    Neural self-tuning adaptive control of non-minimum phase system

    The motivation of this research came about when a neural network direct adaptive control scheme was applied to control the tip position of a flexible robotic arm. Satisfactory control performance was not attainable due to the inherent non-minimum phase characteristics of the flexible robotic arm tip. Most of the existing neural network control algorithms are based on the direct method and exhibit very high sensitivity, if not unstable, closed-loop behavior. Therefore, a neural self-tuning control (NSTC) algorithm is developed and applied to this problem and showed promising results.     Features of trastuzumab-related cardiac dysfunction: deformation analysis outside left ventricular global longitudinal strain

    BackgroundCancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction due to trastuzumab has been well-known for many years, and echocardiographic surveillance is recommended every 3 months in patients undergoing trastuzumab treatment, irrespective of the baseline cardiotoxicity risk. However, the potential harm and cost of overscreening in low- and moderate-risk patients have become great concerns.ObjectivesThis study aimed to identify the incidence of early cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) and the behaviours of left and right heart deformations during trastuzumab chemotherapy in low- and moderate-risk patients.MethodsWe prospectively enrolled 110 anthracycline-naïve women with breast cancer and cardiovascular risk factors who were scheduled to receive trastuzumab. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV-GLS), and right ventricular and left atrial longitudinal strains were evaluated using echocardiography at baseline, before every subsequent cycle and 3 weeks after the final dose of trastuzumab. The baseline risk of CTRCD was graded according to the risk score proposed by the Heart Failure Association (HFA) Cardio-Oncology Working Group and the International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS). CTRCD and its severity were defined according to the current European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines.ResultsTwelve (10.9%) patients had asymptomatic CTRCD. All CTRCD occurred sporadically during the first 9 months of the active trastuzumab regimen in both low- and moderate-risk patients. While CTRCD was graded as moderate severity in 41.7% of patients and heart failure therapy was initiated promptly, no irreversible cardiotoxicity or trastuzumab interruption was recorded at the end of follow-up. Among the left and right heart deformation indices, only LV-GLS decreased significantly in the CTRCD group during the trastuzumab regimen.ConclusionsCTRCD is prevalent in patients with non-high-risk breast cancer undergoing trastuzumab chemotherapy. Low- and moderate-risk patients show distinct responses to trastuzumab. The LV-GLS is the only deformation index sensitive to early trastuzumab-related cardiac dysfunction

    Role of spinon and spinon singlet pair excitations on phase transitions in d−waved-wave superconductors

    We examine the roles of massless Dirac spinon and spin singlet pair excitations on the phase transition in d−waved-wave superconductors. Although the massless spinon excitations in the presence of the spin singlet pair excitations do not alter the nature of the phase transition at T=0T = 0, that is, the XY universality class, they are seen to induce an additional attractive interaction potential between vortices, further stabilizing vortex-antivortex pairs at low temperature for lightly doped high TcT_c samples.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur

    Suspension culture combined with chemotherapeutic agents for sorting of breast cancer stem cells

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cancer stem cell (CSC) hypothesis has not been well demonstrated by the lack of the most convincing evidence concerning a single cell capable of giving rise to a tumor. The scarcity in quantity and improper approaches for isolation and purification of CSCs have become the major obstacles for great development in CSCs. Here we adopted suspension culture combined with anticancer regimens as a strategy for screening breast cancer stem cells (BrCSCs). BrCSCs could survive and be highly enriched in non-adherent suspension culture while chemotherapeutic agents could destroy most rapidly dividing cancer cells and spare relatively quiescent BrCSCs.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>TM40D murine breast cancer cells were cultured in serum-free medium. The expression of CD44<sup>+</sup>CD24<sup>- </sup>was measured by flow cytometry. Cells of passage 10 were treated in combination with anticancer agents pacilitaxel and epirubicin at different peak plasma concentrations for 24 hours, and then maintained under suspension culture. The rate of apoptosis was examined by flow cytometry with Annexin-V fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)/propidium iodide (PI) double staining method. Selected cells in different amounts were injected subcutaneously into BALB/C mice to observe tumor formation.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Cells of passage 10 in suspension culture had the highest percentage of CD44<sup>+</sup>CD24<sup>- </sup>(about 77 percent). A single tumor cell in 0.35 PPC could generate tumors in 3 of 20 BALB/C mice.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Suspension culture combined with anticancer regimens provides an effective means of isolating, culturing and purifying BrCSCs.</p

