New obstructions to symplectic embeddings
In this paper we establish new restrictions on symplectic embeddings of
certain convex domains into symplectic vector spaces. These restrictions are
stronger than those implied by the Ekeland-Hofer capacities. By refining an

Electron transport in Coulomb- and tunnel-coupled one-dimensional systems
We develop a linear theory of electron transport for a system of two
identical quantum wires in a wide range of the wire length L, unifying both the
ballistic and diffusive transport regimes. The microscopic model, involving the
interaction of electrons with each other and with bulk acoustical phonons
allows a reduction of the quantum kinetic equation to a set of coupled
equations for the local chemical potentials for forward- and backward-moving
electrons in the wires. As an application of the general solution of these
equations, we consider different kinds of electrical contacts to the
double-wire system and calculate the direct resistance, the transresistance, in
the presence of tunneling and Coulomb drag, and the tunneling resistance. If L
is smaller than the backscattering length l_P, both the tunneling and the drag
lead to a negative transresistance, while in the diffusive regime (L >>l_P) the
tunneling opposes the drag and leads to a positive transresistance. If L is
smaller than the phase-breaking length, the tunneling leads to interference

Calcium and Rhizodermal Differentiation in Primary Maize Roots
Rhizodermal differentiation of maize (Zea mays L. cv. LG 11) roots cultured in humid air was influenced by a pretreatment for 2 h in CaCl2 or CaSO4 solutions. This increased the number of hair-producing roots and the density of hairs. Ethylene glycol-bis-(β-aminoethyl ether)N,N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA) was inhibitory. Root hairs emerged in the part of the cell nearer to the tip. Trichoblasts were shorter and elongated more slowly than atrichoblasts. Algebraic Torsion in Contact Manifolds
We extract a nonnegative integer-valued invariant, which we call the "order
of algebraic torsion", from the Symplectic Field Theory of a closed contact
manifold, and show that its finiteness gives obstructions to the existence of
symplectic fillings and exact symplectic cobordisms. A contact manifold has
algebraic torsion of order zero if and only if it is algebraically overtwisted
(i.e. has trivial contact homology), and any contact 3-manifold with positive
Giroux torsion has algebraic torsion of order one (though the converse is not
true). We also construct examples for each nonnegative k of contact 3-manifolds
that have algebraic torsion of order k but not k - 1, and derive consequences
for contact surgeries on such manifolds. The appendix by Michael Hutchings
gives an alternative proof of our cobordism obstructions in dimension three

PFAPA syndrome: a review on treatment and outcome.
The syndrome of periodic fever, aphthous stomatitis, pharyngitis and cervical adenitis (PFAPA syndrome) is the most common cause of periodic fever in childhood. The current pharmacological treatment includes corticosteroids, which usually are efficacious in the management of fever episodes, colchicine, for the prophylaxis of febrile episodes, and other medication for which efficacy has not been proven so far. Tonsillectomy is an option for selected patients. Usually PFAPA syndrome resolves during adolescence, but there is increasing evidence that this condition may persist into adulthood
Crystals for high-energy calorimetry in extreme environments
Crystals are used as a homogeneous calorimetric medium in many high-energy
physics experiments. For some experiments, performance has to be ensured in
very difficult operating conditions, like a high radiation environment, very
large particle fluxes, high collision rates, placing constraints on response
and readout time. An overview is presented of recent achievements in the field,
with particular attention given to the performance of Lead Tungstate (PWO)

Displacement energy of unit disk cotangent bundles
We give an upper bound of a Hamiltonian displacement energy of a unit disk
cotangent bundle in a cotangent bundle , when the base manifold
is an open Riemannian manifold. Our main result is that the displacement
energy is not greater than , where is the inner radius of ,
and is a dimensional constant. As an immediate application, we study
symplectic embedding problems of unit disk cotangent bundles. Moreover,
combined with results in symplectic geometry, our main result shows the

Incoherent Transport through Molecules on Silicon in the vicinity of a Dangling Bond
We theoretically study the effect of a localized unpaired dangling bond (DB)
on occupied molecular orbital conduction through a styrene molecule bonded to a
n++ H:Si(001)-(2x1) surface. For molecules relatively far from the DB, we find
good agreement with the reported experiment using a model that accounts for the
electrostatic contribution of the DB, provided we include some dephasing due to
low lying phonon modes. However, for molecules within 10 angstrom to the DB, we
have to include electronic contribution as well along with higher dephasing to

Reichenbach's Common Cause Principle in Algebraic Quantum Field Theory with Locally Finite Degrees of Freedom
In the paper it will be shown that Reichenbach's Weak Common Cause Principle
is not valid in algebraic quantum field theory with locally finite degrees of
freedom in general. Namely, for any pair of projections A and B supported in
spacelike separated double cones O(a) and O(b), respectively, a correlating
state can be given for which there is no nontrivial common cause (system)
located in the union of the backward light cones of O(a) and O(b) and commuting
with the both A and B. Since noncommuting common cause solutions are presented
in these states the abandonment of commutativity can modulate this result:
