Model reconstructions for the Si(337) orientation
Although unstable, the Si(337) orientation has been known to appear in
diverse experimental situations such as the nanoscale faceting of Si(112), or
in the case of miscutting a Si(113) surface. Various models for Si(337) have
been proposed over time, which motivates a comprehensive study of the structure
of this orientation. Such a study is undertaken in this article, where we
report the results of a genetic algorithm optimization of the Si(337)- surface. The algorithm is coupled with a highly optimized empirical
potential for silicon, which is used as an efficient way to build a set of
possible Si(337) models; these structures are subsequently relaxed at the level
of ab initio density functional methods. Using this procedure, we retrieve most
of the (337) reconstructions proposed in previous works, as well as a number of
novel ones.Comment: 5 figures (low res.); to appear in J. Appl. Phy
Rapidly Rotating Fermi Gases
We show that the density profile of a Fermi gas in rapidly rotating potential
will develop prominent features reflecting the underlying Landau level like
energy spectrum. Depending on the aspect ratio of the trap, these features can
be a sequence of ellipsoidal volumes or a sequence of quantized steps.Comment: 4 pages, 1 postscript fil
Modeling Phase-resolved Observations of the Surfaces of Magnetic Neutron Stars
Recent observations by XMM-Newton detected rotational pulsations in the total
brightness and spectrum of several neutron stars. To properly interpret the
data, accurate modeling of neutron star emission is necessary. Detailed
analysis of the shape and strength of the rotational variations allows a
measurement of the surface composition and magnetic field, as well as
constrains the nuclear equation of state. We discuss our models of the spectra
and light curves of two of the most observed neutron stars, RX J1856.5-3754 and
1E 1207.4-5209, and discuss some implications of our results and the direction
of future work.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures; Proceedings of "40 Years of Pulsars", eds. C.

Dissecting the Power Sources of Low-Luminosity Emission-Line Galaxy Nuclei via Comparison of HST-STIS and Ground-Based Spectra
Using a sample of ~100 nearby line-emitting galaxy nuclei, we have built the
currently definitive atlas of spectroscopic measurements of H_alpha and
neighboring emission lines at subarcsecond scales. We employ these data in a
quantitative comparison of the nebular emission in Hubble Space Telescope (HST)
and ground-based apertures, which offer an order-of-magnitude difference in
contrast, and provide new statistical constraints on the degree to which
Transition Objects and low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions (LINERs)
are powered by an accreting black hole at <10 pc. We show that while the
small-aperture observations clearly resolve the nebular emission, the aperture
dependence in the line ratios is generally weak, and this can be explained by
gradients in the density of the line-emitting gas: the higher densities in the
more nuclear regions potentially flatten the excitation gradients, suppressing
the forbidden emission. The Transition Objects show a threefold increase in the
incidence of broad H_alpha emission in the high-resolution data, as well as the
strongest density gradients, supporting the composite model for these systems
as accreting sources surrounded by star-forming activity. The narrow-line
LINERs appear to be the weaker counterparts of the Type 1 LINERs, where the low
accretion rates cause the disappearance of the broad-line component. The
enhanced sensitivity of the HST observations reveals a 30% increase in the
incidence of accretion-powered systems at z~0. A comparison of the strength of
the broad-line emission detected at different epochs implies potential
broad-line variability on a decade-long timescale, with at least a factor of
three in amplitude.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Ap
Noncommutative D-Brane in Non-Constant NS-NS B Field Background
We show that when the field strength H of the NS-NS B field does not vanish,
the coordinates X and momenta P of an open string endpoints satisfy a set of
mixed commutation relations among themselves. Identifying X and P with the
coordinates and derivatives of the D-brane world volume, we find a new type of
noncommutative spaces which is very different from those associated with a
constant B field background.Comment: 11 pages, Latex, minor modification