    Reproductive performance in sows in relation to Japanese Encephalitis Virus seropositivity in an endemic area

    Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is considered an important reproductive pathogen in pigs. Most studies of the reproductive impact of JEV have been conducted in areas where the disease occurs in seasonal epidemics. In this study, the associations between seropositivity for JEV, measured with an IgG ELISA, and the number of piglets born alive and stillborn were investigated in a tropical area endemic for JEV in Vietnam. Sixty percent of sows from four farms in the Mekong delta of Vietnam were seropositive to JEV and the Odds Ratio for a sow being infected was highest (6.4) in sows above 3.5 years (95% confidence interval 2.2–18.3). There was an association between increasing Optical Density (OD) values from the ELISA and the number of stillborn piglets in sows less than 1.5 years, but no effect of seropositivity could be shown when all sows were studied. OD values had an effect (p = 0.04) on the number of piglets born alive in the statistical analysis only when interacting with the effect of the breeds. An increase in mean OD value of the herd was correlated (p < 0.0001) with an increase in the number of piglets born alive. In this study, there was evidence of a negative association between seropositivity for JEV and the reproductive performance only in sows less than 1.5 years in endemic areas. This could be explained by a year-round infection with the virus, which would lead to immunity in many gilts before their first pregnancy. This, in turn, may imply that JEV infection in pigs is of minor importance for the reproductive performance in endemic areas

    Helicobacter pylori infection and gastroduodenal diseases in Vietnam: a cross-sectional, hospital-based study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The rate of <it>H. pylori </it>infection in Vietnam is reportedly high, but the spectrum of <it>H. pylori</it>-associated gastroduodenal diseases has not been systematically investigated. Moreover, despite the similarities of ethnicity and diet, the age-standardized incidence rate of gastric cancer in the northern city of Hanoi is higher than that in the southern city of Ho Chi Minh, but the reason for this phenomenon is unknown. The virulence of Vietnamese <it>H. pylori </it>has also not been investigated in detail.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Individuals undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy were randomly recruited. <it>H. pylori </it>infection status was determined based on the combined results of culture, histology, immunohistochemistry, rapid urine test and serum ELISA. Peptic ulcer (PU) and gastroesophageal reflux disease was diagnosed by endoscopy, and chronic gastritis was determined histologically. <it>H. pylori </it>virulence factors were investigated by PCR and sequencing.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among the examined patients, 65.6% were infected with <it>H. pylori</it>. The prevalence of infection was significantly higher in those over 40 years of age than in those aged ≤40. Chronic gastritis was present in all <it>H. pylori</it>-infected individuals, 83.1% of whom had active gastritis, and 85.3% and 14.7% had atrophy and intestinal metaplasia, respectively. PU was present in 21% of infected patients, whereas its incidence was very low in non-infected individuals. The prevalence of PU was significantly higher in Hanoi than in Ho Chi Minh. The prevalence of <it>vacA m1</it>, which has been identified as an independent risk factor for PU in Vietnam, was significantly higher among <it>H. pylori </it>isolates from Hanoi than among those from Ho Chi Minh.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p><it>H. pylori </it>infection is common in Vietnam and is strongly associated with PU, active gastritis, atrophy and intestinal metaplasia. <it>vacA m1 </it>is associated with an increased risk for PU and might contribute to the difference in the prevalence of PU and gastric cancer between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.</p
