    Small Business Survival in a Resort Town and Their Views on Location, Marketing, and Challenges of Doing Business

    This research was an exploratory survey of small businesses in Breckenridge Colorado to determine how important location was to their businesses, their use of traditional marketing, and their challenges surviving in a resort town. The survey covered a variety of businesses and found that the group of retail, entertainment, and food services was very reliant on tourism and therefore very concerned about their location. This group’s mean reliance on tourism was higher than the sample mean. The results are not surprising, but they do emphasize this group’s focus on location. The results need to be verified with a larger sample size or the use of small sample methods. What was surprising was this group’s use of not just location but a mix of traditional marketing and advertising techniques to gain customer recognition. Also surprising were their comments that survival in a resort town was challenging given internet competition, the difficulty of finding and retaining motivated employees, and the myriad of government regulations they faced

    High Temperature Life Testing of 80Ni-20Cr Wire in a Simulated Mars Atmosphere for the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) Instrument Suite Gas Processing System (GPS) Carbon Dioxide Scrubber

    In support of the GPS for the SAM instrument suite built by NASA/GSFC, a life test facility was developed to test the suitability of 80Ni-20Cr alloy wire, 0.0142 cm diameter, for use as a heater element for the carbon dioxide scrubber. The element would be required to operate at 1000 C in order to attain the 800 C required for regeneration of the getter. The element also would need to operate in the Mars atmosphere, which consists mostly of CO2 at pressures between 4 and 12 torr. Data on the high temperature degradation mechanism of 80Ni- 20Cr in low pressure CO2, coupled with the effects of thermal cycling, were unknown. In addition, the influence of work hardening of the wire during assembly and the potential for catastrophic grain growth also were unknown. Verification of the element reliability as defined by the mission goals required the construction of a test facility that would accurately simulate the duty cycles in a simulated Mars atmosphere.     The transition to parenthood in obstetrics: Enhancing prenatal care for 2-generation impact

    Obstetrics, the specialty overseeing infant and parent health before birth, could be expanded to address the interrelated areas of parents\u27 prenatal impact on children\u27s brain development and their own psychosocial needs during a time of immense change and neuroplasticity. Obstetrics is primed for the shift that is happening in pediatrics, which is moving from its traditional focus on physical health to a coordinated, whole-child, 2- or multigeneration approach. Pediatric care now includes developmental screening, parenting education, parent coaching, access to developmental specialists, brain-building caregiving skills, linkages to community resources, and tiered interventions with psychologists. Drawing on decades of developmental origins of health and disease research highlighting the prenatal beginnings of future health and new studies on the transition to parenthood describing adult development from pregnancy to early postpartum, we have proposed that, similar to pediatrics, the integration of education and intervention strategies into the prenatal care ecosystem should be tested for its potential to improve child cognitive and social-emotional development and parental mental health. Pediatric care programs can serve as models of change for the systematic development, testing and, incorporation of new content into prenatal care as universal, first-tier treatment and evidenced-based, triaged interventions according to the level of need. To promote optimal beginnings for the whole family, we have proposed an augmented prenatal care ecosystem that aligns with, and could build on, current major efforts to enhance perinatal care individualization through consideration of medical, social, and structural determinants of health

    Complementarity of ultrasound and fluorescence imaging in an orthotopic mouse model of pancreatic cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pancreatic cancer is a devastating disease characterized by dismal 5-year survival rates and limited treatment options. In an effort to provide useful models for preclinical evaluation of new experimental therapeutics, we and others have developed orthotopic mouse models of pancreatic cancer. The utility of these models for pre-clinical testing is dependent upon quantitative, noninvasive methods for monitoring <it>in vivo </it>tumor progression in real time. Toward this goal, we performed whole-body fluorescence imaging and ultrasound imaging to evaluate and to compare these noninvasive imaging modalities for assessing tumor burden and tumor progression in an orthotopic mouse model of pancreatic cancer.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The human pancreatic cancer cell line XPA-1, engineered for stable, high-level expression of red fluorescent protein (RFP), was implanted into the pancreas of nude mice using orthotopic implantation. The tumors were allowed to grow over a period of one to several weeks during which time the mice were imaged using both fluorescence imaging and ultrasound imaging to measure tumor burden and to monitor tumor growth.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Whole-body fluorescence imaging and ultrasound imaging both allowed for the visualization and measurement of orthotopic pancreatic tumor implants <it>in vivo</it>. The imaging sessions were well-tolerated by the mice and yielded data which correlated well in the quantitative assessment of tumor burden. Whole-body fluorescence and two-dimensional ultrasound imaging showed a strong correlation for measurement of tumor size over a range of tumor sizes (R<sup>2 </sup>= 0.6627, P = 0.003 for an exposure time of 67 msec and R<sup>2 </sup>= 0.6553, P = 0.003 for an exposure time of 120 msec).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings suggest a complementary role for fluorescence imaging and ultrasound imaging in assessing tumor burden and tumor progression in orthotopic mouse models of human cancer.</p

