    A STUDY OF PERCEPTIONS OF MATH MINDSET, MATH ANXIETY, AND VIEW OF MATH BY YOUNG ADULTS

    This study’s purpose was to determine whether instruction in growth math mindset led to change in perceptions of 18-22-year-old at-risk students in math mindset, math anxiety, and view of math. The experimental curriculum was created by the researcher with the guidance of experts in mathematics and education and focused on the impact of brain growth and learning supported by positive math mindset. Young adult public charter high school at-risk students were surveyed before and after completion of the experimental intervention to measure their perceptions in the domains of Math Mindset, Math Anxiety, and View of Math. The results revealed significant differences in the treatment group’s pre-to post-test perceptions in all three math domains (p \u3c .001) Comparison between the experimental and control groups were conducted, revealing significant differences between the two group in all three domains of math. These results point to the effectiveness of the experimental curriculum and instructional techniques to positively impact students’ perceptions of Math Mindset, reduction of Math Anxiety, and improvement in View of Math

    A two dimensional oscillating airfoil test apparatus is presented as a method of measuring unsteady aerodynamic forces on an airfoil or rotor blade section. The oscillating airfoil test rig, which is being built for use in an 11 X 11-foot transonic wind tunnel (speed range M = 0.4 - 1.4), will allow determination of unsteady loadings and detailed pressure distributions on representative airfoil sections undergoing simulated pitching and flapping motions. The design details of the motion generating system and supporting structure are presented. This apparatus is now in the construction phase

    Co-rich decagonal Al-Co-Ni: predicting structure, orientational order, and puckering

    We apply systematic methods previously used by Mihalkovic et al. to predict the structure of the `basic' Co-rich modification of the decagonal Al70 Co20 Ni10 layered quasicrystal, based on known lattice constants and previously calculated pair potentials. The modelling is based on Penrose tile decoration and uses Monte Carlo annealing to discover the dominant motifs, which are converted into rules for another level of description. The result is a network of edge-sharing large decagons on a binary tiling of edge 10.5 A. A detailed analysis is given of the instability of a four-layer structure towards cc-doubling and puckering of the atoms out of the layers, which is applied to explain the (pentagonal) orientational order.Comment: IOP LaTex; 7 pp, 2 figures.     Some model-independent phenomenological consequences of flexible brane worlds

    In this work we will review the main properties of brane-world models with low tension. Starting from very general principles, it is possible to obtain an effective action for the relevant degrees of freedom at low energies (branons). Using the cross sections for high-energy processes involving branons, we set bounds on the different parameters appearing in these models. We also show that branons provide a WIMP candidate for dark matter in a natural way. We consider cosmological constraints on its thermal and non-thermal relic abundances. We derive direct detection limits and compare those limits with the preferred parameter region in the case in which the EGRET excess in the diffuse galactic gamma rays is due to dark matter annihilation. Finally we will discuss the constraints coming from the precision tests of the Standard Model and the muon anomalous magnetic moment.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures.     Getting beta-alpha without penguins

    Oscillation effects in B0 -> Ks D0 and related processes are considered to determine delta=beta-alpha+pi. We suggest that D0 decays to CP eigenstates used in concert with inclusive D0 decays provide a powerful method for determining delta cleanly i.e. without any complication from penguin processes. The CP asymmetry is expected to be <=40% for D0 decays to non-CP eigenstates and <=80% for decays to CP eigenstates. This method can lead to a fairly accurate determination of delta with O(10^8-10^9) B-mesons.Comment: 4 pages 1 figure; Version 2: minor changes; references added; Some changes in response to Referee Comment

    A Submillimeter HCN Laser in IRC+10216

    We report the detection of a strong submillimeter wavelength HCN laser line at a frequency near 805 GHz toward the carbon star IRC+10216. This line, the J=9-8 rotational transition within the (04(0)0) vibrationally excited state, is one of a series of HCN laser lines that were first detected in the laboratory in the early days of laser spectroscopy. Since its lower energy level is 4200 K above the ground state, the laser emission must arise from the inner part of IRC+10216's circumstellar envelope. To better characterize this environment, we observed other, thermally emitting, vibrationally excited HCN lines and find that they, like the laser line, arise in a region of temperature approximately 1000 K that is located within the dust formation radius; this conclusion is supported by the linewidth of the laser. The (04(0)0), J=9-8 laser might be chemically pumped and may be the only known laser (or maser) that is excited both in the laboratory and in space by a similar mechanism.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
