Is dentistry the orphaned field of medicine? Ethical consideration for evidence-based dentistry

It was a watershed moment when Archie Cochrane published his work on Effectiveness and efficiency: random reflections on health services which was considered the start of evidence-based healthcare as we now know it. From there onward, evidence-based dentistry (EBD) has developed and evolved and there has been little attention to the interlink between EBD and ethics. The aim of this paper is to explore some of the ethical basis of evidence-based approach to healthcare utilising Beauchamp and Childress' four principles. EBD will be examined in relation to a variety of ethical theories. The case will be made that dentistry can, at times, be considered the orphaned field of medicine and an examination will be presented about how this may affect the uptake of EBD in practice. While exploring the strengths and weaknesses of EBD from an ethical viewpoint, we will highlight some of the challenges facing many dental practitioners in judging what is considered high-quality evidence and examine ways in which this could be improved with links to patient outcomes from an ethical perspective

Some aspects of reproductive biology of two sciaenids, Otolithes cuvieri Trewavas and Johnius elongatus Mohan: maturation, spawning, sex ratio and fecundity

The gonads of Otolithes cuvieri and Johnius elongatus are described in seven maturity stages. O. Cuvieri spawns once a year from April to September as evidence by ova diameter frequency distribution and GSI values. 50% maturity is attained at 210mm TL in males and 200mm TL in females. Fecundity ranged from 2387 to 104379 with a mean value of 33502. Log-Log relationship between fecundity and total lenght, body weight and ovary weight were determined. An overall sex ratio of 1.54:1.00 was unequal in favour of males. Johnius elongatus spawns twice a year from January-February to Aprile-May and from August to October as evidence by ova diameter frequency distribution and GSI values. 50% maturity is attained at 140-143mm TL in both sexes. Fecundity ranged from 4238 to 167669 with a mean value of 42818. Log-Log relationship between fecundity and total lenght, body weign and ovary weight were determined. An overall sex ratio of 1.00:1.20 was unequal in favour of females

Incorporating Betweenness Centrality in Compressive Sensing for Congestion Detection

This paper presents a new Compressive Sensing (CS) scheme for detecting network congested links. We focus on decreasing the required number of measurements to detect all congested links in the context of network tomography. We have expanded the LASSO objective function by adding a new term corresponding to the prior knowledge based on the relationship between the congested links and the corresponding link Betweenness Centrality (BC). The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by simulations on two real datasets. The results demonstrate that our model outperformed the state-of-the-art CS based method with significant improvements in terms of F-Score

A Reinforcement Learning Based Model for Adaptive ServiceQuality Management in E-Commerce Websites

Providing high-quality service to all users is adifficult and inefficient strategy for e-commerce providers,especially when Web servers experience overload condi-tions that cause increased response time and requestrejections, leading to user frustration and reduced revenue.In an e-commerce system, customer Web sessions havediffering values for service providers. These tend to: givepreference to customer Web sessions that are likely tobring more profit by providing better service quality. Thispaper proposes a reinforcement-learning based adaptivee-commerce system model that adapts the service qualitylevel for different Web sessions within the customer’snavigation in order to maximize total profit. The e-com-merce system is considered as an electronic supply chainwhich includes a network of basic e- providers used tosupply e-commerce services for end customers. The learneragent noted as e-commerce supply chain manager(ECSCM) agent allocates a service quality level to thecustomer’s request based on his/her navigation pattern inthe e-commerce Website and selects an optimized combi-nation of service providers to respond to the customer’srequest. To evaluate the proposed model, a multi agentframework composed of three agent types, the ECSCMagent, customer agent (buyer/browser) and service provideragent, is employed. Experimental results show that theproposed model improves total profits through costreduction and revenue enhancement simultaneously andencourages customers to purchase from the Websitethrough service quality adaptation
