    Economic Benefits of Sustainable, Forage-Based Cattle Systems in Colombia and Nicaragua

    Forage-based cattle systems play a key role in rural economies of developing countries in terms of food security and poverty alleviation, particularly in tropical Latin America. However, they are often related to being a major cause of negative environmental impacts by contributing to increased greenhouse gas emissions, land degradation, and the reduction of biodiversity. Significant resources have been allocated to research and development in forage material improvement, including selection and breeding. A broad range of improved materials were released by private and public sector actors showing superior characteristics in terms of productivity and environmental impacts compared to native or naturalized materials. Profitability is a fundamental attribute to incentivize or generate adoption of new systems by cattle producers, but this information is often not available to the livestock producer or the extension agents supporting decision-making processes. This research provides an overview on the economic viability of integrating different improved forage varieties in sustainably intensified cattle production systems in Colombia and Nicaragua. Our evaluations show that, despite higher establishment and management costs, integrating improved forage technologies (and management practices) in sustainably intensified cattle systems, either as monoculture, grass-legume associations, silvo-pastoral systems, or in combination with improved management strategies (e.g., intensive, or rotational grazing), not only make sense from the environmental and productive perspectives but also in terms of economic viability. In nearly all evaluated scenarios, the economic indicators improve by integrating improved forage technologies. Strong increases were observed for the following indicators: a) net income, b) unit profit margin, c) Net Present Value, d) Internal Rate of Return, and f) benefit-cost ratio. Strong decreases were observed for the following indicators: a) unit production cost, b) risk of obtaining economic loss, c) payback time, d) minimum area required for a profitable system, and e) sensitivity of the system to external shocks. This information will help cattle producers, extensionists and policymakers to make more holistic and informed land-use decisions that include productive, environmental, economic, and social benefits, and by this contributes to the broader adoption of more sustainable production systems

    Interface Tension in Quenched QCD

    We calculate the tension σ\sigma of the interface between the confined and deconfined phases by the histogram method in SU(3) lattice gauge theory for temporal extents of 4 and 6 using the recent high-statistics data by QCDPAX collaboration. The results are σ/Tc3=0.0292(22)\sigma/T_c^3 = 0.0292(22) and 0.0218(33) for Nt=4N_t=4 and 6, respectively. The ratio σ/Tc3\sigma/T_c^3 shows a scaling violation similar to that already observed for the latent heat \latent. However, we find that the physically interesting dimensionless combinations (\sigma^{3}/\latent^2 T)^{1/2} and \sigma T/ \latent scale within the statistical errors.Comment: 13 pages with 2 PostScript figures, LaTeX, CERN-TH.6798/93, AZPH-TH/93-04, UTHEP-25

    Scaling Study of Pure Gauge Lattice QCD by Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Method

    The scaling behavior of pure gauge SU(3) in the region β=5.857.60\beta=5.85 - 7.60 is examined by a Monte Carlo Renormalization Group analysis. The coupling shifts induced by factor 2 blocking are measured both on 324^4 and 164^4 lattices with high statistics. A systematic deviation from naive 2-loop scaling is clearly seen. The mean field and effective coupling constant schemes explain part, but not all of the deviation. It can be accounted for by a suitable change of coupling constant, including a correction term O(g7){\cal O}(g^7) in the 2-loop lattice β\beta-function. Based on this improvement, σ/ΛMSnf=0\sqrt{\sigma}/\Lambda_{\overline {MS}}^{n_f=0} is estimated to be 2.2(±0.1)2.2(\pm 0.1) from the analysis of the string tension σ\sigma.Comment: 4 pages of A4 format including 7-postscript figure

    The nature of the continuum limit in the 2D RP2RP^2 gauge model

    The RP(2) gauge model is studied in 2D. We use Monte-Carlo renormalization techniques for blocking the mean spin-spin interaction, , and the mean gauge field plaquette, . The presence of the O(3) renormalized trajectory is verified and is consistent with the known three-loop beta-function. The first-order `vorticity' transition observed by Solomon et al. is confirmed, and the location of the terminating critical point is established. New scaling flows in (,) are observed associated with a large exponent kappa in the range 4~5. The scaling flows give rise to a strong cross-over effect between regions of high and low vorticity and are likely to induce an apparent signal for scaling in the cross-over region which we propose explains the scaling observed for RP(2), RP(3) and SO(4)-matrix models. The signal for this `pseudo' scaling will occur for the RP(2) spin model in the cross-over region which is the region in which computer simulations are done. We find that the RP(2) spin model is in the same universality class as the O(3) spin model but that it is likely to require a very large correlation length before the true scaling of this class sets in. We conjecture that the scaling flows are due either to the influence of a nearby new renormalized trajectory or to the ghost of the Kosterlitz-Thouless trajectory in the associated XY model.Comment: 29 pages, LATEX2e, 10 figures, uses styles[epsfig,latexsym

    Thermodynamics of lattice QCD with two light quark flavours on a 16^3 x 8 lattice II

    We have extended our earlier simulations of the high temperature behaviour of lattice QCD with two light flavours of staggered quarks on a 163×816^3 \times 8 lattice to lower quark mass (m_q=0.00625). The transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma is observed at 6/g2=5.49(2)6/g^2=5.49(2) corresponding to a temperature of Tc140T_c \approx 140MeV. We present measurements of observables which probe the nature of the quark-gluon plasma and serve to distinguish it from hadronic matter.     Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Cooling in Lattice QCD

    Chiral symmetry breaking is calculated as a function of cooling in quenched lattice QCD. A non-zero signal is found for the chiral condensate beyond one hundred cooling steps, suggesting that there is chiral symmetry breaking associated with instantons.     On-line Excited-State Laser Spectroscopy of Trapped Short-Lived Ra+^+ Ions

    As an important step towards an atomic parity violation experiment in one single trapped Ra+^+ ion, laser spectroscopy experiments were performed with on-line produced short-lived 212,213,214^{212,213,214}Ra+^+ ions. The isotope shift of the 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2}\,-\,7\,^2P3/2_{3/2} transitions and the hyperfine structure constant of the 7\,^2S1/2_{1/2} and 6\,^2D3/2_{3/2} states in 213^{213}Ra+^+ were measured. These values provide a benchmark for the required atomic theory. A lower limit of 232(4)232(4) ms for the lifetime of the metastable 6\,^2D5/2_{5/2} state was measured by optical shelving.Comment: 4.2 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables
