Far-Ultraviolet Cooling Features of the Antlia Supernova Remnant

We present far-ultraviolet observations of the Antlia supernova remnant obtained with Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS, also called SPEAR). The strongest lines observed are C IV 1548,1551 and C III 977. The C IV emission of this mixed-morphology supernova remnant shows a clumpy distribution, and the line intensity is nearly constant with radius. The C III 977 line, though too weak to be mapped over the whole remnant, is shown to vary radially. The line intensity peaks at about half the radius, and drops at the edge of the remnant. Both the clumpy distribution of C IV and the rise in the C IV to C III ratio towards the edge suggest that central emission is from evaporating cloudlets rather than thermal conduction in a more uniform, dense medium.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, will be published in ApJ December 1, 2007, v670n2 issue. see http://astro.snu.ac.kr/~jhshinn/ms.pd

AbstractObjectiveTo better understand Aeromonas-involved polymicrobial bacteremia (AIPMB).Materials and MethodsWe conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with AIPMB admitted to three large referral hospitals in Taiwan between 2001 and 2008.ResultsOf a total of 62 patients with AIPMB, 22 had healthcare-associated infection and 40 had community-acquired infection. Enterobacteriaceae was the most common concurrent pathogen (82%). The leading underlying diseases/conditions in the affected patients were solid cancers (45%), recent gastric acid suppressant therapy (39%) and liver cirrhosis (26%). More than 95% of the Aeromonas isolates were susceptible to an aminoglycoside, a third- or fourth-generation cephalosporin, imipenem or ciprofloxacin. Antibiotic susceptibilities did not significantly differ between Aeromonas isolates in patients with healthcare-associated AIPMBs and those in patients with community-acquired AIPMBs. Coinfection with Enterobacteriaceae occurred more commonly in community-acquired AIPMB (93% vs. 64%; p=0.012).ConclusionsAIPMB occurred commonly in patients with liver cirrhosis, solid cancers or recent gastric acid suppressant therapy. Enterobacteriaceae were the most common concurrent pathogens. Similar antibiotic profiles were found in Aeromonas isolates of healthcare-associated and community-acquired AIPMBs

Additive interaction of mid- to late-life depression and cerebrovascular disease on the risk of dementia: a nationwide population-based cohort study

Background Dementia is a progressive neurocognitive disease with a substantial social burden. No apparent breakthroughs in treatment options have emerged so far; thus, disease prevention is essential for at-risk populations. Depression and cerebrovascular disease (CVD) are independent risk factors for dementia, but no studies have examined their interaction effect on dementia risk. This study aimed to identify the association of depression and CVD with the risk of dementia and evaluate whether dementia risk among patients with comorbid depression and CVD is higher than the sum of the individual risk due to each condition. Methods A population-based cohort study was conducted to analyze the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort data of all individuals over 50 years of age. Individuals who had not been diagnosed with dementia at baseline were included and followed up from January 1, 2005, to December 31, 2013. A time-varying Cox proportional hazard regression model adjusted for potential confounding factors was used for the analysis. The interaction between depression and CVD was estimated based on the attributable proportion (AP), relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI), synergy index (SI), and multiplicative-scale interaction. Results A total of 242,237 participants were included in the analytical sample, of which 12,735 (5.3%) developed dementia. Compared to that for participants without depression or CVD, the adjusted hazard ratio for the incidence of dementia for those with depression alone was 2.35 (95% confidence interval [CI] 2.21–2.49), CVD alone was 3.25 (95% CI 3.11–3.39), and comorbid depression and CVD was 5.02 (95% CI 4.66–5.42). The additive interaction between depression and CVD was statistically significant (AP—0.08, 95% CI 0.01–0.16; RERI—0.42, 95% CI 0.03–0.82; SI—1.12, 95% CI 1.01–1.24). The multiplicative interaction was significant too, but the effect was negative (0.66, 95% CI 0.60–0.73). Conclusions In this population-based nationwide cohort with long-term follow-up, depression and CVD were associated with an increased risk of dementia, and their coexistence additively increased dementia risk more than the sum of the individual risks. This study was supported by grants from Sungkyunkwan University (Sungkyun Research Fund 2017), Eisai Inc. and the National Research Foundation (NRF) funded by the Korean government (MSIT, 2020R1A2C2101276 to DKK), Republic of Korea

Abstract

Background

Qigong, similar to Tai Chi Chuan, is beneficial to health. In Taiwan, Waitankung, a type of Qigong, is as popular as Tai Chi Chuan. This population-based comparison study compares the health-related quality of life between people practicing Waitankung and their comparable community residents.

Methods

A total of 165 individuals practicing Waitankung were matched by age and sex with 660 general individuals for comparison. Information about health-related quality of life, measured by the SF-36, and other basic and health conditions was obtained from the questionnaires. This study used the linear mixed-effect regression model to examine the association between health-related quality of life and the practice of Waitankung.

Results

Compared with either sedentary individuals or individuals practicing other types of exercise, the Waitankung group scored higher for eight and five out of ten SF-36 components, respectively. The Waitankung group scored better in general health, vitality, and physical component summary compared to individuals participating in other types of exercise, even when considering the energy expended by exercise.

Conclusion

The results suggest that Waitankung exercising is significantly associated with health-related quality of life. Waitankung may serve as an exercise choice for middle-aged and older people to improve overall quality of life.</p

Abstract

Background

Home healthcare services are important in aging societies worldwide. The present nationwide study of health insurance data examined the utilization and delivery patterns, including diagnostic indications, for home healthcare services used by seniors in Taiwan.

Methods

Patients ≥65 years of age who received home healthcare services during 2004 under the Taiwanese National Health Insurance Program were identified and reimbursement claims were analyzed. Age, gender, disease diagnoses, distribution of facilities providing home healthcare services, and patterns of professional visits, including physician and skilled nursing visits, were also explored.

Results

Among 2,104,978 beneficiaries ≥65 years of age, 19,483 (0.9%) patients received 127,753 home healthcare visits during 2004 with a mean number of 6.0 ± 4.8 visits per person. The highest prevalence of home healthcare services was in the 75-84 year age group in both sexes. Females received more home healthcare services than males in all age groups. Cerebrovascular disease was the most frequent diagnosis in these patients (50.7%). More than half of home healthcare visits and around half of the professional home visits were provided by community home nursing care institutions. The majority of the home skilled nursing services were tube replacements, including nasogastric tubes, Foley catheter, tracheostomy, nephrostomy or cystostomy tubes (95%).

Conclusions

Nine out of 1,000 older patients in Taiwan received home healthcare services during 2004, which was much lower than the rate of disabled older people in Taiwan. Females used home healthcare services more frequently than males and the majority of skilled nursing services were tube replacements. The rate of tube replacement of home healthcare patients in Taiwan deserves to be paid more attention.</p
