Linear Size Optimal q-ary Constant-Weight Codes and Constant-Composition Codes
An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight has
linear size if and only if its distance is at least . When , the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or
constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of has been solved
previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight
codes, and for some sporadic instances.
This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal
constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight and distance
based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result,
the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight
codes of weight and distance are determined for all such codes of
sufficiently large lengths. This solves an open problem of Etzion.
The sizes of optimal constant-composition codes of weight and distance

Achieving High Breast Cancer Survival for Women in Rural and Remote Areas
Background: Significant improvements in breast cancer survival have been made in the past few decades in many developed countries including Australia with a five-year relative survival of 90%. The aim of the present study is to obtain a brief estimate of the relative importance of demographic factors such as rurality, socio-economic standard and ethnicity versus traditional risk factors for women diagnosed with breast cancer in Far North Queensland, Australia.
Methods: This was a retrospective longitudinal study of all women diagnosed with their first episode of breast cancer in 1999-2013 in Far North Queensland, Australia. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis was used to identify factors independently associated with mortality for women with any type of breast cancer (in situ or invasive) and for women with invasive cancer. Life tables were used to assess five and ten-year absolute survival. Standard linear regression and binary logistic regression were used to identify any association between demographic factors and late presentation.
Results: Five and ten-year absolute survival was 0.90 and 0.86 respectively. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status, remoteness of area of residence, and socioeconomic status were not associated with more advanced disease at presentation or increased risk of breast cancer death. Only traditional risk factors such as increased tumour size, absence of progesterone receptor, high tumour grade and presence of metastasis in axillary lymph nodes were associated with increased risk of breast cancer death.
Conclusion: The effect of the classical risk factors on breast cancer mortality outweighs the effects of demographic factors. The fact that ethnicity, remoteness and socioeconomic status is not associated with late presentation or breast cancer death suggests that given appropriate resources it may be possible to close the gap of inequalities in breast cancer

Macrophage VLDL Receptor Promotes PAFAH Secretion in Mother’s Milk and Suppresses Systemic Inflammation in Nursing Neonates
Mother’s milk is widely accepted as nutritious and protective to the newborn mammals by providing not only macronutrients but also immune-defensive factors. However, the mechanisms accounting for these benefits are not fully understood. Here we show that maternal very-low-density-lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR) deletion in mice causes the production of defective milk containing diminished level of platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAFAH). As a consequence, the nursing neonates suffer from alopecia, anemia and growth retardation owing to elevated levels of pro-inflammatory platelet-activating factors (PAFs). VLDLR deletion significantly impairs the expression of phospholipase A2 group 7 (Pla2g7) in macrophages, which decreases PAFAH secretion. Exogenous oral supplementation of neonates with PAFAH effectively rescues the toxicity. These findings not only reveal a novel role of VLDLR in suppressing inflammation by maintaining macrophage PAFAH secretion, but also identify the maternal VLDLR as a key genetic program that ensures milk quality and protects the newborns.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog
Role of spatial anisotropy in design storm generation: Experiment and interpretation
Rainfall accumulation depths over a given area are strongly dependent on the shape of the storm together with its direction of advection. A method to produce design storms exhibiting anisotropic spatial scaling is presented by combining a state-of-the-art stochastic rainfall generator STEPS with the linear generalized scale invariance (GSI) notation. The enhanced model is used to create ensembles of design storms based on an extreme storm with a distinct rainband shape observed in Melbourne, Australia. Design storms are generated both with and without accounting for anisotropy. Effect of anisotropy on precipitation characteristics is studied using the entire region covered by the radar (radar scale) and at a significantly smaller catchment scale. A rainfall-runoff model is applied to route the rainfall through the catchment into streamflow. Accounting for anisotropy allows for a more realistic description of precipitation features at the radar scale. At the catchment scale, anisotropy increases the probability of high rainfall accumulations, which translates into greater flood volumes. No discernible difference was observed in streamflow characteristics after controlling for the accumulation over the catchment. This could be explained by a lower importance of anisotropy relative to other factors affecting streamflow generation, and by the difficulties in creating representative rainfall temporal properties at the catchment scale when the radar scale is used for model calibration. The proposed method provides a tool to create ensembles of design storms when the anisotropic shape of the fields is of importance.Peer reviewe
Cell-free massive MIMO networks: Optimal power control against active eavesdropping
This paper studies the security aspect of a recently introduced network
("cell-free massive MIMO") under a pilot spoofing attack. Firstly, a simple
method to recognize the presence of this type of an active eavesdropping attack
to a particular user is shown. In order to deal with this attack, we consider
the problem of maximizing the achievable data rate of the attacked user or its
achievable secrecy rate. The corresponding problems of minimizing the
consumption power subject to security constraints are also considered in
parallel. Path-following algorithms are developed to solve the posed
optimization problems under different power allocation to access points (APs).
Under equip-power allocation to APs, these optimization problems admit

Upper Limits on a Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory has performed a third science run with much improved sensitivities of all three interferometers. We present an analysis of approximately 200 hours of data acquired during this run, used to search for a stochastic background of gravitational radiation. We place upper bounds on the energy density stored as gravitational radiation for three different spectral power laws. For the flat spectrum, our limit of Ω_0<8.4×10^(-4) in the 69–156 Hz band is ~10^5 times lower than the previous result in this frequency range