    Plasma, salivary, and urinary oxytocin in anorexia nervosa: A pilot study

    While oxytocin (OT) has the potential to be an informative biomarker of social functioning in patients with eating disorders, the burden of invasive blood draws or lumbar punctures limits OT study. Salivary and urinary OT measurements may be advantageous, as they require less invasive sampling techniques which could be conducted in a wider variety of settings. Yet, the degree to which the concentration of OT in these fluids is correlated with blood levels is uncertain, as is the impact of vomiting on salivary secretion of OT. Therefore, we compared contemporaneously sampled OT concentration in blood, saliva, and urine from twenty women acutely ill with anorexia nervosa. Salivary OT was positively correlated with plasma OT in patients with no history of self-induced vomiting(r=0.89), but correlation was lower in those with recent history of self-induced vomiting(r=0.42). Urinary and plasma OT were not well-correlated(r=0.13), suggesting preliminarily that collection of plasma OT remains the method of choice. Self-induced vomiting in eating disorders may limit the applicability of salivary sampling for OT

    A Nutritional Formulation for Cognitive Performance and Mood in Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Phase II Multi-site Randomized Trial with an Open-label Extension

    Background: It is increasingly recognized that interventions for dementia must shift towards prevention to obtain maximal efficacy and any significant degree of disease modification. Nutritional supplementation with single agents has shown varied results, suggesting the need for combinatorial intervention. Methods: We conducted a 3-month, randomized, multi-site, phase II study in which 141 individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and 34 individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment received a nutraceutical formulation (NF; folate, alpha-tocopherol, B12, S-adenosyl methioinine, N-acetyl cysteine, acetyl-L-carnitine) or indistinguishable placebo under double-blind conditions, followed by an open-label extension in which all individuals received NF for a total of 1yr. An additional 38 individuals with AD received NF under open-label conditions from baseline for 1yr. The primary outcome was defined as cognitive performance. Secondary outcomes were defined as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and activities of daily living. Results: Participants randomized to NF improved statistically within 3 months in cognitive performance as ascertained by Clox-1 and the Dementia Rating Scale, and their caregivers reported improvement in Neuropsychiatric Inventory. Participants receiving NF either continued to improve or maintained their baseline performance during open-label extensions. Participants randomized to placebo did not improve, but during open-label extensions displayed similar improvement within 3 months to that of participants initially randomized to NF. Caregivers reported no change in Activities of Daily Living for either cohort. Conclusions: These findings confirm and extend prior phase I studies in which NF improved or maintained cognitive performance and behavioral symptoms for individuals with AD, and improved cognitive performance for community-dwelling individuals without dementia. In published studies with transgenic mice NF reduced PS-1 expression, beta and gamma secretase activity, Abeta deposits, phospho-tau, homocysteine and oxidative damage, and increased acetylcholine and glutathione. This comprehensive impact of NF on AD-related neuropathology supports the possibility that NF may harbor disease-modifying properties

    Maternal eating disorders influence sex ratio at birth

    We explored sex ratio at birth, defined as the proportion of male live births, in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and eating disorders not otherwise specified-purging type (EDNOS-P) relative to a referent group in a large population based sample of 38,340 pregnant women in Norway. Poisson regressions were adjusted for mother’s age, pre-pregnancy BMI, lifetime smoking status, maternal education, income, marital status, gestational age, and parity. Lower proportions of male live births were observed in the anorexia and bulimia groups, while binge eating disorder and EDNOS-P were associated with a higher proportion of male births. These data suggest that maternal eating disorders may influence offspring sex and that the direction of effect may vary by eating disorder subtype. If confirmed, this finding could provide evidence in formulating hypotheses regarding the consequences of eating disorders and determinants of sex ratio at birth

    A Psychometric Assessment of Health Literacy Measures among Youth in a Residential Treatment Setting

    Minimal research has focused on the health literacy status of adolescents, and few measures have been validated among specific subgroups of youth. One such group is youth living in residential treatment centers. It is currently unknown how well this group is able to read, understand, and use health-related information. The purpose of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of three widely-used health literacy measures among a group of youth at a large residential care facility located in Omaha, NE. Results indicate that all measures are psychometrically adequate for use among this population. Study limitations and implications are provided
