2013 in southern Malawi have revealed the presence of ST131 and the blaCTX-M-15 gene in the country. We performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) of 58 clinical E. coli isolates at Kamuzu Central Hospital, a tertiary care centre in central Malawi, collected from 2012 to 2018. We used Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) sequencing, which was performed in Malawi. We show that ST131 is observed more often (14.9% increasing to 32.8%) and that the blaCTX-M-15 gene is occurring at a higher frequency (21.3% increasing to 44.8%). Phylogenetics indicates that isolates are highly related between the central and southern geographic regions and confirms that ST131 isolates are contained in a single group. All AMR genes, including blaCTX-M-15, were widely distributed across sequence types. We also identified an increased number of ST410 isolates, which in this study tend to carry a plasmid-located copy of blaCTX-M-15 gene at a higher frequency than blaCTX-M-15 occurs in ST131. This study confirms the expanding nature of ST131 and the wide distribution of the blaCTX-M-15 gene in Malawi. We also highlight the feasibility of conducting longitudinal genomic epidemiology studies of important bacteria with the sequencing done on site using a nanopore platform that requires minimal infrastructure

    Environmental modifiers of RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine efficacy in Lilongwe, Malawi

    Background: RTS,S/AS01 is the first vaccine against malaria to undergo pilot implementation, beginning in 2019 and vaccinating 360,000 children per year in Malawi, Ghana, and Kenya. The four-dose vaccine is given as a primary three-dose series with a fourth dose given approximately 18 months later. The efficacy of RTS,S/AS01 was variable among the 11 sites participating in the 2009-2014 phase III trial (MALARIA-055, NCT00866619), possibly due to differences in transmission intensity. However, a within-site examination of environmental factors related to transmission intensity and their impact on vaccine efficacy has yet to be conducted. Methods: We implemented the phase III RTS,S/AS01 trial at the Malawi site, which enrolled 1578 infants (6-12 weeks) and children (5-17 months) living in the Lilongwe District in Central Malawi and followed them for 3 years between 2009 and 2014. A global positioning system survey and an ecological questionnaire were conducted to collect participant household locations and characteristics, while additional data on background malaria prevalence were obtained from a concurrent Malaria Transmission Intensity (MTI) survey. Negative binomial regression models were used to assess whether the efficacy of the vaccine varied by estimated background malaria prevalence, household roof type, or amount of nearby vegetation. Results: Vaccine efficacy did not significantly vary by estimated malaria prevalence or by roof type. However, increased vegetation cover was associated with an increase in the efficacy of the three-dose primary RTS,S/AS01 series in the 18 months before the fourth dose and a decrease in the efficacy of the primary vaccine series in the second 18 months following, if the fourth dose was not given. Vegetation cover did not alter the efficacy of the fourth dose in a statistically or practically significant manner. Conclusions: Vegetation coverage in this study site might be a proxy for nearness to rivers or branching, shallow wetlands called "dambos"which could serve as breeding sites for mosquitoes. We observed statistically significant modification of the efficacy of RTS,S/AS01 by forest cover, suggesting that initial vaccine efficacy and the importance of the fourth dose varies based on ecological context.     Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Fluxes and Their Constraints

    Applying our recently developed propagation code we review extragalactic neutrino fluxes above 10^{14} eV in various scenarios and how they are constrained by current data. We specifically identify scenarios in which the cosmogenic neutrino flux, produced by pion production of ultra high energy cosmic rays outside their sources, is considerably higher than the "Waxman-Bahcall bound". This is easy to achieve for sources with hard injection spectra and luminosities that were higher in the past. Such fluxes would significantly increase the chances to detect ultra-high energy neutrinos with experiments currently under construction or in the proposal stage.Comment: 11 pages, 15 figures, version published in Phys.Rev.
