    My thesis is that, in his drama Boris Godunov, Pushkin did not work solely on the Time of Troubles, but having chosen events that happened around 1600 he opened up the older issues that shaped them. Namely this concerns the polarization that occurred after the Council of Florence (1439). Although this council confirmed cultural plurality and recognized both Latin and Byzantine ritual practices and wordings of the Creed as valid, it was rejected during the reign of Muscovite Grand Duke Basil II, the Blind.&nbsp

    The Journey to Florence and A Note about Rome are both part of the Florentine Cyrillic corpus: the first travelogue describes the journey of a Russian delegation to Florence and back, the second one documents the pilgrimage of the Russians to the graves of the apostles in Rome. The motivations behind both journeys were different: while the one to Florence was an official journey in the services of Metropolitan Isidore, the journey to Rome was undertaken as a personal initiative. The 15th century text of A Note about Rome presents the oldest description of Rome in Cyrillic writing and it remained the only information about Rome for a Russian reader for the following 250 years. In this study, it is analysed in comparison with The Journey to Florence that provides the arguments for the Note’s dating – revealing that the Russian pilgrims visited Rome in 1438, between August 18th and October 8th. Besides the sacredness, the Russian pilgrims perceived the withered state of the Eternal City. It is not completely out of the question that the image of an old Rome was later connected with the image of fallen Constantinople – and it co-formed the perspective of a young Christian nation with the ambition of succession. The visit of Church of Saint Alexius, “Man of God” by the Russian pilgrims shows that the Roman saint was still an archetypal image of Byzantine-Slavic religiosity. Thus, he also stands as an example of communio sanctorum, which was the main connector of the Byzantine and Latin world at the Council of Florence

    On first sight, it would seem that Victor Hugo and Varlam Shalamov represent completely opposite worlds. From a formal standpoint, it is truly so: Hugo’s epopeia versus the short prosaic thriftiness of Shalamov. What connects both of these poets then? Hugo in the meeting of the bishop with the member of the Convention, G. explores the eventual convergence of opposing political positions. On a personal level, he uncovers the honest effort of both characters. Shalamov in Kolyma Tales recounts the experience of Russian intelligentsia after the October revolution which had a tragic impact, even on his personal life. As the son of an Orthodox priest, he understands the structure of Christianism, but looks at it from the position of a devout follower of humanistic ideals, who spent 20 years in the Soviet labour camps. Both authors protest against the physical destruction of the differently thinking parts of the nation (Vendée, Kolyma) and initiate thinking about faith and honest unfaith

    Based on the author’s assistantship experience with Théâtre du Soleil during the rehearsal process of Les Atrides in 1990, this study offers an insight into the aesthetics and working strategy of the French theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine. The study focuses on the relationship of the Théâtre du Soleil to the oriental theatre sources, seeking to prove that it cannot be reduced to quotations of oriental elements in Mnouchkine’s works. In fact, the lessons from the various oriental forms are integrated into her artistic thought to the point that is no more possible to isolate the “oriental details” as they participate with all the rest on the creation of the exact stage metaphor

    Universal Dependencies 2.0 – CoNLL 2017 Shared Task Development and Test Data

    Universal Dependencies is a project that seeks to develop cross-linguistically consistent treebank annotation for many languages, with the goal of facilitating multilingual parser development, cross-lingual learning, and parsing research from a language typology perspective. The annotation scheme is based on (universal) Stanford dependencies (de Marneffe et al., 2006, 2008, 2014), Google universal part-of-speech tags (Petrov et al., 2012), and the Interset interlingua for morphosyntactic tagsets (Zeman, 2008). This release contains the test data used in the CoNLL 2017 shared task on parsing Universal Dependencies. Due to the shared task the test data was held hidden and not released together with the training and development data of UD 2.0. Therefore this release complements the UD 2.0 release (http://hdl.handle.net/11234/1-1983) to a full release of UD treebanks. In addition, the present release contains 18 new parallel test sets and 4 test sets in surprise languages. The present release also includes the development data already released with UD 2.0. Unlike regular UD releases, this one uses the folder-file structure that was visible to the systems participating in the shared task
